Hatsune Miku’s live performances may not long be limited to the stage – one particularly dedicated fan has succeeded in getting her to perform in his living room, and provided a video of the spectacle
The video:
The setup is described tersely as “set up in my living room at my house where a large scrim mesh is suspended across a metal pipe” – as with the full scale performances, a projection system is in use.
Miku herself is a recording of one of her live Sega performances.
For now the system is likely to remain horrendously expensive/troublesome to set up, though some rather obvious new business and “live” performance models seem sure to become popular should Miku fans ever succeed in setting up the systems en masse.

holograms are already possible. i seen one in a houston museum as a kid. it was a baseball just floating in the air. you could reach out and grab at it, but your hand would just go through it. the only catch is there has to be a real object for the light to bounce off of. it's viewable from almost all angles. it has color and shape perfectly. this was nearly 15 years ago.

The baseball thing you said, isn't that considered more of a optical illusion? The one with two bowl shaped mirrors...
the baseball one wasn't done with the bowls, but it was similar. basically it was mounted in a steel case in the wall about 7 feet high. there was a vent like opening that faced downward and the ball floated in mid-air about 4 feet off the ground. from almost all angles it was visible. you could look into the vent and see bright lights and reflective surfaces, but i couldn't see the actual baseball. unlike the bowls one, you could swipe at it and your hand would pass through it. it wouldn't look like you were just going beside it like with the bowls one. but, yeah, i suppose it isn't a hologram in the sense that it could be an interactive digital program, but it was freestanding like in star wars.
TheBeast, you're talking about a cheap optical illusion, not a real hologram. It's not viewable from the top at all. = \

Hate to break it to you but everything here is prerendered from a particular viewing angle. Due to the nature of the projection system, you would need to reconfigure the cameras and rerender it in order to do that.
Give us the 3-D hologram. You know, "Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're our only hope."

I want the holodeck.
That won't be in our lifetimes. The holodeck on star trek uses particle accelerator technology to produce photons of light that decay at the exact position and frequency to produce light/color for the force field models that you can touch/interact with. It's basically a series of incredibly accurate shield emitters that make a person out of kinetic shield energy and then said photons are on them like a "shroud" that makes them appear real.
basically the holodeck is stupidly advanced. It's much more likely something like hotsim VR from shadow run would happen. Where you plug something into your brain and it makes you think you're experiencing it.
if you want to follow technology go to http://www.ted.com and listen to the presentations, you have for just about anything, there is a lot of news about implants to fake retinas for blinds and by extantion vr or augmented reality. They are decoding our senses code and by doing that highjack the senses with light implants. The matrix is at hand, more than probably a possibility in 20 years or so, maybe sooner if we put energy in it.

I work with anime-related events, so I know some people who would die to put their hands on that technology.
It isn't that complicated. You need a fairly wide angle projector if you expect to do it in a small space (he said that's how he's doing it.) Aside from that, the screen he's using is just a mosquito net type thing which is cheap and easy to set up.
There are videos of youtube of people (was it the same guy? I can't remember) comparing the mosquito net to the expensive displays like what were used at Miku concerts, and in some ways the mosquito net is actually a better screen, but it lets a little more light through to the wall behind you. Or in his case, through to the floor - because his projector was somewhat above the centre.
Then you just need the content to project, which is what will take the time to make.
mass produce and sell it!
i bet this kind of equipment could cost some fortunes!

With the Japanese developing touchable holograms, I guess we could soon have a tangible Miku. Would be interesting to see that.
Here's an idea!
Shrink this down to 1/8 scale. mini projector plugs into your computer via USB. Projects onto 1/8 screen with a 1/8 Miku. Then develop a program that makes her interactive. Speak into a mic like a question and she answers it there in front of you. Also comes with dancing programs where she dances and sings to her songs.
develop this and have it all as a bundle to sell at around $300 - $400 and you'll be fucking rich.
And of course, a full sized version for those who are richer XD AWESOME!!!

That looks pretty stable. Do they sell the raw video that they originally projected or something? I'd think if you projected a video of the projection you'd have a 2nd gen Miku dub, and it'd lose a lot of detail, you'd project the stage and audience, etc.
Also, this is not hard to do - it's an old stage technique; you could do something like it with 1800s tech. You could probably get up to some pretty impressive stuff playing with MMD and a black background.
You can easy make one yourself using MMD if you don't have a vid... The vid is from the blueray of her concerts.
