A man has been arrested for killing his girlfriend and putting another girl into a coma after their kinbaku shibari threesome went tragically wrong.
The incident began one night in Rome, where a 42-year-old engineer, his 24-year-old girlfriend and another 23-year-old girl met up for a night of sadomasochistic entertainment.
The trio had spent the night drinking and smoking hashish at a local club, and decided to retire to the basement garage of a building known to one of the girls for a BDSM session .
In the garage, the man proceeded to tie the two (still clothed) women together using Japanese style “shibari” (also known as “kinbaku”) ties, and then tied himself to them.

The man eventually cut her loose (authorities have noted he did not have a knife immediately to hand) and called for help, but she was by this time dead. The other woman was hospitalised and remains in a coma.
Police investigating the matter initially moved to charge the man with murder, but after being satisfied that the encounter was wholly consensual instead opted to charge him with involuntary manslaughter. He has been ordered to remain under house arrest.
Initial reports suggested the man was an experienced BDSM practitioner acquainted with the necessary safety measures for performing such acts – although whatever knowledge he did possess apparently did not extend to refraining from engaging in the practice whilst all three participants were drunk.
However, he later recanted and claimed he “was not an expert” and that this was the first time he had ever tied a subject’s neck.
He has expressed his profound regret at the woman’s death, and accepted he made a grave error in not being prepared to cut the girls down immediately.
There are also conflicting reports as to whether intentional suspension or breath play was involved – both practices would certainly place what transpired in the garage at the extreme end of the BDSM riskiness spectrum.
