Although in some circles the notion of “family friendly” late night anime might be considered a contradiction in terms, anime fans nonetheless optimistically supply a ranking of the late night anime they would most like to try watching with family.
1. Tiger & Bunny
2. Nichijou
3. Usagi Drop
4. Ano Hi Mita Hana
5. Working!!
6. Nurarihyon no Mago
7. Natsume’s Book of Friends
8. Nekogami Yaoyorozu
9. Ika Musume
10. K-ON!
Seikon no Qwaser came 25th…
also my mum is a teacher so if she knew what i have been watching i would be screwed, good thing she has only walked in on me watching clannad when i couldn’t turn my monitor off in time
if only it felt right to watch anime such as strike witches with my family, heck then i would be able to buy the dvd when it comes out
I watched the pollinic girls attack with my family once, they were shocked because I was actually masturbating and I didn’t know they were in the room. Go figure
I was watching Princess Mononoke with my brother when my parents became interested and started watching an hour in. Ghibli FTW
K-ON will just get your dad to smack you for being such a pussy if you’re a guy. And you’re mother will smack you for being w.e if you’re a girl.
I do watch some with my family
Magical Pokaan or Magipoka
My mother likes Death Note for some reason I dont know…
I watched Fullmetal Alchemist with my dad, and that was how I got to spend time with him when he wasn’t working most of the time.
Tried to get him to watch Natsume Yuujinchou with me as well, but while I was bawling my eyes out during some parts, he fell asleep instead. Aha ha…
wut about full metal Alchemist I always watched it with my family!!
I give up on parents long ago.
I’m watching Baccano with my mom. The only thing I’ve gotten to watch before was Summer Wars, which she cried during.
Why isn’t there any world theatre master piece anime in this list? It surely doesn’t mention to have to be a new anime… not to mention ghiblie movies.
Who in their right mind would try watch K-ON with their family? I’ve tried experimenting this in the past with my cousin and he didn’t feel comfortable watching it.
I remember when Higurashi came out my mother took a liking to it after passing by the TV when I was watching it. Ever since then she loves the guro type animes. Very odd I know. But more blood and more mind F(*&K and she is hooked 🙂
Boku no pico not on list – confirmed for shit
I’d been watching Puella on my flat screen through my laptop. My folks noticed and thought it was an unusually girly and PG show for me. That is, until the 3rd episode and so on, lol.
Ika Musume being ANYWHERE on this list makes it golden, though I’d sooner watch it with family than Nichijou.
Fortunately Nichijou doesn’t rely too much on humor only Japanese people would get.
Of course its all new anime again. There’s a lot of good old stuff too that I’d try showing family.
Son! I’m sorry to tell you this but you will be a virgin for quite a long time.
Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children I tried to get my parents to see when I was borrowing it. Its actually something well fitted to the american public.
Once Cowboy Bebop: The Movie was on TV in Hindi and my sister and father watched it with me.
That’s the only time anime and family ever connected for me.
My mother wouldn’t understand Nichijou at all…
BTW, it’s surprising not to see Hanasaku Iroha on this list.
I think Slayers is pretty family friendly. It certainly has a wide appeal if nothing else.
“Watching anime with family”
Why would I wanna do that? I have my own appartment, my own incomes and my own life, even if my parents would like those anime I don’t see a poing in watching it with them
Kaiji worked great for my family. It wasn’t in a fantasy setting (my parents find fantasy too childish unless it’s live action), there’s always important stuff happening and it’s not that hard to follow (unlike ghost in the shell, where you have to focus to know what’s going on).
no Madoka either? Damn…well, at least (fuc)k-on ain’t number 1 on this list.
(Am surprised to see Nura there though…)
K-yawn. The best cure for insomnia.
Finally an ok list.
Ano hana, i doubt it….is a little sad like clannad
K-ON! is not on the top, that’s news right there.
I watched Kodomo no Jikan with my mom.
My four children and I watch anime together all the time. Right now we’re working through Shakugan no Shana and then we’ll be hitting the Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi. What else we’ve watched all together as a family:
every Miyazaki/Ghibli film (over and over! my wife will actually sit and watch these, too)
Haruhi seasons 1 and 2
Samurai7
Last Exile
Scrapped Princess
Cowboy Bebop
Tower of Druaga 1 and 2
Negima! and Negima!? (or however the second one does it)
Fate/Stay Night
Black Cat
Full Metal Panic! (season 1 only)
Samurai Champloo (only with the older 2 kids)
Summer Wars
Steamboy
Metropolis
Origin
Vexille
Of the new stuff, I really want to show them Gosick and Tiger & Bunny, but we’ve got some older titles to work our way through first.
My kids are 14, 12, 9, and 6. Obviously the younger two don’t “get” as much, but they still love their anime, all the same!
I watched Ghost in Shell stand alone complex with my mother. That was about it though.
My nuclear family doesn’t watch anime, but a couple of my cousins do. I’ve recommended Working to them and they really seem to like it. of course, that’s not exactly the same as this question, but I have watched FLCL with my sister before (with about the reaction you’d expect from the average non-anime person when they see FLCL).
My mum caught up with Bleach, and she loves Wolf’s rain. I keep trying to get her to watch some of my favourite animes, but she always says she’ll “get round to them” D:
No! Dont EVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA watch anime with somebody~THE END~
I showed all of Ranma 1/2 Season 1 to my exgirlfriend’s entire family and had no problem (well, the boob parts were always awkward)
what’s with all this lists? do you go through 2ch and just post every individuals list posted there?
only other person in my family to watch anime with me was my brother, but he is not all that into it as much as i am he likes the movies more. my mother has seen some of what i watch lol i watched about anything lol
I think Spirited Away is the best anime movie with the family.
Ano Hi Mita Hana? Sure if you want the entire family “get together” to be crying at the end of each episode. That would be the pinnacle of awkward.
My mom liked Ranma & my brother liked Urusei Yatsura. However, these days Akane Tendo has been replaced with Katara in my mother’s affections.
Seriously with a family? My votes:
Ame to Shoujo to Atashi no Tegami (OVA)
Bamboo Blade
Honey and Clover
Kirarin Revolution
Mushishi
Sakura Taisen
Summer Wars (OVA)
Tamayura
Touhou (doujin OVA)
Windy Tales
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou / “Quiet Country Cafe”
Ika Musume at 9th?
/why
Well i’m quite surprised that Clannad or Clannad ~After Story~ didn’t make it…
Minami-Ke!
Hands down
Clannad, Kanon, School Rumble, Seto no Hanayome, Kaleido Star are good animes to watch with the family.
Or alone, too, of course.
I watched Cowboy Bebop knocking the heavens door with my brother, father and his girlfriend few years backwards.
#1 Boku no Pico
Family: What’s this shit, YOOOOOOOOO WTF!!!
I think nichijou should be on top instead
I don’t think my family appreciate anime anyway
I watched Yosuga no Sora with my family, Queen’s Blade too.
Oh, and I play datesims with my family too.
IT MIGHT SOUND ABSURD, BUT THAT’S HOW A TRUE MAN LIVES!
I never watched Elfen Lied, the hype kind of a turn-off for me.
Surprise i don’t see that one anime (i don’t remmember exact name, but the main character is a cat named Chi). How about Doraemon? Instant classic.
I actually watch anime with my family once before, but considered it was “Spirited Away” and being Oscar-winner, i don’t think that’d count.
Maybe you’re thinking of Chi’s Sweet Home?
dennou coil?
Tiger and Bunny? I didn’t realize comic-style superhero stuff was a family thing in Japan… Or is it the strength of the not-so-stealth advertisements?
It’s the story.
WATCH ALL YOUR SHOWS LIKE A MAN! (in your room)
Yep
How about Yosuga no Sora with your sister?
I better like watch Kiss×sis with my sisters
I saw what you did there.
Didnt worked for me.
Great way to raise a wincest flag
Watched a lot of anime with my mother. She has been watching One piece for about 4 years now. She also like Gundam and Macross series very much. Strange mother, but I like how we sometimes watch anime together like it’s some kind of family movie xD
My mom is friggin nuts for Bleach and Naruto, I keep trying to open her eyes to the light, to actually good anime, but it is always to no avail.
lol i watch anime with my mom too in fact we watched all of code geass a few days ago and both of us cried 😀
According to MyAnimeList, my mom’s list has a longer “days played” value than mine because she watched all of Astro Boy and Candy Candy before I was born.
I have watched nearly every anime I have seen myself with my mom. She has watched Needless, Golden Boy, The World God Only Knows, Mushishi, Nurarihyon, Working!!, Usagi Drop, Mai Hime, Pandora Hearts, Shakugan no Shana, Yakitate!! Japan, Gurren Lagann, Special A, Umineko, Vampire Knight, Fate/Stay Night, Code Geass, and much more.
She’s a really awesome mom. We’ve been watching currently airing anime and she may even start watching episodes without me when I go back to college in September… if I’m too busy to watch it with her. (She’s loving Steins;Gate).
I must add that watching Golden Boy episode 5 was rather… awkward.
Much of anime IS for family viewing. Think Ghibli movies etc.
I wish I had cool parents like that. I guess some people just love falling into age-ist stereotypes.
And to think many people in my family used to be gigantic anime fans way in the day. Can’t really tell that’s the case anymore.
My father watches a bunch of anime with me and my brother (about 10 shows each season). My mother doesn’t watch anime at all. My old man has always been pretty defiant about keeping up with new things despite aging. My mother does cross-stitch and facebook.
Out of the list presented here, we’ve watched (or are watching) Tiger & Bunny, Usagi Drop, Working!! and K-On!. Most of the other shows we either didn’t like or didn’t even look at… Those four are definitely pretty family friendly though.
Yeah, me too. And with my sister too. But she´s more picky.
Mai-hime, Clannad, Kanon, Elfen Lied, Macross Frontier, Madoka, Dragon Ball, Sengoku Otome, Higurashi, K-on!,School Rumble are some of the shows that we watched together.
That is awesome. I am a little envious.
Death Note seems ok.
i dropped Tiger&Bunny after episode 12, so…
did something completely insane happen in episode 13+ that made the show better or why does everyone love it so much?
Yeah panty shots and 3 lolis entered the show at episode 17 surprisingly, so if i were you i would restart at 12 or you will be missing out
The show gets a bit more serious after Jake is down with his part.
if Ro-Kyu-Bu’s on the list, what would Ishihara said?
i would have recommended Gintama, or maybe Nichijou
Well, I did give my mother Higurashi’s first season as present and apparently she liked it.
1. Strike Witches
2. Sky Girls
Especially family friendly.
Hey! I watched Strike Witches with my family.
Just to name a few family friendly anime:
Koi Kaze, Aki Sora, Kurenai, True Tears, Yosuga no Sora, Candy Boy, KissxSis, Aki Sora, and Boku wa Imouto ni Koi wo Suru.
As in if you want to watch these with your mom and sisters.
>Aki Sora
so good, it had to be mentioned twice
any more animes like these? 😀
Inb4 somebody mentions Boku no Pico
I like Nichijou.
But I’m pretty sure my family would disown me if I had to make them watch it.
I watched hajime no ippo and monster with my family and they like it
30 sai no hoken taiku came in 23rd…Lol
I’m surprised that queens blade didn’t make the list
My family watches Queens Blade & Seikon no Qwaser regularly.
Very educational, specially for younger ones!
No, it should be Seikon No Qwaser. It’ll teach young kids and every father how hard it is to be a mother breastfeeding her children.
Oh…Seikon No Qwaser…
I think the BIG-BREAST will scare kids to death.(The BIG-BREAST scare me as well
I watch Queens Blade with my family.
i watch aki sora with my sis while we’re screwing each other? damn i’m screwed up.
in the nude
NO.1# K-ON
No, its not ! Finally !!
Heh, but this time, K-on! deserves a higher place. Weird, isnt?
FU
Hater gonna hate
Or Elfin Lied and Higurashi
My mother and I watched “Berserk” (DVD) about 4 years ago when I bought it in Christmas during Amazon’s holiday sale…
I swear…
Her eyes were wide as saucers and she was smiling every time Guts (main character) mutilates a poor bastard on the screen with his monster of a sword…
She loves “Berserk” as much as she loves the anime version of “Guyver: Dark Hero”, being she was the one who introduced me to the latter (only watched the 2 TV movie versions directed by the same guy who made Power Rangers)…
She’s really old-school…In the violence department~
Did you guys watch Violence Jack together too? LOL
Bible Black too. This list is fail.
My parents watched Elfen Lied. I think they’ve
ordered the first DVD of Amazon, probably thinking
it was a fantasy film. Well apparently they’ve
liked it and ordered the remaining DVDs too.
I’ve seen Elfen Lied months after them.
We did watch NGE 1.11 and 2.22 together, DBZ, Summer
Wars, The Girl Who Lept Through Time, some Ranma and
Slayers back in the day.
I’m surprised K-ON didn’t hit the top on this one.
I started watching Yosuga no Sora with my entire family. Needless to say, we loved it.
Wow great parents you have!
mine will not understand matter how much i
try to explain to them… they think it’s kids stuff
your parents are geek, i would disown them.
or the latest Manyuu hikenchou, lol
but i did recommended Angel Beats! and Toradora to my sister and she likes it…
@16:51
It’s animated by the same people who did Clannad, so the animation is better than average. The original concept is unique, the characters are haruhi ripoffs, the plot is alright, theres CUTE ANIME GIRLS SINGING AWESOME MUSIC, theres CUTE ANIME GIRLS TRANSFORMING INTO CUTE KILLING MACHINES….
Lots of stuff going for it. Watch or it don’t…. but make sure you watch it in 1080p
Angle Beats was too short as the worst part of that series so characters you’ll grow to like really don’t get to shine as much.
+
Family friendly~~~ I’d suggest the wonderful family get together show ‘Shiki’! Exspecially at the end where neighbors truly unite and get ‘er done for each other, and help with the use of their tractors to root out pesky varmits at the “farm”. The complete ending isn’t quite good but the trip is.
Lol I’m pretty sure your sister would be scarred silly of you for a long long time if you shower her KissXSis aha
Angel Beats is similar to CLANNAD in a way
Angel Beats problem is just Bad pacing, as in too fast pace and nothing is explained right.
Pft! None of those would get me kicked out of my house. Now things like Ashtarotte no Omocha… That would. Heck, there were moments when I nearly kicked myself out of the house for watching it.
There is nothing similar to Angel Beats and it is really good.
Is Angel Beats any good? Because I read about it in Wiki and it looks like peace of crap.
Which other amine is similar to it?
No KissXSis? xD
Dunno bout my family haha..
This is a good list & the reasoning that backs it.
While its true that otaku aren’t actually bred. If you & your family can enjoy anime. Who cares what anyone else may think.
I’d rather have my daugter into anime than learning to be an exhibitionist on youtube.
Can’t you have both?
My 14-year-old son absolutely loves anime, and we watch it together all the time. He couldn’t wait ’till new episodes of Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka came out last season, and this season he’s really into Baka to Test, Kamisama Dolls and SKET Dance. He loved K-ON! (he’s a drummer and loves Ritsu) and Haruhi — he even has an SOS-Dan messenger bag.
I started him off watching GUNDAM when he was very little.
Something must have gone wrong if he went from Gundam to K-On…
yeah, bad parenting at fault ^^
I think some of those anime have somewhat suggestive themes? Also, Seikon no Qwaser made the list?! WTF?! It shouldn’t even be on the list at all!!
Poll confirmed for trolled/troll….
I actually expected Yosuga no Sora to make it in to the top 10.
“I think some of those anime have somewhat suggestive themes? ”
Yeah, but so do most of the classic Fairy Tales and such. “Suggestive themes” are dealt with most effectively and healthy within the family, IMO.
It was at the very bottom with hardly any votes though, and with the vast majority of the votes in the top 10, suggesting that the effect is not too bad at all.
the question is on how did it get on the poll though…
Probably same reason that Elfen Lied would make it on the list, if the same query was posted here.
LOL! K-ON
Did the voters read the question!?
K-on? Sure, if my family is suffering from some form of mass insomnia.
k-on being on this list makes it instantly bs.
Other than that, i would like to watch most of studio ghibli’s films, would be awesome <_<
I really don’t get the all around hate for K-on, sure it didn’t have plot but then again, it wasn’t plot it was advertising, A lot of people hate K-on because they want to change it to something it’s not, imagine anime as pizza, just because you don’t like let’s say Hawaiian Pizza does NOT mean it fails to be a good pizza -_- If you don’t like K-on then you don’t, if a lot of us hate K-on then we do, but that does NOT mean K-on is a bad anime, after all a lot of other people liked K-on not just from Japan but parts around the world, So that means that K-on was NOT bad anime, just that there happened to be either a lot more who hated it, or maybe even because of the fact that maybe a lot more people than usual spoke out. But even after all that you still have the nerve to say those people who liked K-on have bad taste, then consider how many they are like visiting sites that like it, and how many you who hate it
Plus I’ve seen people who never liked “slice of life” to begin with and then watched K-on just because it became popular and said “They didn’t like it” and I was like “Well Duuuuh”
K-on for all it’s negative points to a lot of people, definitely DOES NOT Fail as a family friendly show, any other talk is just pure and biased hate which is stupid, to say a show no one forced you to watch is stupid is well stupid, of-course you could say you hate it but to state it as FACT just because you or a group of you say it is…poor you
Aww, No Elfen Lied on the list.
That’s good quality family show. 😀
—–
Elfen Lied was actually 1 of the “banned shows” from showing in my College Anime Club.
Kinda pissed many of us off.
STUPID SANKAKU LIS-
Hey wait, this thread isn’t that bad.
Which only has 1 reason.
K-ON =/= Nr. 1
