No its more like I watch anime to escape reality as I have a crappy life, not to make me feel even crappier. That's my take on liking shows like K-On, but yeah sometimes I do want to watch something that makes me think and there are still plenty of anime out there for that.

It's amazing how these lists are always limited to shows from the last one or two years (with a few exceptions). You'd think anime didn't exist until recently. ;)

Why is TokiKake on there...? It was fairly good, not a "series", nor really all that hyped to be overrated...
My opinion on SanCom's lists:
Personally, I like these lists, just because I like to read about what otaku actually living in Japan think about anime.
However, I think that it's dumb how a big deal is made about how "the memory of the average anime fan extends back only two seasons at most".
I highly doubt that this is true. If you ask a Japanese otaku what his favorite anime was from, say, 2003, I don't think he'll be lost looking for an answer.
The inclusion of recent anime is simply because that's what's popular. It happens on American TV too. You wouldn't see a TV show from the 90's on a list of CURRENT popular shows.
It's all about the present. The present is all that's important. Therefore, recent anime is most likely to top a list because it is in the present or near past.
I also noticed that pretty much everybody always posts the same kind of comments for every list. You say that it's ridiculous for K-ON! to top all these lists, but never explain why.

LOL I love this list ! K-ON! is one of my favorite animes ! ( If not my absolute favorite ) People will always troll something that's popular I guess. I don't even get how the word ,, overrated '' exists, to my knowledge it means something like ,, disliked for being popular by people who think that it is not as good as people think. '' Now how exactly is that possible ? It's popular because a large majority of people find it interesting, so that makes it bad ? Why would I listen to the minority ? People like that are idiots, there's a reason unpopular anime are unpopular and popular anime is popular. It happens something like this :
Person watches an anime
Person is entertained and is in a happy good mood now
Seeking to feel good and happy some more as practically every human does, watches more of said anime
Many people do this thus increasing the popularity
Then you get people who vote in lists like this who can't understand why it is popular. Really ? Do I need to spell it out ? IT'S POPULAR BECAUSE MANY PEOPLE WATCH IT AND ARE INTERESTED IN IT ! What is so hard to understand about that ? Are there people in the world that are just so cynical that if they don't like it then no-one can ? I feel bad for those people. Oh, but that is not always true...
As a matter of fact, a lot of people watch some animes, namely those deemed as "mainstream", simply because... well, they are mainstream. And they do so because, hey, everybody seems to do the same, so they want to see what all the ruckus is about. This, in turn, creates a "fake popularity" and, in most cases, said person will automatically like that anime since his initial thought of "this anime must be good if it is that popular" was very strong. And trust me: that happens a lot.
That is how "overrated" is born. Not only for anime, but for any form of entertainment, specially those under a renowned brand and/or enterprise. A good example: Highschool of the Dead (an anime which I think would have easily made it to this list if it was recent, but, as already stated here, this site's tops usually fail to look-past over 2 years for the nominees)
So, no, "overrated" does not always imply people hating on anything popular. Moreover, it criticizes the source of said popularity to the date.
Many of these are popular because they were actually good, or at least entertaining.

Fans that can't understand the popularity of an Anime, simply haven't watched that Anime at all. That's why they can't understand!
Taken from my own experience. For example, I personally consider K-ON! and Madoka overrated. But I wouldn't have voted them in such a poll, because I haven't watched them and I don't have the right to vote (in my opinion)!
