Well reality also gave me anime. I don't use anime to escape from reality but to complement it.
Same here a well. Anime puts me in happier, more interesting places than I would ever have otherwise. Sounds pathetic, I know, but it's true.

The reasons I watch anime:
1)Because I have the hots for several female seiyuu who I, being American, have about zero chance with, even if I could go to Japan.
2)Because there aren't many good shows on TV anymore. Except for game shows, Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Fallon, Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, The Simpsons, Robot Chicken, The Office and Bill Maher. But those are the ones I watch the most.
3)I'm not hip enough to be a "brony".

Similar, I guess, however for my part I already did the pony thing back in the '80s when my sister was into them.

Also, I haven't been able to appreciate the Simpsons in years, The Office jumped the shark after the wedding IMO, I haven't watched game shows much since Bob Barker retired, and the only talk show host I really care for is Ferguson (Conan is okay, but really nothing special, Letterman used to be great, but has really lost his edge, and while I used to enjoy Jon Stewart more, his shtick has gotten old; Colbert's was already old before he got his own show; Leno can go die in a fire, and I've felt that way literally since he replaced Johnny). I can't stand any of the political show hosts of any faction (they are all arrogant, pompous blowhards, and none of them represent my views anyway). Olbermann was great when he was on ESPN, now he's just bitter and self-absorbed - nothing but a left-wing counterpart to Limbaugh and O'Reilly. Maddow is no better, IMO, and adds being a man-hating dyke on top of it.
Those are my opinions, though.
In the end, most of the live-action TV I watch that isn't sports is what's brought over from the BBC (Doctor Who and Top Gear, mostly).
