It is something that must be looked at honestly in the near future to truly balance the idea of sex crimes. I’ve said it before here, but women having no ability to take responsibility for what happened to them should they be raped is not actually a good thing. They lose all ability to take control of their lives and they suddenly become terrified that it can happen anytime, anywhere, and can cease to function. To treat a rape victim as completely unable to recognize if they could have done something differently to prevent it, like locked a door, walked with a friend, gone a different route through a neighborhood that isn’t so bad, is to remove their power completely and truly put them in a state of ‘having been raped’ rather than ‘forced to have sex.’ They are completely different, because the former is a state of victimhood. The latter is an event that has no meaning unless your mind adds meaning to it. Things like the above, if women are counseled to recognize things that they could control in the scenario, they can actually take responsibility without BLAMING themselves, which is the key. Blaming yourself is useless, recognizing how to learn from something is where you gain power from it, no matter what it is.

That is in the case of random street assaults and the like. In terms of situations where a woman changes her mind afterward, that really must be given a completely different name. Because it is not, and is never rape. If a guy can convince a girl to sleep with him and she regrets it later, it’s her mistake, not his. He was just a good salesman and gave her what he promised. He sold the idea that she would benefit from having sex with him. Obviously if she demanded protection and he didn’t use it, he should take some responsibility, but that’s still not rape. It cannot and should not ever be, because then even consensual sex can become rape any damn time a woman pleases, and that’s beyond ridiculous.
