Fans of Mahou Shoujo Madoka have been delighted to note that for the Blu-ray release Shaft has (as usual) taken the opportunity to fix all the dodgily animated bits and substantially upgrade many of the merely “alright” parts, resulting in the definitive magical puella experience.
There are now at least three versions of each episode – the terrestrial TV version, the premium AT-X version and the BD version.
The OP with all three, showing some rather severe quality issues in the original TV version:

It's a totally different anime after these so-called "fixes." :P
Oddly enough, since most of us are already too used to Shaft's surreal presentation, a lot of us probably didn't see those background changes coming.
If anything, this is the most appropriate BD sales strategy; worth watching the TV version, worth MORE owning the BD.
Shaft=Simply Amazing
I couldn't imagine how they'd be able to make it better but I guess they just did
Shaft animation is horrible. Most scenes are simply still images with sound or something else because it's easier to animate, etc.
Although they tend to produce original animes with good history/content. And ONLY for this I praise them, since this lacks from almost any anime nowadays.
Makes me feel that some of the negative comments are coming from Narutards or something.
Ya don't need to always depend on expensive kinds of presentation. A good story can make anything epic but apparently a lot of people won't be satisfied unless animators break their hands.
Just say it if ya don't like or understand the story enough to go on bad mouthing the animation >>STYLE<< of Shaft then just don't watch any of them and stick to the mainstream stuff
@Diemeow23: very true - I've seen some god-awful shit animated on ones. High frame rate =/= high quality animation. Shaft often use a very low frame rate, and instead put a lot of effort into those hold frames (I mean, just look at the architecture porn). It's what sets them apart from the other studios and gives them their unique style.
OK, not everybody likes it, which is fine because different people have different tastes. But it's simply unfair to pick on just one particular choice that the animators made and call the whole thing shit just because of that.
Yeah, I can see it's a style with all the "Shafted" things out there.
And you see, even if it was a style, imagine you in a cinema, and the movie you are watching is just a fucking ton of photos and voices.
Gainax is still the best studio in my opinion. They have nice titles, their own style and well made animations.
Aside from Bakemonogatari(still loved it though)
Problem is that you judge them from their frame rate not their actual content. Does everything have to OVA expensive for your satisfaction? These thing are more expensive to make then you might think
I'd at least be able to relate since I draw anime as a hobby
You see, not animating is not the same as having bad animation, and in SHAFT's case I would say it is a matter of style rather than lack of production values.
That distinctive style is what sets them apart and beyond all other animation studios.
Sigh, why does nobody instead praise Shaft for their extremely unique and stylized way of dealing with deadlines and budgets? I mean, they could have just taken the route that so many other studios go down and shell out crappy animation, but instead they do their best to work with what they got and come up with interesting ways to save a bit on expenses.
"I'd at least be able to relate since I draw anime as a hobby"
lol... I think this line just invalidated your opinion since it proves you have no idea what you're talking about.
P.S. It's clear you haven't watched Bakemonogatari because that is the definitive example of SHAFT QUALITY ANIMATION.
Fucking hell, some people just do not understand art. Saying that a series is graphically bad for not having constant animation is like saying an oil painting is bad because not every bit of it has vivid colours.
Even if a movie is "just a fucking ton of photos and voices", that does not make it bad. Unless it is mainly about explosions which seems like something just for you, you boorish anon.
I have watched the whole series twice even
I mean to point out the still frames and those blank frames in Bakemonogatari
Ya know those red and black "frame 001 cut" instances where most forums say were scenes they couldn't finish in time, those are what people mostly argue about. Those were fine for me but it seems to be not so for most people
Or maybe you watched the blu-rays I don't know if they fixed those in the CDs
Just hurts me to hear that you thought I didn't watch the series!
I have three posters stuck on my wall for crying out load *cue exaggerated crying*
It adds even more to Kyuubee's creepiness that he remains identical while everything around him has dramatically changed...
They're pleasing my genitalia twice.
More importantly I wonder if they're going to show more guro, perhaps in the third or last episode.
I think an extended mami mogu mogu scene is unavoidable.
Yeah. A lot of that counts as full one revisionism. It's a veritible Star Wars SE of background changes and CGI additions. I'm for fixing up some crude drawings, but did they have to CG every Soul Gem now, even the well drawn ones? I rather liked how Mami's looked different from Homura's.
Reminds me why I collect TV versions.
They basically "killed" Madoka
Removing colour and lowering the brightness in an improvement? Plus, I like Mami not having tons of crap in her house.
I agree; her empty house was actually a kind of reflection over what kind of life Puella Magi end up having: lonely and empty, as opposed to Madoka's lively one. The changes look nice, but the contrast between life styles goes better with the overall feel of the story.
That actually makes more sense. Because she is lonely that's why she needs something to fill up her emptiness. It just shows how she want to live the best out of her life.
Speaking of head. I wonder if that will be uncensored. :o
mumi why
I preferred the foreshadowing reflection of Mumi's head on the table in TV version. ;_;
Shows what these kind of changes can do. It looks nice, but if if it alters ones perception, it's more than just plussing some dodgy animation. Kamijo's hospital is now foreboding, as another example.
Too much changes is unacceptable, make us feel like rewatching from the start again.
same
her house looks good and clean being empty
I like the changes overall, but Mami's apartment does seem a bit too cluttered now. In the original version, it has sort of a surreal emptiness, giving the impression that she first and foremost lives to be a magical girl, and that her personal life takes a back seat to this. Her redesigned residence looks a bit too 'normal', as though she lives a mostly normal life and is just a magical girl on the side.
I can hardly tell the difference. I don't think its an improvement.
This anime was great because they were willing to make it dark and not afraid to kill of characters to heighten the effect. Made the whole thing more real than most magical girl anime. They need to put back the scenes they cut because of the tsunami if they want it to rock and be true to the spirit behind the show.
Indeed the extremes they were willing to go to for the sake of the story made the show.
Is there any actual evidence that whole scenes were cut?
Yes, Sankaku even had an article on this.

Madoka = God
Homura = Jesus
Oh ...
Shi. . . . ;_;
yeah & QB is the devil...
*cries manly tears*
Homura is God deep in my heart ;_;
Homura == Dio
Homerun = Dio Brando + Dr.WHO
why did they put so much furniture in mami's apartment? when i saw her apartment for the first time i was thinking that it was empty to show how her life was, idk, empty ? or something? and now all that stuff is in there xD
Madoka!!!
She died for our sins
It is. lol what an asshole
Lol wow. I hope that wasn't a spoiler.
She's loli Jesus.
Actually she died for the sake of magical girls, and sort of just stuck the middle finger to the rest of humanity.
Don't worry, she didn't actually die.
You haven't seen the series but your already reading article in sankaku about the blu-ray sales?
Ok I'll watch the DVD version although not my taste in anime but the controversy makes me curious.
