Japanese cosplay fans have been striving to select the cosplay pictures they think should be regarded as the finest of art, and casting an eye over their selection seems to more than validate the notion that cosplay can be as artistic as illustration or photography…
On a slightly more serious side (or funnier side), their cosplay page is filled with niche characters all done in meticulous detail. They're like the Russian Tomia!:
Meticulous detail is precisely what cosplay needs these days.
Too much crappy costumes being made for the reason that "it's only for fun". Personally, I don't give a crap if it's for fun or not - You do something, you do something well. Or not do it at all. There is no try.
I fully agree. I think this is actually the first time I've seen Beatrice consplayed, and the results aren't bad. I wish there was a better background, though, it's not that impressive without any atmophere.
So the answer is to calclify stuff

It all makes sense now ^_^
It's snake He just takes out a badguy for a pack XD
Seems to me like Kamen Roshi is a popular choice, don't know why. Maybe he's easy and distinct, maybe he's memorable, maybe people just like his character :)
No it doesn't. The fashion design is not made by the cosplayer, they are merely attempts to copy fashion already made.
It's a show of craftsmanship for sure, but cosplayers are as much artists as the worker grunt who put together a building following blueprint. The architect of the building might be called an artist, but the carpenter, no. Same thing with cosplay, the character designer who made the fashions and designs might be an artist, the cosplayer however is just a carpenter following a blueprint.
Nor is the photography something that is integral to cosplay. That cosplayers sometimes get photographed doesn't make them artists, you could just as well claim that the police profession is artistic because you took a few photographs of a traffic warden.
Can you even call the Horo one cosplay? It's just a picture of a naked girl, and the ears and tail were shopped on. I know it's common to enhance cosplay pics with some shopping action, and that's fine, but in this case there is literally nothing cosplay about the original pic.
I totally agree. Seriously everyone needs to watch this one, its like Psycho Pass, Samurai Champaloo and Shingeki no Bahamut Genesis had a baby.... More
Censorship and "fanfiction" too... Seems like a lot of quests have been rewritten for some more than dubious reasons and sometime the NA/EU quests' stories... More
Now, the big question is how much they changed, edited, and removed while localizing the game because several of their employees were oversensitive babies who... More
master roshi is badman
Best Cosplay EVER.
Master Roshi FTW ^_^
And 3 Kuronekos in a row?
I can die a happy otaku now!
An art is an art, but I would totally stick my dick into one of those artistic girl's poopers.
Fuck morals.
Jessie and James LOL

in Russia, you not cosplaying anime, but anime cosplaying you! 0_o
A Russian should cosplay the russian loli from Rizelmine. Or Ilyasviel.
In russia if you have russian natonality you're deported...

Wow just wow the attention to detail is superb and both of them are really cute and in some cosplays just down right gorgeous.
yes, they're russian.
I recently came across a few relatively realistic portrayals of Phoenix Wright that I thought was profoundly loltastic.
really liked ff vii, fate/stay night, and death note cosplay :D
Cosplay is art, it is not any functionally different than any other live display of acting. The clothing is just a given with acting/modeling.
It can't be art, be the only reason that the cosplayer has no integrity of his work.
"It is through art and art alone people discovers the beauty of life."
-Oscar Wilde
"To be true and fine and moist and sticky and lovely, one has to believe that he or she is true and fine and moist and sticky and lovely."
-Stephen Fry in how to be gorgeous
I see they are doing a fine job.
MOAR of pic 001!
!!!
yesh! more of that fox girl please though actually I have seen her somewhere b4, isnt she a model for nude magazine or somethin? XD
her name is Elle B. from Met-Art. Those ears and tail were photoshopped in.
I say in the other image they were photoshopped out!
Which is 04?
BEATORICCHE!!!!!!!!!!!!
Most amazing douch'e bag ever. I am so happy they did such a good job w/ it XD.

ok.... pic 007 and 009 are supposed to be?.... just random porn pictures?
i think 007 is Nico Robin. dunno about 009 though.
Haha when I saw her my eyes lit up and I smiled cuz it made the list.
Oh my, those horo, kuroneko, and saber cosplay were pretty epic.
That Kuroneko was so spot on... if 2D kuroneko came to life that is EXACTLY how she would look
Number 9 was the best hahaha
agree.
kuroneko, saber and robin def awesome :)
I would love to see more of this cosplay from pic 001 :)
So where are the reasons?
I'm going to say the only one reason why cosplay is NOT art: The cosplayer has no integrity of the work.
I love cosplays, and all that, but is not art.
The last must have be the Legendary Tao Pai Pai pic... that's the best cosplay I have seen ever!
Nice eye candy, but most of them aren't exactly "artistic." Nice try though.
Whoa, there are white people here? Artefact, I expect more racism out of you! Shame shame.
It's art because once the costume and makeup come off, they are ugly as hell!
Ok where can I buy the Full Metal Gear Costume!

Art? Eeeh... maybe. But I call it a very lonely waste of time and money.
aren't some of these HEAVILY photoshopped? shinku's face looks shopped in.
I found the first pic arousing and disturbing at the same time.
I like the variety.
And cosplay is an art. It combines the art of photography and fashion design.
No it doesn't. The fashion design is not made by the cosplayer, they are merely attempts to copy fashion already made.
