Ishihara: “Quake is Divine Retribution Against Japan”

Tokyo’s reigning rape novelist Shintaro Ishihara has proclaimed the recent earthquake and tsunami are divine punishment (“tenbatsu”) for the sinful depravity the Japanese people now embody.

Asahi press club journalists quote him as saying the following when asked “how should the Japanese people view the quake?” in connection with the recent power trouble:

The identity of the Japanese people is greed.

This tsunami represents a good opportunity to cleanse this greed, and one we must avail ourselves of.

Indeed, I think this is divine punishment.

When asked by an incredulous journalist as to whether this was an imprudent utterance better not reported, he responded “It may be harsh for the victims to hear, but I want you to take it down and report it.”

He is currently running for his 4th term.

Ya know, comments about our manga I can let slide as being remarks of a total asshole, but the remark he made this time, he should be getting fatal lead poisoning for this one.

If he gets re elected now, then all I can say is the average Japanese voter is as much a fucking retard as he is.

    This remark is inexcusable.

that includes me - i thought he was a mere moralist faggot, but he is in fact nothing short of barking mad
hope he will completely deny any help from rather untouched tokyo to the devastated regions and some random mother who lost her entire family will strangle him with his 100 dollar tie

I'm going to play devil's advocate and you may rate it down but I must.

My interpretation of this is that that's how he sees his nation (probably himself too) and finds that deplorable.

We all should take back and look at ourselves while trying to better ourselves and it's easier when there's a crisis or something that diminish us.

You can argue about the right and wrong but I wonder about the tone he used while saying that. And the fact that he stated that he wanted this to be heard despite the consequences makes me feel like its a silent cry.

Finally, I'm sure he's affected by the crisis in his country. I would rather call it brutal honesty than insensitivity and it might actually strike home to some people.

your /2 cents is wrong. "my political opponent is 1/4 non-japanese." "gays and mental retards are worthless." "young people have no motivation." "Anime and manga fans genes are inferior."

Why would you take the words of a racist, xenophobic, ignorant retard seriously?

    Comment by Anonymous
    06:04 15/03/2011 # ! Neutral (0)

what did you say to actually be proven right or wrong?

everything you said equated to "he stated his opinion. i'm not going to say it was right or wrong. but that's his opinion."

there was no actually meaning to your comment to judge right or wrong to begin with.

what everyone else is saying is the simple fact that he may truly have this opinion doesn't make it right or even valuable as an opinion.
just because it's his interpretation doesn't mean his interpretation can't be wrong.

"everyone's entitled to an opinion", but everyone forgets the second half of that saying which is that not all opinions are equal.

some opinions are just stupid and there is no value in valuing racist bigoted ignorance.

people get so wrapped up in editorial egalitarianism that they forget some opinions, some positions, some ideas are in fact just wrong.
and there is no constructive value, in fact it can be actually DESTRUCTIVE, in propping up ignorance and pretending it's just an alternate angle of enlightenment.

well you can never say that killing people is divine retribution, good or bad people it's still killing, what if you where in that area or had relatives?would you take it as a joke as he does?if japan's people did something bad, they would be punished with bad luck, bad economy or other things but killing some people because some other people did something bad...does that sound correct to you?even if those people weren't innocent there where children killed too, can you say they did something bad to deserve this "divine retribution"?would you kill a murderer's family just because he killed some1 else?
so don't ever call this a divine retribution.

Any fictional crime, violence or anything can be easily swept under the ban. It's the potential to completely stifle freedom of speech. Ishihara himself said freedom of speech shouldn't exist. First we have a self-righteous eco-terrorist talking about karma and divine retribution, and now we have a self-righteous f*cktard joining the frey...

I don't know if he has brass balls for talking smack like that to the victims and the entire nation in light of this tragedy or if he's just over the DEEP END from being senile and blinded by his position...

Either way, he needs a couple of doses of some lead aspirin betwixt his tired eyes...

That picture of him on top would look good in black-and-white above his coffin...

His face...It's like he is lost in the times, blinded/drunk by power, and/or just involuntarily setting himself up to for a hit...

Fool...Way, way, way past his mental expiration date...

No politician (evil, or lesser-evil...In the states anyway) would spout sh*t like that after a tragic event...ESPECIALLY TO THE VICTIMS!!!

I'm afraid for the future of Japan...I was afraid of what would happen to anime, games and freedom of expression back then, but now I feel unadulterated pity and remorse to what the people will go through IF THEY KEEP F*CKING VOTING PEOPLE LIKE HIM INTO POWER...

“It may be harsh for the victims to hear, but I want you to take it down and report it.”

    Harsh..? HARSH!?!

You shouldn't have bloody said it to begin with, you f*cking moron...

"The identity of the Japanese people is greed.

This tsunami represents a good opportunity to cleanse this greed, and one we must avail ourselves of."

    And cleansing greed!?! Heartless idiot...

All those men, women, and children that died must be greedy then...

By the goddesses of Gensokyo, you think you're a religious icon now..?

If you said sh*t like that in the USA you will have zero percent of getting voted...And probably get sued/taken to court for that...

If he gets voted even after he said this, I will feel no pity for the people of Japan...That goes for both the senior citizens and the young generation...

You all decide your future, ban/insult/censorship or whatever...People like him will get away with it...

I can't say anymore...I hate ranting pointlessly to deaf ears...

Damn it, I wish I was born Japanese (or at least migrated to Japan when I was a wee lad) so I could stand up to this f*ck...

    Maybe in another universe...

    *sighs sadly*

Japan...For your sake, at least choose the lesser evil when you vote...

Or at least someone that is knowledgeable and humble enough in the modern times and ways of the world's machinations today...

Watson was vague and used humankind in general vs naming any groups.

The quake would have still happen even if the whales were left alone and Japan acted like a bunch of Amish.
As both events are completely unrelated to plate tectonics.

Now the jelly fish outbreak and the oceans becoming a giant toilet can be attributed to decimation of the whale population, over fishing, and pollution because they are related.
