Seriously, this show is getting more and more awesome with each passing episode. I really do feel bad for those who gave the show a pass just because of the 'cute' character designs and the name 'mahou shoujo' in the title.
For me, I'd say it's pretty near Ga-Rei in terms of the emotional content (with the best friend losing herself to evil and all). However, I think that Ga-Rei did a better job in building up the character relationships as it's kinda rushed in Madoka. But in terms of plot twists, Madoka wins hands down.
Now I want a Kyuube plush more than ever to put by my bedside..

Hear hear! I was curious about this show because I love Hidamari Sketch, so I'm glad to have picked it up.
I hope this show gets more FUCKED UP in a convoluted, dark awesome way as it's been doing till now, and if it has a "good" ending, make it bittersweet leaning towards bitter. All in logic to what's going on of course, but after getting so gritty it'd be a shame to make this have a happy ending.
That scene of QB getting literally full of bullet holes made my day, until I watch his "revival" which prompted to say "FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU--"
... you DO realize that this has a writer that has been quoted to "hate human happiness" thus making him "unable to make a happy ending". we'll be lucky if we get a pitch black ending with a side of bitter! I'm pretty sure you can call off any hope of a happy ending, at the first ep, even.

Yes, I totally agree with the relation to Ga-Rei Zero. I've been looking for more animes like it as everything in reality (or the magical world) doesn't end up happy go lucky.
This is definitively one of my top 5 anime and one that will likely be remembered for plot and story over its cute characters...
And yes, type manipulation ftw! IMO, nothing's more powerful than that.
Ga-Rei Zero kicks off real great and steps up slowly. Personally, I find Madoka Magica way more appealing that Ga-Rei Zero as the plot twist and character development feel more balanced.
I gave up on gay-rape 0000 after the beginnings of the third episode~ The first two where simply awesome, but then you see the main character was a whiny emo-riftic bitch skank. Crying as she sees everybody get tore into chunky bits, crying / whining instead of fucking KILL the Other crazy bitch~ (1)Kill bitch - (2)Begin crying AFTERWARDs! Damn shame it was animated pretty good too~~~
Actually, as Ga Rei Zero was an anime with the sole reason to show how deepshit is the relation between the two main characters in Ga Rei the manga, I think you shouldn't even be comparing it to Madoka.
