Horror at Korean Pig Cull

Scenes of hundreds of live pigs being shovelled into a pit with the aid of a backhoe and then buried alive as part of a recent South Korean foot-and-mouth cull have shocked animal-welfare advocates.

The video, which as the description suggests may be disturbing, at least to people ignorant of where their meat comes from:

Player 1

Why it was considered too much trouble to kill the pigs before throwing them in the pit is not clear.

Just whether the pigs would have been any better off being shot in the head and gutted at a slaughterhouse in the usual manner (assuming Korea practices at least minimally “humane” slaughter, somewhat doubtful in light of the video and various other incidents) is of course a matter of some debate.

Why are the farmers everywhere still not using vaccins on the cows, pigs and so on? Otherwise this wouldn't have happened. Miss Piggy is not amused with this!

    Comment by Anonymous

Because you end up with an adulterated product. For example, if you give antibiotics to a sick cow with mastitis, the milk may end up with antibiotic residues. This could be fatal to someone drinking the milk who is allergic to antibiotics. Also, you may end up destroying starter cultures in other products derived from that milk, such as cheese.

    Comment by Anonymous

    1) It's expensive (to develop said vaccines, then to sell those for a profit).
    2) You end up with the same problem that has cropped up in hospitals with MRSA and the like: you selectively breed antibiotic-resistant strains, making the problem even harder to control.

Mostly 1, though. Farm animals are already regularly fed many, many different antibiotics in order to control other diseases (which results in those 'normal' diseases becoming resistant, requiring more -and more varieties of - antibiotics to be administered, ad nauseum).

    vaccines =/= antibiotics

Vaccines don't end up in the milk and stuff and viruses rarely develop resistance to vaccines

    >Implying we ever had a HIV vaccine for HIV to become immune to.
HIV is a special case because the method we use for vaccines doesn't work due to the nature of HIV (vaccines are inert viruses that inoculate your system to the disease. However, HIV attacks that inoculation system, which means an HIV vaccine would just give you HIV).
Go take a biology 101 course you idiot.

I like bacon but this is completely inexcusable.

Cost is not really an issue here as.22LR ammo is just a few cents a round.
Heck you can buy .40s which would definitely kill a pig for 9 cents a round.
As for burying them well that will likely preserve the virus.

True there's also a pneumatic bolt gun that pretty much shatters their skull causing instant death.
In the west it's perceived causing the animal undue suffering before death will ruin the quality of the meat.
Too much adrenalin the animal will go into rigor mortis very quickly which would make processing difficult.
I'm not sure if either device is used in Korea.

This is perfectly 'humane'. History has shown time and again that it is human nature to suffer by our own hand. We've butchered, tortured, maimed, gassed, burned, incinerated, blown up, mutilated, suffocated, poisoned, dismembered, starved, buried-alive, shot, bludgeoned, fed to animals, burned some more, impaled, tore to peices, skinned alive, etc, etc, etc [insert horrific ways to die] countless millions of people throughout the bloody footprints we call "history".

And humanity will continue to strive to be "humane" for the foreseeable future. Makes you all warm and tingly inside to know you belong to such a depraved species eh?

You Know...as a Human Being, I thought it was important to watch this. I can now saw that I have seen 100 pigs climb over each other and die in a pack screaming. I think it's made me "stronger".

The smarter thing would've been to poison their water or drug them to death so they'd die quietly OR even gas them. The could've led them 1 by 1 to get wacked with an Ax then dumped in the pit - would've been less cruel but #1 they are not My Pigs and #2 every dead pig is profit lost so...I'm sure they really rather KEEP the pigs for their intended use.

The Funny thing? - I spent all day eating Turkey Bacon since 4 PM...cause my job had employee Breakfast that lasted all day.

hitler was a chump compared to the kind of damage Stalin and Mao did. Too many people seem to forget them.
A quick google indicates 11 million to 17 million people died during the holocaust. Mao killed some 49-78 million people, and stalin somewhere in the area of 23 million if you count the famines in Ukraine.

    Hitler & Stalin - 0
    Mao - 1
But then you got to give Hitler credit for being a Class A(sshole) Troll to the Jews. His name will never be forgotten for the sheer amount of horror and general idiocy (attacking Russia, murdering millions of people and pissing of the world, etc) the Nazi party displayed.

FMD is a very highly contagious disease. These farmers have very limited amount of time to react and resource to act accordingly.

They are already losing tons of money because of wide spread infections, they also have to put them down which would cost them additional money.

Are these people burring pigs because they are evil and do not care for animals? Unlikely, but it all comes down to financial crisis they are in. They are too busy wiping their ass than feeling sorry for these domestic animals and you can't really blame them. You can't really say people who are criticizing are naive and wrong either, it comes down to making choices and these farmers are making a choice based on their priorities.

One clear problem with this is that, burying pigs underground is already causing environmental problem right now due to raining and flood warning. Water source is contaminated to the point they can't even use it for industrial purpose. Humane or not they should've burned them all.

Umm, actually there are always better options than this. We wouldn't do this to humans and the fact is not only do they think the lives of pigs are worthless, they think that the abhorrent treatment of animals, killing them in possibly the worst way imaginable, is okay if it suits their back pocket.

These people are what informed and compassionate people would consider evil.

Don't forget that pigs are highly intelligent which would make the trauma that much worse.

Bad economy tends to punish the weak and the animals alike sadly enough.

That's why so many Chinese animal slaughter is so brutal since they don't use any fancy gadgets to quick-kill. They often skin animals while they're alive. Even in poor parts of Europe, America, everywhere in the world they do this.

One thing for certain. If you 100% object to animal cruelty, then simply do not support meat products, at least from dubious sources (unfortunately, customers just aren't able to be informed easily on that topic. Food Inc is a dreary and sobering reminder that the industry is kind of fighting against the public with unveiling the awful truth about our foods).

Secondly, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES BUY FUR. Almost every fur nowadays comes from poor nations using live-animal skinning practices. Bad economy really is not helping those animals on top. If cheapskates don't want to be humane and want to save a few bucks, they will.

I really wish we live in some Star Trek kind of world where the computer atomizes meat out of thin air instead of us having to kill. XD
