As part of their “Mind the Valentine’s Day Trap” campaign, Malaysian police have arrested scores of people for the crime of being in the same room together without being married; they face up to a 2 year prison sentence if convicted.
Police report making 80 arrests for the Sharia crime of “khalwat” (being together with an unmarried non-relative of the opposite sex) in the state of Selangor alone, with more in other states and the capital as well.
Those arrested were mostly frequenting hotels and public parks; if convicted they face up to 2 years in prison.
The government-run campaign is based on a 2005 fatwa which identifies Valentine’s Day as a depraved infidel tradition which only serves to tempt young people into the evils of premarital sex.
Critics maintain such arrests only serve to damage Malaysia’s supposedly unwarranted image of not being a crazy Islamic state where young girls are stoned to death for being raped.
None of those things such as stoning raped girls and allowing underage marriage are part of the syaria legal system actually. I think they either come from some made up allegations or those who implement the system are mad. Truly, islamic law by theory is not bad at all. Pre marriage sex is illegal in order for people to control sex related disease. If ur married legally you would have known the precautions of sex. Also, sex is not practically love unless u know how to control it – Love comes in so many ways. Many couples broke up over sex out of outrageous lust and curiosity. Since Islam is the religion of peace and love, it is evident that from this law that Islam encourage practitioners to offer unlimited love by not doing pre marriage sex.
only Malays got caught i guess, with those ‘tudungs’ aka those cloth that covers their head. Malaysian-Chinese doesn’t seem to have any problem dating in Malaysia as i am a Malaysian-Chinese…
