Gantz fans are aghast at the recently screened Gantz live action movie, which is said to have dumped all the ero and guro elements which underpinned the original in favour of handsome male leads in shiny suits for the ladies.
Critics pitch in with a suitably scathing review:
Gantz – 45%
The author of Gantz may be a big fan of Hollywood, but as usual for a Japanese film, the live action version is awful. There is still some hope for it however.
[...]
The movie version differs from the original in both story and setting.
Firstly, all the ero and guro, the twin pillars of the original work, have been ruined. This is atrocious.
This is not teatime TV, that sort of thing might have to be removed from a TV drama but not from something everyone is fully expecting (and paying to see). What’s up with this lukewarm pap?
However desperate you are to attract a female audience, arranging the whole film to appeal to women is misguided. It’s like they are fitting the film to the audience because they don’t have the guts to try to make the audience fit the film.
[...]
For example, take the actress portraying the heroine Kei, Natsuna.[Details (sexy pictures) here and here]
She is said to have prepared for the famous scene where she is transported into the Gantz room by not wearing any underwear for days before the filming.
The scene was filmed and she did it nude, but the final scene didn’t show a single nipple or any pubic hair.
This kind of unnatural alteration, as if were being shown on prime-time TV, will only aggravate Gantz fans the world over.
Of course, you must understand I’m saying this on behalf of fans and not just because I want to see her lovely rack or anything like that.
Just when it seemed Hollywood could not be outdone, Japan’s own film industry has finally beaten them at their own game.

gantz without ero and guro plus added pretty boy?
are they going to release it at 1st april ?
cuz that isn't funny
either way I'm waiting on the news about the K-ON and Strike Witches movies
Will consist of 55% less Music and Ecchi (respectively). Thus falling directly in line with expectations following this Gantz movie.
If you take out 55% of music from K-on, you have -15% of music.
Exactly.
So... anyone would like to watch this another disappointing, gosh-awful, film adaptation?
You made it sound like we considered it
I'll stick to the manga, tnx.
not that I planed to watch it anyway
Judging by the article and the buch of screaming fangirls at the post screening interview of the actors I'm sure they'll show up in droves to see this and the sequel in aprilish.
i knew this movie was going to be shit
Who is this critic though? Doesn't sound like a pro movie reviewer at all, just a 2channer >.>;
This is Meh
No tits, no gore - why would I watch then?
So... it's kinda like the anime version then?
i c wut you did thar.
So what... Japanese M-Bayed?
That "critic" sounds more like a 13 year old pervert. But that aside changing the basic setting and story so much is damaging at best but prob done to save money.
hopefully more boobies on the next movie :P
I saw the movie in theaters and I enjoyed it, aside from the bad dubbing (which was quite humorous). While Gantz is a T&A and guro filled manga, that is not the sole defining element in Gantz. If this was the case, well then Gantz would be really bad no different from something like Queens Blade.
Yes, it deters a bit from the original story line. That shit will always happen in movie adaption's from print material (Books, comics, manga, etc). Don't be so alarmed. What matters is if the changes make the film work better as a live-action. In the case of Gantz, yea, I think it does. I would be skeptical as to the quality of the movie if it followed the manga 100% and I doubt they would even give it a proper ending after just 2 or 3 movie installments following the manga exactly. Try not to compare it too much to the manga, and it's a decent movie.
And let it be known though, I was just as sad to see the absence of Kei banging the Lara Croft Clone chick in the hallway as much as anyone else.
No boobies No movies
better than dragging ballz emo (dragonball evo)
Now let's hear it from Rotten Tomatoes. I bet they're gonna give it around 25% fresh rating.
no boobs n o want ._.!!
I watched Ichi the killer a long time ago and thought that's what it would be like. then I read this.
just watched the teaser... i didnt see any aliens. I mean the main reason i read gantz is because of the awesome fighting actions against the aliens each game they go on. Well i expected this movie would be fail anyway.
I saw the movie at the world premiere.
I liked it. The level of gore, maybe not as graphic as the manga, was still decent. Lot's of blood and exploding parts.
Also, it's a little unfair to expect the same amount of nudity in a live action film.
And Natsuna was gorgeous. A fair amount of service for the guys. This is also her first movie. Can't people be satisfied with the nude scene they got?
My words of wisdom. Always expect these kinds of things to be disappointing that way your less likely to actually get dissappointed. LOL also seems we got some necros in SC that don't like me lol I jk... it better be a jk and not true. in b4 drivel.
I saw it on opening night with 3 friends. We and everyone else left the theater rather happy with it. I didn't hear any complaints. There was a bit of creative license taken sure, bit it was still rather good.
I only followed this series because of Kishimito's tits and pussy. so i understand how outraged they feel. if i was into the above i would read either Naruto or One Piece instead.
Well if the movie at very least have asian actors i think that will be enough to consider it as a blockbuster compared to the previous failures.
wtf!? Gantz without boobs? That must be a joke! Gantz without boobs are no Gantz...
The movie was entertaining. I don't mind that the nude scenes weren't in it, but then, I'm not desperate.
this movie played at a theater where i live. it was terrible. it was so dark that nobody could see anything. it was like i was watching a recording of a recording. they showed the trailer for the second one at the end which seemed like it would be a thousand times better but the trailer for this one was like that too so I expect FAIL again.
It can't be as bad as the Dragonball movie can it ?
Not surprising. Is there ever a good manga based movie? Even the anime didn't measure up to manga.
Maybe Ishihara's behind of this.
The movie is plenty violent. Blood exploding everywhere and the like.
Not as much as the manga, sure, but few things beat out the manga.
As for the ero part, if you were honestly expecting that in a Japanese film released to theaters, you're fucking retarded. You'll only get that type of nudity in Miike films/Z movies that either get super limited runs or just go straight to DVD.
It's not an amazing film, but it's certainly not bad and I'd say it's one of the better adaptations of an anime thus far.
LMAO, You guys do realize Japanese live action movies have been sucking for years? Both China and the west has Japan beat.
And i thought it could be a better than a Hollywood adaptation..
I am sure they will put the deleted nude scenes back in the director's cut edition of the Blu-ray release for a premium price. It's a trend, you know.
"The scene was filmed and she did it nude, but the final scene didn’t show a single nipple or any pubic hair."
Therefore it' not a nude scene right?
Mmmm.. Pretty boys... Okay, I got nothing more to add.
WHAT?! NO BOOBIES?! (屮゚Д゚屮)
(ノಥ益ಥ)ノ ┻━┻
It's the same as making a family friendly "Saw" for kids.
I was able to see a screening of it too. Its not Gantz that was in the manga or anime. The story as been stripped of its soul and meaning - glossy rubbish remains. I don't think any Gantz fans will like the film version. Score: Fail.
I liked it. The suits and other equipment worked like they were supposed to, and most of the aliens were there.
I've certainly seen worse adaptations.
"but the final scene didn’t show a single nipple or any pubic hair"
Damn can't i get a peep just a peep.
'Tis a dark day indeed...
what more do you expect from a movie that is made in Japan with all their censor laws and mentality of prude. Shouldn't have expected anything in first place.
i am seriously saddened... some heads need to roll for this, first Gantz anime is ended like it did... now they do THIS?
a horribly dak day indeed

I'd be a mahou shoujo just for the chance at being mahou shoujo. Her nudity is a bonus.
What if you get your head bitten off? Is it worth it?
Who here is willing to become a mahou shoujo in exchange to see her nude?
Kyubey, if I want see her naked what kind of power I'll get?
I saw it at a special screening here in the U.S. and I can validate that their opinions are correct. Not only that, but the fangirl/fanboy ratio was horribly off. When I first walked in the theater and saw an overwhelming presence of girls I thought "...but this is gantz....why is the girl/guy ratio so OFF". Well, after seeing that the only "special guests" for the simulcast were just the two male protagonists, I knew what I was in for, and who the movie was aimed at.
All in all though, the movie wasn't too bad. I still got to see Natsuna run around in a skin tight suit, and a bit of bloody violence. But they subtracted tomb raider (and the sex scene she participated in).
For every pro, 2 cons. Ah well...
Japan's movies are always pretty god damn bad.. Is it a shock to anyone? Even movies that are so critically acclaimed like "Audition" and the like are so laughable and corny that it's almost sad..
ok... nudity i can understand, but if they censor the gore too, then wtf is this shit?!
Its just a 3D oppai so what there's many that on the net Why bother although it can ruin the Gantz fans expecting that scene.
I, unfortunately, had the misfortune of watching it. Not only were the boys "pretty", they spent quite the time smiling at each other. And Katou's brother looked pretty androgynous which hinted some trap shota themes.
wow wow wow what the..... I was looking forward to this....... that god I read your comment.
*removes Gantz the movie from watching list*
*thank god...
somehow I cant edit my comment. =.=
Pretty boys aside (and naked women for the men) I always liked Gantz for its story and action. While I was kinda disappointed they cut off a lot of the guro, I certainly didn't miss it and it wasn't the reason I watched/read it anyways.
The movie could've been a lot worse if we take into account the atrocities manga/anime titles usually undergo through the live-action adaptation process. The story, while having its inevitable changes, remains in essence the same, at least for the first movie.
TL;DR: I really, really liked the movie. (inb4 getting downvoted)
