this is something i can personally attest to, so do not disagree if you simply do not know -_-
I'm not entirely sure if they're actually proud of themselves. The pictures they take (and the willingness to post them publicly) seems more of a cry for help. The end of the year can force lonley otaku to reflect back on the last 12 months with sometimes disappointing revelations. They feel that their appreciation of their waifus is really all they have to keep themselves together. The sad part is, some of these people probably never had a real heart-felt hug from anyone in years.
Having said that, I don't know whether to feel sad for them, or creeped out.

Not quite... many people, such as otaku - are shy and/or afraid to talk to real girls... or at least something beyond "friend", notice in many Anime/Manga the guy/hero is afraid of sex and girls?
Very rarely is such people are attractive to women. Now, going after shy girls, is more successful since the girl is happy that a guy in interested in them.
With Anime being much more main-stream in the USA, there are more girls available to Otakus.
