Statistics published by top game developer Tose show that with 42 million the total number of PS3s sold globally have exceeded the Xbox 360 by a million units.
The statistics coe by way of a presentation by Tose (a prolific Kyoto-based game developer best known for not being known, as their games as usually credited exclusively to the company outsourcing the work to them, most often Nintendo) at the Kyoto Cross Media Experience 2010, published by Famitsu.

Update: Tose is apologising, saying it made an “error” in its figures for Xbox 360 sales, undercounting sales by 3 million units (and hence having erroneously implied the Xbox 360 was in the lead), having probably not realised its slide would become the subject of innumerable articles keen to point out the supposed change in leadership.

So, they're ALMOST at Super Nintendo levels...
LOL~
SN FTW mother fuqers!
And Wii beat all 3! XD
nope
PS + PS 2 beat Wii :p
IN JAPAN. PERIOD. In the rest of the world...
In the rest of the world (not the fantasy land that you're in right now), the PS3 outsold the 360.
Er.. No?
I'll quote something right back at you.
"The statistics used in this article are wrong"
Did you even read the damn article? Here, I'll quote the relevant part just for you.
"with 42 million the total number of PS3s sold globally have exceeded the Xbox 360 by a million units."
Here, I'll quote it for you because you and a few others seem to have difficulty in reading.
"with 42 million the total number of PS3s sold globally have exceeded the Xbox 360 by a million units."
Ps2 No1 bitches and im part of it :D
PONG is win
Why is the Megadrive below the N64, when it has a bigger number?
"N64: 33,000,000
Megadrive: 34,000,000"
Well, its about time PS3 outside Xbox 360...
but after seeing the stats, i wonder if there is any new generation console that could surpass PS2....
considering PS2 still have demand and new games still being released..
And nobody thought it would happen otherwise, not even Microsoft with their over-hyped bullshitting.
needs more console yuri
maybe they'll use that extra money to improve PSN
Ps2 rape them all by millions :3
PS2 best console ever, I still find myself playing on it :D
Lets see, what do I still own?
I still have:
PS1- slowly gathering dust
PS2- Currently playing KH 2
PS3- Need new games :/
X360- Never play on it though :/
N64- Don't have many games for it :/
Thats it :D
cheap bluray, most of my non-gaming friends have one just for the bluray.
and my fren hav 4 ps3
1 for internet
1 for movies
1 for jailbreak
1 for original games
such a damn sony fan
in reality, does it really matter? i mean the Wii is still outselling the 360 and ps3 by a huge margin. All systems have their own merits. Personally though I would rather go PC than any console.
Wii out sold/sell because its cheap as hell and got all the classic cute/kid games that all kids like + the girl/women. Well it was a pretty new concept when it was released too.
Thank god, now those Xbox owners can't be so smug about "how much better the 360 is" and all that false crap.
Turns out people have opinions.
It is better and those numbers are wrong.
All hail the Playstation 2!
Shadow of the Colossus is just one of many reasons why it's number one.
I have both consoles and i've got to say it's well deserved. Out of all the consoles i've every owned, the XBOX 360 is probably the most volatile. Hardware-wise. Micro$oft is simply unwilling to properly fix their hardware and they merely offer a slap-dash fix, should something break.
Also, out of all the games i own for that system, only a handful remain exclusive. All the others got a cross platform release.
I own both consoles as well(and a Wii too i geuss) and both of them have broken in the past. Most of it is down to taste anyway i buy a console for its games not to see how many breakes down after all.
That said my 360 collection is substantially larger then my ps3 one so i suppose i prefer the games on that one. Both platforms have exclusives that are well worth the effort, i dont think any real gamer should dismiss that unless those games happen to fall outside of his gaming tastes. Its probebly the sole reason i own both platforms despite many releases being multiplatform nowadays.
Altough ill still buy anything for pc over anything on the consoles in case of a multiplatform game.
If the console can play games...We should all quit about saying which is better and at the end of the day, they both do the same things. And that's letting people have fun.
good for sony! now time to come up with more AAA games.
Sony has a lot more AAA exclusives than the 360 ... 360 has gears halo and ....... yea thats it.
forgot to sign in... <.<
nice :D
though i read it was false. it will come sooner or later ^^
I'm kinda surprised that PS1 sold double the SNES, considering how iconic some of those SNES games are.
Sankaku at least tells you exactly what it's sources are, unlike many news outlets.
I also detected a tone of scepticism about the figures throughout the article; it seemed to be more along the lines of "x said y (but take it with a pinch of salt)" than "y is true". Of course, if you're a fanboy, you'll always interpret articles like this as some kind of biased attack.
PS. I find it amusing that you quote vgchartz as if they were infallible.
VGChartz has always been considered one of the definitive sites for tracking sales numbers. There is another, thou I don't remember the site offhand. Not much point in remembering it when their figures are usually within reason of one another.
Next, why would an anonymous 3rd party developer be more accurate? What exactly does a 3rd party software developer have to do with sales tracking? Unless you can come up with a viable explanation that one, the answer is jacksh1t. All they did was quote a developer, who in turn quoted something a sales rep privately claimed and it turned into an article. Guarantee that's how it went down. Real A+ journalism.
And it's linked to Famitsu, one of the shadiest magazines still published. All you have to do is look at how many perfect 10s they've given in recent years and the rest is self explanatory. Nintendogs got perfect 10s. Yeah, I'm going to trust that magazine. *laughs*
Question: Did SNES games cost way over 100 dollars/euros everywhere when it came out? I remember in Finland they cost like 700 marks (116 euros) back then and I was thinking that how could anyone buy those.
they could run anywhere from 60-100$ us, the carts themselves were the most significant part of the cost of production, them eeproms werent cheap.
I'm not a big enough nerd to get involved in video game arguments, but I can say that these numbers do not correspond with the quarterly reports to investors.
Yes that data looks totally trust worthy. O_o
According to PS3mmgn the 360 had already sold more that they list back in July of this year.
http://ps3.mmgn.com/News/38-million-PS3s-sold-worldwide
What this says: If you sell a product with advertised features X, Y and Z and then later take away those features, your customers will love you for it.
Gamer Stockholm syndrome?
About time.
41 million 360's sold lol they should cut that number in half since most people had to buy 1 or 2 new ones.
This is getting boring.
Anyone with a brain sends it in to be repaired free of charge; very few people have had a serious fault outside of the warranty.
120 mill for ps2? yeahhhh ok
You're absolutely right, they're totally wrong about PS2 sales figures. It closer to 150 million.

I notice that there is no listing for Atari Jaguar sales.
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!
