A Japanese watcher sees the characters as Japanese. A European as European. An American as American.

As long as there are no distinct features telling you something else (like black skin if you’re white) it’s human nature to think a drawn human is the same as you.

The same can be said about all dominant features, that’s why we see faces in objects that clearly are no faces. 2 points and 2 lines in a certain arrangement are enough. Like this ;-)
