A Hong Kong event seeking to promote Kinect with the aid of some comely maidens has turned into a nightmare for Microsoft, with the revolutionary controller seemingly unable to reliably recognise even scantily clad Asian belles…
On reflection it seems almost inevitable that a first-generation motion recognition controller would fail embarrassingly whenever exhibited or handled by a Microsoft executive – little wonder Microsoft kept the device hidden away even during its launch event.

I wonder, despite how cheap to make in the sweatshop in China and however much they'll turn around and charge people for, what tiny critical parts they kept out that would make it work perfectly?
-?Memory for the programs in the hardware?
-?Maybe a 3rd or 4th IR tracking camera?
Whatever.
See, back in the 90s I really liked "VR" and everyone else did too. Problem was, da computers were simply not powerful enough. Without spending $100K and programming it yourself.
Now we got the computing power for VR but the hardware is behind.
The least you need for that level of VR input is a setup of dot transmitters and sensor array that isn't just in front, but AROUND you. It sounds complex, but it's not, just imagine a "Dot" for shoulder, hands, parts of the torso, etc. I'd bet if this abominations data was graphically represented they'd look like blurry cones that flipped on and off enough to do a "Pokemon Seizure" on anyone, seemingly the poor machine trying to read it.
It's nothing people who know what they are doing can't build themselves, but obviously something the big companies would scream bloody murder mass-producing. They want everything dirt cheap sweatshop made so they can charge JUST UNDER what a non 3rd world slavery outfit would charge. They want HUGE price markups.
Hmm...
Maybe in a year or so I will build the "Roller ball" VR input controller. From an earlier discussion on what I'd like in a game when somebody said I'd want a "Rape Rape Revolution" game...right.
Seriously, human sized roller ball - think "Buckminster Fuller" so it can be constructed in smaller modules and put together with ease.
Then it rests on a series of wheels, and when you move inside of it the direction and speed is tracked and turned into computer data. Like a "Trackball"
Inside there's a simple transmitter harness for those "Dot Points". And a VR helmet. Fortunately they do make VR glasses with built in head tracking. That'd be the most expensive part (for someone like me who can build the rest of it) around $1K.
And of course a modified Wii sword or maybe just a cool toy plastic one rigged with dot transmitters;-)
Then I'd connect it as a controller/input device to a DIY game construction kit so I could make a virtual "Barbarian" world and run around hacking up "Imaginary Picts" and such;-)
Something I'd like to make. Too many hobbies right now as it is...

Join my group, join MANarchy!!!
There's no "cheaply made" when it comes to camera's. As the sensors are the most expensive part, the rest is cheap shit. The sensors have to be fabricated in special plants which companies all over the world must use also. The price is the same for everyone. And it cost's quite a bit for that many sensors. The price is well justified.
The fact is they seem to suck syphilitic pimply donkey dick in reading motion... And the suckage of diseased zoophiliac spew is such that I wonder if perhaps they even WANT to ruin "VR" again since Microsoft tries to keep out of hardware and into their own crash-prone software?
If VR comes back, it'll come back BIG.
Our computer technology now enables "Virtual Worlds" that can almost be casually built. Also with the small color screens that are dirt cheap and ease of transfer of information, all sorts of cheap peripherals can be built.
This could cause a "Power Shift" since there IS "Linux" lots of people could make mini-computers that run with a "VR interface" and simply work so well there's no need for windows.
So, perhaps they are trying to kill VR by making a "Virtual Boy" aka "My Eyes, they BLEED!!!" out of devices like this....?
My suggestion for a VR setup is (minimum) 4 IR cameras, ideally 6 in a square/circle around the reading area combined with a 'harness' that's a kind of "RL IK skeleton" of fabric and velcro that a person puts on to transmit the body/angle positions.
What I'd do with my project -if I do it- is make them transmitting bumps so they can relay actual "Spatial" distance to sensors. The reason for that would be I'd be in a ball that I'd design to be transparent to radio waves but it'd obscure a crude camera, I don't have the setup for a huge PVC one which it'd distort IR anyways.
Uhhh... As fun as it would be to hate on Kinect here, you DO realize that's anything but a real world application, right? Who plays video games in front of a rapid-fire random strobe light? Of course it got screwed up there.
CAMERAfail! Who gives a crap about the chicks? I wanted to see more of the screen-fail that was going on
That's just embarrassing.
Cantonese are smart enough to figure this out.
... no words for it
Or here's an idea.. Maybe it's because of the fucking ridiculous amount of camera flashing going on. Normal changing in lighting Natal can handle, but over 10 high powered camera flashes a second is sure to fuck with it. If these horny asian's could just put away their camera's for a second it probably would have worked. Or invest in a damn video camera.
Jessica C. ? Oh those controversial HK models again... they sure like to bask in the negative spotlight.
you guys are a bunch of lamers
the bitches are too close to each other, that's why kinect cant recognise them
the game CLEARLY says to one bitch to MOVE a little to the left in order to recognise her body ... but she doesnt understand and continue to giggle like a schoolgirl
YOU RRoD 360 BETA TESTERS FAGS SURE GOT TOLD.
YEAH. NOW I KNOW NOT TO PLAY KINECT AT A DISCO.
And... that's all. Not quite sure how that's "got told" really.
why would i wanna get up from my couch to run in my living room? epic phail microsoft
Failnect’s
ITT butthurt and flaming.
Also am I the only one who noticed that those models had absolutely no rhythm in the second video?
Look like two ugly skanks pick up from a back alley, or a couple of Thai transvestites. What kind of ghetto ass event was this?
sigh. They have yet to learn their lesson yet. sigh. The boss might have good idea, but if the idea doesn't work and the fellow engineers and worker force to do it, then it's gonna be shit work produced.
Flash photography probably destroyed it's ability to sense people.
Which does seem to be the reason why it failed to respond to the movements.
Flash Bulb also blinds a camera as well.
Er, I don't know about you guys, but I was there, and while I didn't see the scenes in the video, during the parts that I watched (the booth was right on the main lane, so you past by it quite often if you're moving around, unless you're actively avoiding it for the Lady Gaga music), the players/guests who played did a pretty good job, and the device looked like it was actually pretty effective at capturing people; kids, adults, scantily dressed women, etc. All were captured pretty well; not sure if you can tell in the videos, but there's this tiny display on screen that shows how the camera is capturing you playing. As long as you match yourself well to the instructed movements, Kinect responds to it pretty well. The system requires rather obtuse degree of control, though; the dances need to match up pretty well, and the running and jumping need pretty much no precision at all; so not sure what I would say about that. But overall, rather than being disappointed, I was actually surprised by how well it worked.
I really don't understand why there's so much hate.
"Someone might potentially like this? They must be downvoted!"
If you don't like it, don't buy it. It's probably not for you anyway. But voting down someone's comment just because they liked it is kinda stupid, even from a SanCom view.
NOTE: This post has nothing to do with what the above poster said, merely at people's reaction to it.
LoL, stick with the Wii.
what makes it even worse is that it is not a first gen motion control system. Everybody remember the eyetoy on the PS2, microsoft has had 6ish years to make it better and they still fail.
Lol, I will still buy it if Microsoft includes two beautiful asian girls like that in each Kinect Pack!
Ah ah!
I'm amazed, is that the new blue screen of dead? Well at least it's a lot better than the windows version... Ah ah!
^_^
This is product suicide.
Microsoft, when will you learn to wake the fu<k up and test your equipment thoroughly before stuff like this happens. How do you expect any customer confidence?
Geeeeze...
O lawdy are those girls from Beautyleg? Or Moko?
I watched a demonstration online showing it work just fine. The problem here is the H_A_I_L of camera flashes going off. I can understand maybe fanboys not wanting to admit it. *shrug*
The reason is Asian girls run like retards.
Vid 1:
Yeah! *high 5* We suck!
Vid 2:
OMG, get off the stage. You have no rhythm. Stop embarrassing yourselves.
I don't know why but I find every Kinect demo painful to watch.
wow come on microsoft at least test your products first before even showing it to the public. epic fail
what presentation?
all i saw was 2 super hot girls moving about, yumm
i'd still buy it. looks WAY more fun then the wii version of DDR
Just like everyone else has said, its the fuckin barage of lights from the horny asians who have more of an interest in the girls than the tech. Plus the girls also are to blame for not even putting in an effort, they look even more rediculous not giving an effort for a product they are supposed to be trying to sell.
But you can put some of the blame on microsoft as well.
A. they should have warned the photographers not to take any pictures and to only video record
B. they should have had the girls practice with it before hand instead of having them wing it in front of a crowd of perverted photographers who are only interested in getting pictures of their asses or at least hire some girls who wouldnt get all nervous or better yet hire guys cause none of them would take pictures of some dudes
C. they should have had someone monitor the event because i read about this on a not so biased site and it turns out that they had just left the girls there to demonstrate with no one there to make sure everything went right (and dont say this site isnt biased because most of the articles in here about the 360 are negative and more than half of the articles about the ps3 are positive, not that i use this site for video game news anyways unless its about a japan only game of course)
I still dont plan on getting a kinect anytime soon until i see some good non shovel ware games for it, plus im still saving up for a ps3 to replace the ps3 i broke xD. Rant over.
like communism it looks good on paper but fails in reality.
they failed because they weren't naked.....
Product needs renaming to something like.. DisKINECT since it's full of such obvious first gen fail.
Maybe they should have actually lifted their legs up. Gawdamn they're lazy.
I'm not a Microsoft fanboy, but I have to agree, the flashes seem to be the problem here...
You idiots do understand that strobing flashes interfere with the kinects ability to detect motion don't you? Take a look at all the photographers going nuts.
Dang. Just when I left HK, they organize something like this? I wanted to see that, and it's not for the Kinect.
microsoft is so stupid no wonder they choose kinect over natal but in the end it is fatal
They are not doing it right for the running, the flashes are screwing up the camera and they are too close together
Yes, no flashes, no standing close together, have a 10m diameter circle of free space around you, wear no clothes.
Only then will Kinect work. Sounds like a good piece of hardware indeed and it's not Microsoft's fault that they couldn't foresee the problem with camera flashes! Of course reporters would never try to take photos of the event, why would they...
It's designed my Americans for Americans, so of course it won't recognise those tiny skinny Chinese women... given them a few big mac meals to plump them up a bit and I'm sure it'd work fine.
I don't care too much for it but in defense of it, it helps if they got people that could properly run.
Biggest fail ever.
What the next excuse coming up?
So far , we have the sitting down excuse, the "you can't wear a skirt" excuse"
I don't mine the "no skirts" excuse.
Maybe the Kinect has a built in AI that doesn't like asians? No, wait, scratch that. It has failed with other people. Kinect is just misanthropic.
Maybe their breasts are too big. I guess Kinect works only with DFC.
Maybe it's a case of third player interruption. Try viewing the photographs taken during this event again, chances a ghastly wisps in a form of the human silhoutte was standing between them..
