I think if the man with the SLR camera still loves Gundam in his middle ages this just shows how influential the franchise actually is. Also what evidence do they have to say he's alone did they stop and ask him. Gundam is over 30 years old and has created over a dozen different series. Evagelion is just a 26 episode TV series in which they have repeated the same story like 3 times now with exactly the same story. At least with Gundam they had the common decency to make it different not platently repeat the same show over and over again.

Like any kind of media, music, movies, video games, television shows it is subjective to one's personal PERCEPTION.
So if one thinks Eva is not deep and the other believes so, it is inarguable because Eva is subjective to one's perception.
Personally, from my perception, I believe Eva CAN be a very deep show especially for those who have been through tough/hard experiences.
Once again, from my perspective, it was extremely psychological and freaking played/released with emotions I thought I never had or had only kept to myself/locked away. A life changer for me.

As for the comparison of the fans all that proves is Gundam is an older series and has older fans.
BTW a camera phone even a Nokia or Driod is a very poor substitute for a good DSLR.

The sensors on the MER rovers are only 1MP yet take better pictures then any phone I seen.
My Nexus One takes better photos than my recent Digital Compact Camera. Pretty impressive really... you should check out the new smartphones.
They have improved greatly my N82 takes pretty good pics in day light.
Though it does fall flat in low light.
But a great camera will always be too large to put a in a reasonably compact phone.
It's because of the laws of physics as to get a great picture you have have lenses and sensors large enough catch enough photons to get the detail.
When talking sensors size does matter a 1/2" sensor will outperform a 1/3" sensor of otherwise equal specs.

How can one say eva isn't deep? Clearly that person lacks any of the required knowledge and experience that would show it is quite deep.
I guess having cultural analysts, psychologists, and myriads of professors around the world writing lengthy essays on the merits of Evas depth has no meaning to you all. I guess a doctor with dozens of years of education and training is wrong when he says Eva is a profoundly deep piece of work.
Do any of you read academic work, classic literature, literary and cultural criticisms? Hasn't anyone seen the Mechademia papers published by Univ of Minnesota press, or Dr. Susan J Napier's writings, or how about Robot Ghosts and Wired Dreams. There is a fascinating paper about Eva and Lain in the book, not to mention many wonderful articles examining Japanese science fiction and anime. Try Hiroki Azuma's English site and read his piece titled "Anime or Something Like it" After that, realize your mind's aren't equipped to appreciate Eva and then watch some Bleach or Naruto, it won't cause you to think , so no worries.
Eva is the finest piece of animation to be created thus far. The only thing that comes even close to it is Ghost in the Shell, works by Satoshi Kon, and maybe Lain but that's being awful generous.

Gundam was an update to mecha anime back in the late 70's. Eva was an update in the early 90's. I dunno why they should be competing. They are part of anime history and to some of us, even our history.
There's enough of each one of us for mecha anime. I'd say we should enjoy it as much as possible.

The only reason Eva is "Deep" is because the creator, Hideaki Anno, went through a nervous breakdown during the production, which is why the final episodes are so fucked up.
Oh, and the "Angels" are just Aliens, that's it. All the Kabbalah and Christian mysticism references are just there to throw you off. The Japanese treat Judeo-Christian dogma the same way the West treats Eastern religions or Greco/Roman mythology. They think it's interesting, even fascinating but they don't take it seriously at all.

It's funny how you think Serial Experiments Lain is a acid trip when all it was was a guide to internet security. All it dealt with was the difference between real life and internet life, which it made incredibly clear. It wasn't deep shizzle at all, it was just a way of telling you what you need to know about the internet through a story where everything is different yet similar. Exaggeration in other words, instead of showing you a chat they showed you them in a virtual world where they could talk to eachother.
NGE is basically (and repeats it a bazillion times) a show about how you need love, and how people love you no matter what you think and how you shouldn't just give up. All you need is love basically.
Then to sound deep (as the maker himself said) he made lots of obscure references to religion and shit and chose religious names just to make it sound deep without any deeper intention than that.
Basically NGE doesn't make sense because it doesn't have sense incorporated to it in the first place, it just tries to tell you about the importance of love.
Lots of people don't notice that anime is just an educational tool for children and teenagers (as well as soft soft core pornography) teaching them morales in life and give them lots of tips in how you should try to act in the real life, not just bind yourself to the rules.

The Gundam series is generally pretty damn good for what it is. Cowboy Bebop is considered by most people I've talked to a modern classic, Martian Successor Nadesico had a good message, Ghost in the Shell deals with the technological Singularity and even the nature of sentience itself, FLCL is a classic story of adolescence wrapped up in a shell of crazy, Princess Mononoke is just plain beautiful, and has a great story, I could go on but then this post would start getting obnoxiously long. Eva isn't a bad show. The fantards tend to be really pretentious about it though.
