Capcom and Namco have unveiled Street Fighter x Tekken, including spectacular gameplay scenes visible below, and have also announced Tekken x Street Fighter.

The announcement, already rumoured for some days, was made at Comic-Con as anticipated:

Fans seem to be delighted, although Tekken fans may be disappointed to see that both gameplay and character design are 100% Street Fighter 4 – fortunately they need not worry, as Namco is developing Tekken x Street Fighter as well, using the 3D fighting engine and graphical style of Tekken. Details of this have yet to be released.

Interesting - have two games that are (for the most part) exactly the same but play completely different at the same time. I guess ppl wondering how Tekken Characters handle in 2D would get the Capcom version or rent it at least and ppl wondering how the Street Fighter Characters handle in 3D would get the Namco version and some will get both. Ingenious really. Also i liked the little Megaman X Pacman at the end of the first video =D

Two franchises that are both pretty much on a love/hate relationship with the genre if not gamers as a whole... and by two well known Companies (perhaps even of which fall under "favorites", for some). At least they're doing it in an appealing way. Fans of one but not the other can turn towards the style of the franchise they prefer, so hopefully both versions will be multi-platform, as well (didn't see any direct mention of platform-release-anticipations and/or confirmations).

Well, the premise of one is Tekken characters in a Street Fighter game, and the premise of the other is Street Fighter characters in a Tekken game. Since both series' games play quite differently, I'd say there's more than just the 2D/3D difference.

    Tekken and VF wouldn't mix.

Thank god they went with Tekken and Street Fighter. Both are arcade button mashers, unlike technical Virtua Fighter. I would hate to see them simplify VF's engine more than they did in VF4Evo just so it's similar to Tekken's.

Not to mention, even though Tekken has lots more characters than VF, all of them have short movelists, just like in Street Fighter.
If they took out 70% of moves of every VF character just so the amount of moves per character is the same for every one, that would suck hard.

Yes, I do prefer the much more complex and demanding VF to one-dimensional, shallow Tekken.

Street Fighter characters with a 4 button control scheme!? Sounds stupid. The graphics engine differences I can get (though it's a question mark from a sales perspective), but control scheme differences on two completely different games is asking for problems.

Regardless it's good for Tekken fans, becuase the Street Fighter 4 engine look to be lacking when it comes to rendering nice looking female characters(Cammy being the major exception). I disappointed they didn't re-do Chun-Li's design considering she looks real good in Capcom VS Marvel 3.

I also wondering how the different control schemes of the two franchises are are going to be managed.

I'm assuming that Tekken characters(lacking fireballs)can dash under them.

There's a lot of reasons to be disappointed with the styles for these games.

It's an obvious attempt to shameless cash-in from both, and a desperate move on Namco's part, considering their current fortunes.

No change in the graphical style (unlike MvC3), gameplay looks to be extremely similar as well, no real innovation here.

It's just like adding characters to SFIV. Kinda disappointing.

Basically, they can't come up with new fighting games or improve them enough to expand their demographic so they're following the strategy of releasing as many crossovers or franchise fanservice as possible to net a few more sales from their niche fans, rehashing the same engines with different characters.
    Cool.
Its a very viable course but it will eventually get old.

They weren't joking when they said japanese developers had gotten stagnant and fighting games being an almost purely japanese genre is the one suffering the most.

lol and i guess western is being innovated this gen? give me a good game that isn't shooter? almost 70% of games being release by western developers are shooters. only few games like assassins's creed, little big planet and such.

at least the japanese are producing various genre "other" than fighting games, like you know rpgs, driving games, visual novels games, niche games, rhythm game the good ones(beatmania, ddr) not that shitty guitar hero's and shit. everyone is running out of ideas not just japanese.

on topic i think the game looks good yes they are rehashing the same engine at least they're doing it for their fans. would have loved to a new game from capcom or a revival instead. like onimusha 5 or new strider, chaos legion heck they even own the killer 7 IP(damn you capcom give it back to suda 51)

    Comment by Anonymous
    15:36 26/07/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

Its not about doing many random genres, its about improving the product by perfecting things or innovating.
Some western devs focus on shooters, others on rpg's and yet they still innovate. Racing games have diversified into many different sub styles like street, arcade, realistic.
Even the genres japanese devs had usually excelled are now being outperformed by western devs. The fighting game niche is just one of the worst cases along with RPG's because of how noticeable it is that only the same couple of old franchises are still left and they haven't improved at all instead its all about rehashing to keep the same players in.

That is a dead course that will lead to a crash.

    Comment by PrinceHeir
    03:03 27/07/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

hmmm i don't know. can you explain to me how they perfected the shooter and rpg genre? how do you even know they outperform the japanese in those categories? perfection can be differ from other people's perspective. to me it's not about perfecting but how fun and unique any genre can be.

for instance killer 7 is a perfect example of a great extraordinary shooter that you don't see nowadays, since almost every shooter we see is always aiming for realism. a dark story albeit confusing at first but you get to know more as you move on, gameplay is unique, you don't aimed at the head but at the weakspots of the enemy can either be at the back, leg, arms and so on. and that's the reason you keep playing it, are there any games like okami or shadow of the colossuss? Peace Walker also has one of the best gameplays ever. recruiting someone using a futon balloon? just pure genius.

im more to the unique aspect of a game, couldn't careless if they perfect any genre.

Shizzle gizzle goozen gaar! I like the idea of two different designs for the cross over, although I'll be sticking to the SF version.

Meh, it's not Capcom x Namco. So I wouldn't see Sophitia I guess...

I hope she's become a bonus character lol

Tekken has its infinite combos and Street fighter its special moves. I wonder how they will equilibrate it

Great tekken could use some improvements on camera mechanics ala SF4.

They did this kind of cross over before, just for fighting game. For PS2, Capcom X Namco was release, did not play it so not sure what it was about, but it seems to resemble some type of action RPG.

Both companies are running out of ideas as Tekken is running on its sixth game and Street Fighter has run longer but the story kept changing.

Please, Namco doesn't need Capcom's help considering Tekken is vastly way more popular in japan than SF unlike the states. If anything Capcom ASKED Namco for help.

Best thing of this was the Mega Man vs Pacman showdown at the end.
