The 1:1 monster RX-78-2 Gundam formerly menacing Tokyo has been re-erected in Shizuoka with upgraded armament. Below the animatronic statue can be seen in detail, as ever striking a particularly impressive figure against the night sky.
Its move to Shizuoka sees it occupy a central spot just to the north of Shizuoka Station, with the installation set to last from now until the conclusion of the Shizuoka Hobby Fair at the end of March, 2011, leaving plenty of time for pilgrimages.
The upgraded beam sabre glows at night and shimmers in the sun during the day, making for an impressive sight – otherwise the display is substantially the same.

Impressive really..
It's beautiful at night
i encourage the world to instead of building weapons of mass destruction
build gundams, and beat the crap of each other. it would be so cool, and the could even sell tickets to the vent!!!!!
As in... The Gundam Fight? :p GUNDAM FIGHT, REAAAAAAAAAAAAADY, GOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! XD
this is the reason japan will conquer the world. imagine if the US tries to fuck the japan they'll be making nukes while japan destroys them with their gundams it's over.
does it move?
ha! if it does... the world leaders would probably shat their pantz and the UN would start going "garble, garble, garble, blah, blah, blah" against it... and USA would be like "if we nuke japs before, we can do it again."
Why don't those dam japanese make a gundam they can pilot and taker over the world already o.o
xD
CooL
Wasn't there some talk that they're planning on building a 1:1 scale bust of EVA01 somewhere in japan? That it would be like you're standing on the bridge going across its chest while it's in the hangar.
They should have steam venting from the chest vents from time to time.
Last one.. megalol
They say a picture's worth a thousand words. I think this it only worth 5.
Gundam
Will
Fuck
You
Up
Imagine japan, build a army of gundams and attach speakers to play the theme song while there taking over the world. TRUE EPICNESS!!
hahaha.. You all Watch Too much Mech Anime..
that technology wont be available even in 2300
Your great great grandson will maybe!!?
5-10 year beam saber lol..
It just won't exist ever. A Human shaped weapon makes no sense : it makes a HUUUUGER target than a tank, can't be as armored as a tank, have too many structural weaks points (i.e. : joints), don't have the mobility of an airplane, etc etc.
I thought the robot at the Ghibli museum was menacing but this just takes the biscuit.
My fave pic is #11 because at first I thought he was pulling a toothy grin :)
Ten English pounds says that thing's battle ready.
I'd be smiling toothily if I had a sword the length of a small bus.
I ask for a Zaku!
Like I said before, I can't wait till I win my Canadian lottery, I'm gonna move to Japan and construct a 1:1 EVA Unit right beside this weakass midget mecha.
USA probably started mass producing ZAKUs before this gundam starts moving... and history will repeat itself
Hah USA funding on Zakus huh... USA will be making large bipedal tanks (Metal Gear)!
C'mon Japan, don't disappoint me, when will you build the 1:1 SDF-1 Macross. Possibly the post refit after Quamzin's suicide attack. The version with the ARMD Carriers.
Now we wait for an evil villain to attempt to take control over the gundam and make it his tool for destruction.
Great way to ruin a quiet town. Fucking nerds.
Can't wait for the real thing....
THAT IS THE REAL THING!!!!!!!
hmm...if a real life gundam is that big...i wonder how their real life Psycho Gundam ("IF" they're crazy enough to make one) would look like...
Because it has to be said:
GUNDAMMMUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!
Gay
Hehe, imagine the surprise of some ignorant sight-seer in Japan as he stumbles upon this Gundam.
The only thing from anime that will look awesome in real life is giant robot.
Let's test the reaction time of this brand new mobile suit...
I want to know the reaction of the the GUNDAM designer for the anime.
have they interviewed him yet? (if he is still around)
Um, the creator is happy with this, he was around for a wedding held at the original statue last summer where he gave the couple an autographed framed drawing of RX-78-2.
No phallic title reference?
what is gundam?
A miserable little pile of awesome. But enough talk, LETS GO TO SHIZUOKA!
A gun dropped in a dam.
What else?
u are both just plain retards XD
gundam is gay
You must be a crow.
Fuck you
gaydam?
while the public goes awe each part is being really being develop somewhere in japan and being put inside the gundam
It's a Conspiracy man...
They're not just for display...
It's Japanese's new WMD! (Weapon of Mass Destruction)
俺はガンダム!
That first pic is what nightmare-fuel is made of.
I knew it.
They'll add things little by little until they get to the point of adding mobility to the damn thing.
Then, they'll mass-produce it and make a university for teaching how to pilot a mobile suit.
Ecole du Ciel with delicious girl cadets???
geez. that gundam looks too plain! make a freedom/wing/destiny or somthing man!
@18:04 08/07/2010
im guessing he only watched the newer ones...
wait, with those things on freedom/wing/destiny's backs wouldn't it topple backwards? then they'd have to pose it leaning forward? man that's an ugly gundam.
Please die.
you die
only idiot dare to mock rx-78-2
North Korea don't stand a chance if they try to attack Japan.
nor china.
NK is already can't stand a chance if they start a war. But they don't care to take as many of their enemies down with them like China used to said that they doesn't care to sacrifice 300 mil (half their pop at that time) people with US.
Hmm...
Moving robots with beam sabres versus a tiny country with only a crazy dictator and a few handfuls of nuclear weapons...
I'm sorry. My money is still being placed on the country with moving robots.
Kind of hard to beat that, ya know.
my money is on country who owns newtype.
Sorry, this thing cannot move.
The moving robots are small robots who work in hospital.
Sometime in the (distant) future. When they start having "moving" robots, Korea is gonna have moving nuclear weapons too :D
I was referring to sometime in the (distant) future. But you get my point.
... The only thing that would be more epic is the next logical step...
Actual Gundams that can move and be piloted.
Japan would be one step closer to WORLD DOMINATION!!
nah. it takes too many money to build. and they probably have to build a nuclear reactor inside like freedom
and I will excitingly wait for my country to be invaded !!
*unconditional surrender* (as long as they let me touch it)
I heard somewhere that with today's technology it's possible to build a fully functional Gundam. The costs? Less than a modern NASA Space Shuttle.
Why nobody built one yet? Well, In real life a Gundam would be almost useless...
Our technology would only be sufficient for building one that can move around and do stuff, but not for one that would actually be effective in combat.
Just what kind of usefulness such a weapon would have in real life battlefields can only be guessed at. People say it'd be useless no matter how advanced the technology, and that this technology could be used to build more effective "conventional" machines (say, high-mobility tanks or some high-maneuver/VTOL aircraft). But they used to say this about tanks and aircrafts too back in the day...
All you need is a good, portable, very efficient power source. Then just versatility to the suit and you could be looking at a fully functional Knightmare Frame ...
in fact... something similar to "arms" could be useful in a tank-like vehicle... if you can change weapons at base (let's say... exchange missle launchers for machineguns when facing regular foot soldiers... and arms can aim more freely) it makes a prety versatile weapon
The human body and things (such as giant robots) aren't the most effective form to move or carry arms into combat.
So that's a good reason why chances of a giant robot making it to the battlefield at any time in the future are pretty small.. human sized robots (androids) capable of using the same tools as we use ourselves however.. I could see that work.
If there's one thing an army of actual gundams would be useful for, it would be intimidation, at the least.
When facing an army of huge robots (about 30 or so will do just fine) with beam sabres, most countries would quickly turn tail and run.
Their dependability in combat?
Well, that would depend on just how well equipped they are.
For example --
An enemy's first reaction, after all, would be to try to blow up aforementioned giant robots with craploads of rocket launchers and other types of explosives. As such, the obvious countermeasure to that would be to give the robots anti-missile systems and heavy fortifications to be able to withstand the blasts.
If you ask me, I'd say some gundams would be damn useful in a war. But, like i said, that would depend entirely on how well equipped they are.
Maybe I'm just too optimistic, though.
after you said that.. Gundam must learn one or two thing from metal gear.
Epic over 1 million! Now that's something!
They have a bloody awesome Gundam and all we have is a giant, middle-aged rusting lady on a pedestal...
*salutes the Gundam*
Brazil has a demi-god from a 2000 years-old legend.
The legend actually says he is really God.
Ours has fire~
Russia has a 60 m tall Mother Victory. When I was a kid I always fantacised about her and Liberty making out.
Be glad ... Belgium has a pissing kid
@Azure
Always remember rule 35.
Always.
And if you're really desperate, it doesnt hurt to draw it yourself...
*cough*
America has a woman (3d/real)
Nihon has giant robot (2d/fantasy)
i would say they accurately depict the interests of the contries as a whole.
america is the porn capital of the world.
Nihon is the anime/manga capital of the world.
*salutes Liberty AND RX-78-2
You're right...
...
...
...
Now if only someone would draw RX-t8-2 and the Statue of Liberty having sex...
*crosses fingers and silently says a perverse prayer to the Rule34 gods and goddesses*
But theirs has a Beam Saber...
Thats looks so Epic.
Wake up one morning.
It's.. it's..It's a gundam!!!
lol, so reminded of of an episode in gundam wing....or is that what you were aiming for?
<3
I know what you mean *-*
but the reaction should be O..O..OMG!! ITS DA GUNDAM!!11!1 *heart attack*
You're retard
h
... you totally missed the reference.
or is it @k?...
Dude,if the arms law was nonexistent there, they would have already made one.
@Tomoya-san:
Not really.

This is a surgical tool made for civillian use. Think of what a military could have in the future, if not today.
light saber is kinda fail, but we can't blame on them cuz our technology is not advanced enough to make the real one.
Beautifully constructed. Just beautiful...
Amuro will be very proud
I want to see an anime take place in Shizuoka now, to find out if Simmonsing has spread too far...
I estimate 5 maybe 10 more years till Gundams are fully functional like the animes
"But the beam saber and the rifle, maybe."
Sure, just carry a nuclear reactor and 5GW worth of batteries around. You might get out one shot... but it probably won't be pink or green or a beam because a pulse is much more devastating.
Don't take anime seriously ffs.
Where's our flying cars?!
Anon @ 05:52 09/07/2010
Did you mean Helicopters or Airplanes?
Silly anon, they already exist!
How about the fact that it couldn't possibly contain it's own power source with our current technology? You ignorant fuck.
Er, that Gundam in all those pictures could probably lay siege to the Americas, as well as most of Europe. Japan just needs to find a substance strong enough to stand up to the joint movement. The only reason this RX-78-2 hasn't left it's place with just one pilot is because the joints would probably break on the first leg lift.
Come on, Japan! Make some Luna titanium already!
lol...
Probably not that quickly. We can get a smaller scale one to work, but not something of that size. But the beam saber and the rifle, maybe.
@11:20
Are you sure it doesn't already have that installed?
eva is more plausible
@14:49 10/07/2010
i can't tell whether that's sarcasm or not, but if the power source would be in it, then it would be a generator, that needs constant maintenance and makes alot of noise. wouldnt it be easier to just get electicity from the local electricity company?
just a thought.
There's a gundam down here... surround and destroy it!!!
