Naruto Achieves Legendary Quality

Yeah i saw it and cringed the whole episode. they totally started to make content up because they are closing in too fast to the manga. and although the animation was done on purpose, it is not an art style that i pretty much care for.

I kinda like the chaotic style used.

Coming from an animator's point of view it seems as though they had their C or D list animator's at work. The quality is quite terrible compare to previous episodes...and from the animations here it looks like Tex avery did pain's animation running on water...o_o; that's totally not what I had expected. That last gif of pain where he has his hands up and then goes down to punch through the ground doesn't even have any in-betweens...there's no key poses at all...most of this is straight ahead animation, which you would usually use if you were animating growing vines, roots, worms, etc... Overall, the animation is terrible and not what I enjoy about the series...granted some episodes previously have small quirks but this one takes the cake in Fail for animation.

Because of this terrible animation, I've dropped the Naruto anime for good. I will, however, still read the manga, because it at least won't get so fucked up.

I loved the style on this one. I noticed the skewed animation, but it added more character to it - and was most probably done on purpose.

You should watch this episode just for the flow in the story. Usually I skip ahead on most Narutard episodes, but this one was very entertaining.

Now we can only hope that any Sonic anime looked this good...

The underpaid artists responsible for drawing this crap anime frame by frame have gone AWOL to protest. They were replaced by Otaku Schoolkids willing to draw for free. And a classic episode was born.

It's clear that everyone is just posting without reading even one comment, it's been stated before that this kind of art is a different animation style, often used in other animes like TTGL.

That Naruto switches in different animation and storyboard directors for fight scenes is hardly news. The episode before this one shared staff with the fight between Sasuke and Diedara, as well as Rock Lee and Gara. And as has been pointed out already, this one shares a director/storyboarder/etc. with the fight between Naruto and Sasuke which also prompted lots of misdirected rage. As should be blindingly obvious to anyone who bothered to watch it or is capable of a modicum of critical thinking, this guy likes to emphasize motion and violence through distortion, which is hardly a mark of QUALITY any more than it would make sense to complain that Kaiba's art is terrible just because it looks weird.

TL;DR: It looks like what it's supposed to look like, and Sankaku is hard up for anything worthwhile to post as usual.

I actually found this episode to be the best out of the past, oh, 100 or so. Sure it's silly, and lacks *perfect* animation quality, but considering some of you and your 2chan friends go batshit insane over minor details (See: angel beats) your expectations of anime quality for tv are stupidly high.

Its like how some of the flashback fighting scenes in birdy decode season 2 were very simple for the TV version but got a massive overhaul for the dvd version.

meh, i thought it was pretty good, i think they were trying to show how the nine tails power could distort reality of those around it(notice no one outside the fighting was affected by the severe change in graphics?,hinata too but probably because she wasnt doing anything)also the animation wasnt bad they were making it that way on purpose for the sake of the scene and whatnot so it cant be fail animation its just a win too harcore for lesser ppl^^.

It's obviously intentional. They distorted Pain's appearance and facial expressions to reflect that he is in fact a monster---i.e., that's a moving corpse, not a person. You really only notice this is you freeze frame. Well, have fun not enjoying yourself, which is what anime fans seem to love more than anything.

Remember when Naruto was about ninjas? Yeah... good times.

This animation technique, i forgot its name, isn't meant to look good on still frames: this technique requires a lot of efforts because it's not based on "key frames and inbetweens" traditional techniques, more like on the fly hand drawn frames and only good studios are able to produce such scenes such as Gainax or Satelight, you can find for example similar scenes in Noein, Birdie the mighty decode or Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

This kind of scenes watched at normal speed (not ridiculously slow gifs or stills) brings fluidity to fast paced scenes.
So on the contraty it is far from beeing proof of bad quality, even if naruto isn't known for its excellent animation, this episode is one of the best naruto episode in term of animation quality.

Fuckin' laughed to that "Pain-running-like-Sonic-on-Water" bit. Everything was hilarious..

But yeah, I was really disappointed.

If you watched Street Fighter Alpha Generations you'll see some similarities on the Ryu VS Akuma fight.

If the regular animators weren't so awful and lazy then they wouldn't need to bring in a guest animator witha completely different style for any actual battles. Well maybe i'm being harsh on the animators, its really more of a production issue where they probably try to save money by normally not having any characters move in battle.

I thought it was well done (especially the suspens of it), but like i say above, a different style. Just like the 3rd vs orochimaru, naruto vs sasuke, and a few others.

This was another episode that lacked quality. Its a big fight scene and should of contain the proper looks, etc.
Facial features (shadows, dirt marks, etc), body movement, fighting style, all looked kinda Americanized. Loose form of fighting. Only some close ups they had all the detail.
I was hyped up about this episode but only to bet let down. If they lower the quality, looks like a cheap anime done by another country.
And why is the kyuubi a fat slob of a fox?

One if the very serious parts of the series, I don't know about you, but I couldn't take it serious...

I was outraged when watching it. The quality was like in "Animatrix" which is really low.
Such good story and such low quality.

I can understand the deadlines and crisis but this is just too much...

I don't know too much about art or animation but I don't think warping dimensions like that would fly anywhere else.

Seriously, watch someone getting punched in the face that's been filmed with a hi-speed camera. I've never watched a full episode of naruto but after seeing a bunch of discussion about this particular episode it piqued my interests so I dled it and watched it for myself. All I can say is awesome. It reminded me of the fight in Noein. Overly exaggerated expressions seemed to fit the mood of the fight.

Sonic would be proud.

Hyper deformation is an animation style used to depict high speed... much the same way breaking joints is common place in 2d animation if it achieves the desired result. showing a single frame or a few gifs out of context is obviously gonna look bad

Besides the one where Pain takes a punch to the face, those are bad art style more than bad drawing. The one where Pain takes the punch is a mix of poorly understanding physics and bad art style.

Oh my gosh (I'm so shocked I prefer to not use acronyms!) That is so cheap!!!!! And I thought episode 3 of Gurren Lagann was bad! But that pales by comparison

FYI for those that dont know ep3 of gurren lagann has poor animation values and lousy sync up time with the sfx and voice overs.

what? I thought the episode was sick like they where obviously trying something new with the animation style and I loved it but I didnt think was because the running low on money. Its just their experimentations made the episode quite an experience, I still watch it other and other again especially Pains roar.

They should really test this art style out in the Filler episodes. Not try it out on one of the most serious fights in the series that is supposed to be all about emotion.

This reminds me of when the production quality went to shit in Draogon Ball Z during the Super Buu Vs Mysical Gohan fight. Sadly that was my favourite fight of the series and they drew it as if they were on shit-tons of cocaine.

I don't like Naruto either, but this is some good animation, although it looks weird. It's probably something experimental. It's not because it looks different and weird that it's bad. Deformation in animation is quite charming, in fact, my teachers would prefer this shit over normal Naruto animation (not that they're the standard for animation, but just stating the opinion of some professionals).

In the studios of Naruto, it is common that they hire other animators for fighting scenes. Probably because animating in a normal sense would take too much time (for shading and stuff), the second factor (the most important one) is because the animation would come off as much looser, meaning they move more dynamically. Which is a good thing for an action scene.
