A father who incestuously sired 7 children by his own daughter, keeping her prisoner for 12 years, has been arrested. He claims his daughter is as guilty as he is “because it was a consenting love.”
The 54-year-old Brazilian man was subjected to investigation after police were tipped off about the incident by an anonymous phone call.
The man lived in seclusion near a remote fishing village, so remote that police had to journey there by canoe.
On arriving officers found most of his 7 grandchildren, 4 girls and 3 boys with ages ranging from 2 months to 12 years, were kept naked and barely able to communicate:
“None of them were allowed to leave the house. None can read, they can barely communicate with other people. They were all threatened with their lives if they tried to escape or tell anyone about the situation.”
Police allege he kept his daughter, now 28, a captive in his hovel for 12 years whilst he repeatedly raped her. Police also found evidence that his 5-year-old granddaughter had been subject to sexual assault.
Another officer gives his view as to why he escaped detection:
“Everyone in the community suspected it because the daughter would be pregnant but always lived with her father. But the people there are simple and never said anything.”
Under Brazilian law he will not be charged until police have concluded their investigation, although he has already confessed. He faces probable charges of false imprisonment, rape, child abuse and neglect, attracting a 30 year maximum sentence.
Police found the man also had another daughter, aged 31, who claims he raped and had a child by her as well, though she managed to escape, leaving the child with him.
His grandchildren and daughter have since been placed into care.
Interviewed in prison, he claims his daughter bears as much responsibility as he does:
“It’s a crime, I know it’s a crime. But she was also committing it. I only did it because it was a consenting love. If she had not consented to it, I wouldn’t have done it.”
