Top 10 Scariest Video Game Enemies

01-crimson-head.jpg

A recently circulated list of the scariest game enemies has been provoking some debate, not least for its lack of diversity.

The ranking, based not just on looks but also suspense and method of destruction:

1. Crimson Head – Resident Evil
01-crimson-head.jpg

2. Iron Maiden – Resident Evil 4
02-regenerator.jpg

3. Slayers – The Suffering

4. Slashers – Dead Space

5. Nurses – Silent Hill

6. Deathclaw – Fallout

7. Spider Splicer – BioShock

8. Fast Zombie – Half-Life 2
08-fast-zombie.jpg

9. ReDead – Legend of Zelda
09-redead.jpg

10. The Witch – Left 4 Dead
10-thewitch.jpg

The makers of the list evidently have something of a fixation on zombies.

Those wondering about the absence of pyramid head can rejoice to know that such is his status he is now considered a “character” rather than a mere “enemy” and so gets to appear on some other list. On the other hand, it is harder to explain the absence of any System Shock enemies…

The Witch isn't very scary after the first time you see her. The first time it's "Hey look, that girl is crying! She must be a survivor so Ill just HOLY FUCK IM DEAD". But someone better make a list like this for bosses and add Pyramid Head.

Probably been said but, the list is invalid.
It lacks Pyramid Head in the top spot.
Therefore, this may be ignored with out consequence.

2D scary stuffs (such as Irem bio bosses) are scarier than anything at the list above.

Know Irem? They are behind the creations of R-Type and X-Multiply. Not forgetting the giant living statue with fleshy innards in In the Hunt.

X-Multiply is full of scary shit as fuck.

Where is that horrific people faked dog thing from Siren? Oh, the horror! That thing is nightmare inducing.

It's hard to make a list like this because it lumps ALL genres of horror in. Most of these enemies are purely of the "cat scare" variety. They freak you out because they pop out of nowhere and shriek. Hunters, Crimson Heads, pretty much every horror creature form any FPS, especialy love this, but then the Silent Hill creatures love to pull this as well, but usually, they just spawn after you go through a door that had a safe hall a moment before.

As for real scares, those Regenerators and Iron Maidens from RE4 had the stuff to make you wet your pants, even though you knew where they were and that they were slow as crap. The RE1 remake zombies were effective thanks largely to their ability to kill you in a 1 on 1 every time. A few Silent Hill creatures liked to pull this trick as well, and Deathclaws will ruin you if you aren't prepared, and they'll ruin you even if you are prepared and they are standing on the other side of a town.

I'm throwing my votes to the ghosts from Fatal Frame, the ghosts from Silent Hill 4, and everything in Siren. Those three scared me the most I think. Don't necessarily agree with spider splicers or slashers. Didn't have a problem with either. Some of the enemies from the first Condemned game frightened me too. Just walking along... arrghh! *thwack* pipe upside the head. Then they'd proceed to shake the fuck out of you. At which point you may kiss your ass goodbye because you weren't able to see shit.

I agree with Crimson Head taking top spot; unlike the Witch, you can't avoid them most of the time, and they take as well as dish out a ton of damage. But the Witch should probably take 2nd because if you can't get around one and happen to piss one off without dropping it instantly, it's instant death.

There's probably a distance between "Scary" and "Annoying". Too many games have "Pointless Foils" that can make a game maddeningly difficult.

Like the "Flea Humpers" from Castlevania. Esp in the NES graphics days, those things could really kill you off or wound you so much you got killed later if you didn't figure out the timing perfectly. They were in a way a lot worse than the Medusa heads.

Or, there was this arcade game that had incredible graphics for the time, "Magician Lord", but it had these weird gigeresque "Birds" that came from both angles and shot at you, no matter where you were, so too easy to get killed and lose hard-won powers.

As far as really "Scary" plenty of games could make one grotesque after another, but it was more of a matter of if this boss/character was really dangerous or just an annoying foil...

    *shudder*

If ReDead makes the list, then he sure as hell should have. Of the two, I'd deal with ReDead every time. At least by the time you start hitting ReDeads (at least in any Zelda game I've played) you're usually equipped to deal with them; The Butcher occurs so early in Diablo that you're almost NEVER prepared to fight him (not fairly, anyway - good thing he can't open doors).

    Nerd Rage!!!!!!

Sure, they may just be 2D sprites now, but back in the day, Doom was ground breaking and freaky. Encountering a Lost Soul for the first time at 1:00am left a lasting impact on me and many others early 90's computer gamers. It wasn't until Half-Life was any first person shooter more than just another Doom clone.

If the lame ass witch from L4D can make it in then the Doom and Quake franchises deserve a mention.

Doom monsters are scarier than some of the monsters on this list, like the Hell Knight. Now I'm talking Doom 3 here, but back when the first Doom came out.. if you weren't expecting it to come.. all of a sudden you'd push a button and you'd hear this super loud sound "NRAAAAA!!!!!!" then you run like hell because you spent all of your bullets on those stupid floating fire skulls..

AGREED!!! By far the scariest games I've ever played. I've never actually been scared playing a game except for fatal frame. The heartbeat in the controller quickens my pulse and trying to find that damned hanged man in the cameras finder with him coming into frame the moment he lunges at you is freaky as hell!

Yea, but it's hard to choose which is the scariest, there's the bridge girl, the stair girl, the one in that small space you have to crawl through*shudders*
Pretty much every damn ghost in the game is scary.

Yeah, the ghosts in Fatal Frame scared me so much, I had a hard time finishing the game. >_<

Me too. I especially hated the broken-neck ghost and the kid ghosts from the first game. Not to mention Kirie...

Oh, and the long hair ghost and the family master ghost (the guy with the demon mask).

Mind you, I still have mental scars from the nurse in Silent Hill...

Not to mention painful and scary flashbacks. =(

You too ExtrovertedOtaku? *shiver*....*remembers and goes to cry in the corner in the fetal position*

I could probably dig up a few scarier characters from games than a few on the list, but that would take alot of effort.
