Angel Beats Boasts Record Ratings

tenshi-yuri-posing.jpg

Angel Beats boasts record TV ratings in excess even of K-ON!, on some stations at least.

Despite at times shaky production values, the response to the anime has been overwhelmingly positive, and this extends to TV viewership as well.

MBS viewership of the 6th episode was in fact estimated at 4.9%, the highest rating late night anime in 3 years, and a respectable lead over moeblob anime K-ON!! at 3.9% in the same slot. K-ON! still maintains its lead on most stations, however.

Angel Beats now looks set to emulate Haruhi in both popularity and certain coincidental resemblances critics never tire of mentioning.

You hating bitches need to realize most supporters of this show like the plot, it's music and its characters and graphics despite the lack of a flawless execution (like the examples you mention are perfect... for example 'voices from a distant star' which I also happen to love).
You cry like little babies because every time someone acts a bit like Haruhi or Nagato (Rei Ayanami?) it's lack of originality (a good case can be made for the design of Yurippe's looks but not her personality), why don't you go back to bitching about the whole moe art-style in the first place or complain about video-games and TV over paintings, theater and books?

The simple fact here is people who hate K-On's guts (me included) love this show for its plot, music, graphics and characters and you don't get it and so you lump it in with the rubbish because you're emotionally butthurt victims after Endless Eight and that moeblob shit (K-On) I haven't even managed to get through one episode of.

If you don't like this stuff that's fine, but you're idiots if you can't grasp that others may find deep aesthetic values in the landscape and architectural designs, the characters, the music and the plot.

Christ, I dont know what to say. I'm enjoying it but please, deep values? Angel Beats! is so shallow. There is no depth to the plot whatsoever compared to Haruhi.

It's just sudden twists that come out of no where.

OP re.: I suppose your mileage may vary for both Angel Beats and Suzumiya Haruhi having plots, but they both clearly do to some extent. There is no such argument for K-On other than 'let's play music and be girls'.

It's not that mysterious, when you stop to consider WHY the shows like Angel Beats and Arakawa are so popular: it's because they cater to the largest possible market, and water themselves down to lowest-common-denominator levels in order to sell well. They aren't trying to provide any value to anyone, just give them some pretty blinking lights to clap at for a few minutes of their lives. A man nun! Awesome! Wow, Tenshi is so emotionless she reminds me of Rei.. or was it Nagato?

It's painfully obvious that Angel Beats sure isn't trying very hard, but it doesn't have to. They know all they need are KyoAni style visuals, lame slapstick humor, faux-drama for some "realism", and clones of some other popular franchise's top characters. I find Angel Beats mostly entertaining as a study in how well this approach works in spite of how lousy it is, because it's certainly not entertaining in and of itself. It's like they are just comically slapping the audience around, to prove that they can sell you a turd in a box and watch you entertain yourself with it.

If you want something more mature then just stick with Tatami Galaxy or Five Leaves, support them properly, and ignore the cries of the morons who "don't get it". They don't need to get it, don't want to get it, and we'll all be happier without their grubby influence reducing everything into a festival of idiocy. After all, they consider us morons for liking something that isn't brain-dead.

And this is the same problem with our films, books, games, and music as well. Ever since giant corporations took over all these industries, money has been the driving force, not artistic quality.

It's really a sad situation, as one has to wonder how many amazing stories, in any medium, have been unrealized from that money influence. And even worse when you realize the atmosphere around these different creative mediums isn't likely to change until the technology to create it on a professional level becomes accessible to the fans.
Shinkai's Voices of a Distant Star showed me this is getting closer to reality, but we still have a ways to go.

Five Leaves so far hasn't been good at all so far though. It's just this poor good guy, wealthy bad guy dilemma. Manglobe also seems to use the artstyle as a really bad excuse to not draw properly whenever a character is more than 5CM away from the camera.

And I don't see the problem with Arakawa. I'm a SHAFT fanboy though, but I hardly ever find a SHAFT show really great. But they're good. They execute this all around good feeling to their show and have visuals that are more unique than most.

Arakawa is by no means a super funny nor original show. But it just has this feeling to it which I don't really find in many shows outside of companies like SHAFT. But that's as subjective as it gets really.

For reference, Mapo Tofu is pronounced as "Mabou Doufu" in Japanese.

Although the English version of wikipedia(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mapo_doufu) says that it's called Mapo doufu / Mapo tofu in English,

you can go to the Japanese version of wikipedia (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%BA%BB%E5%A9%86%E8%B1%86%E8%85%90 [http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/麻婆豆腐]) and see that it's called 麻婆豆腐(まーぼーどうふ) aka MABOU DOUFU!

Angel Beats may not rely on moeblob.

But it sure relies on moe and extremely flat genric characters with all your average jokes.

I have no idea how Angel Beats is getting so much praise with such a poor execution of the show. They threw in a bunch of well known voice actors, made poor youtube-quality and standard anime jokes, made clichè flashbacks with lots of shaky camera, red colours and strong contrasts and make everything painfully obvious.

The only thing that holds its popularity seems to be Nagato and Haruhi... Sorry. Tenshi and Yuri.

the concept is interesting and worth a look but they don't know how to write a comedy/drama and most episodes end up feeling awkward because they shoehorn in the drama.

Angel Beats has a lot going for it, so it's high ratings - despite its sometimes lower-quality animation as was shown here - are rather understandable.

It's written by Jun Maeda, who did Kanon, AiR, and Clannad - all great VNs cum shows that really move you and have great stories and characters.

It's got good music. Despite ostensibly not being about music, the show has feature more unique music than K-ON!!, which is ostensibly about music.

It features likable and sympathetic characters. Not all of them, obviously, but even Yuri isn't really dislikable and unsympathetic.

It's got a plot that's moving forward, it's not just a camera flitting about following some people doing normal-people things. It's got a complex set of conflicts, a lot of which seems to be man vs. himself.

It features Tachibana Kanade who is so moe I'm gonna die and Mapo tofu, which tastes great.

    22:22 11/05/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

Previous history has nothing to do with what the person is actually making. The plot is interesting, but the execution of the story is horrible and very linear.

Good music? What? Pres a few piano roll keys, then press them again, faster and faster and faster. Done.

Likeable and symphatic? Generic you mean? There is no uniqueness to any of the characters. The strong dumbass, the big slow fat guy, the cool dude, the helpful cheerful guy, the tsundere main character, the normal confused main character that becomes the most important of all, the lolicon girl, the genius that everyone ignores. Etc.

They've done nothing with the characters except for exaggerating their stereotypical characteristics.

Plot that's moving forward? By having a DEATH OF THE WEEK setup? The plot got stuck in the first episode. The story is moving forward, but it's not telling us anything new or showing us anything new. It was obvious that Tenshi was misunderstood from the very first scene.

Did you see the episode when the "big fat slow guy" was playing baseball? Didn't look that slow to me. (but yeah everyone else is..) But really, how quickly do you expect things to go? It's a 13 episode series. What are they going to do, figure out and solve Tenshi problem in the first 3 episodes and eat mapo tofu for the rest?

And yes, that is how good music is if you actually listen to it.

    Comment by ゆっち
    23:36 11/05/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

The baseball game and all the quirky little things everyone did in that episode was a reference to Little Busters!. Without the cats and an angry Rin.

As for Angel Beats, it's a good show, provided it's something you're just going to watch and reflect on afterwards. Not constantly judge every moment, every twist, every plot device, every character trait as if the entirety of the show depends on those alone.

As for pacing and execution... Blame the director. For the story, feel free to blame Key. After all, a popular eroge company does not a good original anime make.

    I'd still watch it though.

Did you see that episode where the big fat guy was killed by the lasers?

    He just fucking stood there.

And you know what? The lasers went like this:

    Beam one: |
    Beam two: | |

Okay, so far so good, just duck and cover.

    Beam three: |X|

OH MY FUCKING GOD! THERE IS TWO BEAMS IN THE ---MIDDLE--- OF THE TWO OTHER BEAMS WE DODGED JUST FINE! WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO!?!?! JUMP! DUCK! DO WHATEVER.

Fat guy: "I know, I'll just stand here, I can't possibly dodge this one, I'm too slow now that there are lasers inbetween the lasers I dodged just fine".

The animation is not the problem, the problem is that Jun Maeda was drunk when he wrote this one.

So.. for a show to have "a lot going for it", it:
    - needs to have ok music
    - needs to have some semblance of plot
    - needs to have "sympathetic" and "likable" characters
    - needs to have at least one dose of moemoe and tasty cake/tofu/etc.

And I thought I had low standards for anime. But really, it's the last one that makes Angel Beats popular. There are a number of shows that are superior to it in the other categories, but no one likes them because they don't have KyoAni-style moemoe, or characters with an apparent oral fixation.
