The upcoming PS3 release of “White Album” has introduced a rare innovation to the visual novel genre in the form of the game’s “motion portrait” system, which can be seen in action below.
Whilst at first glance this might appear to be another forgettable console adventure game, it actually includes a rather impressive graphical innovation (for a visual novel) in the form of animated characters:
Presumably Sony’s comparatively rigorous PS3 quality standards are responsible for persuading the developers to introduce an innovation, something incredibly rare in the otherwise technologically stagnant visual novel format.
Whether eroge and visual novel publishers follow suit remains to be seen, although considering that even after decades of publishing the same simple format they still release occasional bugfests, the chances do not seem good.

All the above visual novels, and then Tokimeki Memorial 3. Back in the day of 2, it was the "emotion voice system", and 3 was the choppy animated sprites.
Until the day when I no longer see layered-stage and sprites, a VN will always be just that - a VN.
Adapting common existing technology doesn't sound like much of an "innovation" to me.
EVOLUTION
More reason to play my ps3 now.
isn't the first girl voiced by aya hirano
OBJECTION!
The Phoenix Wright/Gyakuten Saiban series has been doing animation like this for years!
(Face it, Phoenix Wright is a visual novel - and a very good one at that)
Wait, hold the phone. I don't understand how this "innovation" is any better or more impressive than the animated graphics in Time Leap. Care to explain it to me Artefact?
Innovation. Right.
oh good they're finally using flash
this is amazing, i love it
I'm surprised that the gaming industry didn't think of this sooner -.-; It makes visual novels a hell lot more natural than the usual ones.
I don´t know why this "animation" reminds me a little the Valkyria Chronicles game animation ... but anyways seems a improvement on the genre.
Love is beautiful, I regret from the depth of my soul the fact that I never had the opportunity to live similar experiences like in games as this.
Seeing what I missed makes me realize that this will be a void that will be accompany me for the rest of my life.
If you have the opportunity, seek love in a real person. A waifu is a one-sided love that will never give you real love.
WTB PC version... why PS3? WHY WHY WHY
The Kamen no Maid Guy game on PSP used this exact same 'tech'. It made the game worth playing, sort of.
do like do want
This isn't innovative. Tinkerbell H-games have been doing this for years.
*o* -doki
well it does seems more realistic, except for the tingling on the boobs
all i see is very advance Overflow style ie great.
Expecting this as a trend for the genre might be a bit too much.
Odin Sphere used this kind of animation, and that was made a while ago.
this is not really too different from what they were trying to accomplish in Chaos:Head.
Wait, is this the same technology as the motion stuff they used for that PSP Haruhi game a few years back? Or do they simply look the same?
I'm surprised this hasn't been done sooner.
Spoiler: It has.
visual novel games are even worse than japanese shitty rpg games, i'd rather play fps.
Mana... she looks like the middle sister from Minami-ke
the resemblance is sooo uncanny it looks strange with that personality T_T...
Visions of empty streets and cute girls coupled with nostalgic piano music always remind me of Planetarian:

And now I'm depressed. ;_;
You happy now Artefact?!! o.0'
omfg do want
I'm not sure if I'm just easily impressed or what, I love the realistic backgrounds. Excuse me if I'm getting in the way of your sophisticated discussion about the physics of the female body.
What exactly is so innovating about this? There's plenty of visual novels games/parts in games that use animated characters. Obviously this looks better than most still looks too much like flash animated stuff in my opinion.
Whats wrong with flash? I think it works well with static images like this. Gives a visual novel more flow.
Holy shit, you mean this game has PICTURES... that MOVE?!? We're living in the future now!!!
Hmm, to be honest it doesn't look all that innovative to me. I've seen other visual novels use animated characters in 2D during dialogues - one is an eroge named Momoiro Paradise. Well maybe not as smooth in framerate, but almost more like watching TV Anime.
lol Momoiro paradise, was like "Pure animated", not this kind of "Pseudo 3d". :D
Seriously people, stop nit-picking things that you won't even experience and play....
Nice ^_^
Azusa? O_o
Simply NO, Azusa is not the "original one"
Pictures in motion :O Eureka!
The game looks nice :)
the animated characters ... i don't see the innovation,Sogna introduced this feature in 1993.
sogna us "Full animation" not this "pseudo 3d technique".
I hope this will be ported to PC...
WOW! This looks nice, I can't wait to play it. Agarest Senki Zero was kinda like this only not as animated, it impressed me then so I really want to see this!
Lol Sony does it again attempting to lay "innovation" claims on something that was done a long time ago other have already given examples.
I still like my Ps3 but this games characters movements look somewhat unnatural (yeah that jiggle...) even that Idol Master crap looks better than this.
You know what would be "innovative" make RPG's (that don't hold your hand and make you go in a straight line and Visual Novels with a different/decent storyline...) no played out "baka" stuff either.
"Sigh" I wonder if my sooner than you think future VN will go over peoples heads or not.
I'd be happy just to be able to play and understand a sim-date game.
YUKI MORIKAWA!!!!!
YOU FAIL ANON, RINA OGATA IS SUPERIOR...
What am I supposed to be looking for in the video? What is so special about it?
