Hatsune Miku Graces PS3 in Project Diva Dreamy Theater

Miku fans have been gratified to learn the details of Hatsune Miku’s upcoming PS3 game debut in the form of Project Diva Dreamy Theater, although they may be left feeling a little short-changed…

The game (or “expansion kit” – it is not clear what Sega is calling it) has now been formally announced as being set for release in the summer of 2010, to be distributed online over the PlayStation Network for an as yet unannounced price.

Fans may however be perturbed to learn this is not a PS3 game as such – a PSP (but not the PSP Go) and a copy of Project Diva are required, along with a USB cable, with the game being played on the PSP via a USB link to PS3, which outputs HD visuals to its TV display as usual.

The PS3 is thus apparently merely re-rendering the data outputted by the PSP.

In any case, the graphics are gorgeous and sure to be a hit with Project Diva fans:

Project Diva saves are importable, although it seems this requires yet more hardware in the form of a memory stick.

Project Diva 2nd, the PSP game’s full sequel, is due at the end of July – no similar functionality has yet been announced for that title.

An arcade version of the first game in full HD is also in the late stages of development – it seems likely Dreamy Theater development is linked to this.

Just why Sega feels it necessary to release this as an inconvenient PSP/PS3 crossover and not a standalone port or sequel for the PS3 is not clear.

I hope something like this is made that works with all PSP games. I'd use my psp more if I could use a PS3 controller with it.

Not really that inconvenient actually if you already had a PSP and PS3 to begin with. The cable's the same cable used to recharge the PS3 controller anyway and it came free with the console. Only extra thing you'd really need is a copy of the game itself and this DLC and you're practically set, unless I'm missing something. Once connected I guess you can just treat the PSP like a wired controller for the PS3 lol.

This seems like some kind of klugey thing that's not going to work properly, and leave buyers dissatisfied.

I like Miku, and already have a PSP and PS/3, but I'm not gonna touch this game.

Such pretty visuals. Doesn't seem like a bad deal considering that most fans already own all the prerequisites.

Aww, come on. The Wii could have this game in spades. Maybe a Wii Port? Please? :P

Just to keep the fans happy, yes, I know the PS3 is revolutionary and maybe I should get one (the PSP is also a nifty portable console) but in reality, imagine the audience that it would reach with having two systems - the Wii version could be button pressing frenzy (Boom Boom Rocket, anyone?) and the PSP/PS3 version is what it is at the moment.

The game looks awesome, but I doubt we'll see it in other countries like Australia...

Unless I wait for a translated ISO to pop up for the PSP...

If you screw up with the button pressing, does Miku give you a glare, >_< or anything? ie. If you stuff up, she stuffs up as well?

I think there might be a problem with this. How perfect is your AV setup? Project Diva PSP has no calibration setting, does it? Like Rock Band, etc.? Not a problem on the PSP itself, but once you hook it up to a TV and start getting video or audio lag...

It doesn't matter what sega makes as long as miku is on the cover there will always be a buyer.

... This indeed looks awesome, but I cannot stop to remember the SEGA MEGADRIVE CD 32X... and you know what I mean. Obviously, nobody can compare this awesome feature the game will have to what they used to do with "hardware add-ons" before.

    THIS

Ah, the Sega CD-32X combo. The selfcesting console accessories that bore crappy games and equally crappy gaming experiences...

On topic, that's one fine-looking Miku right there. Just as awesome as the Miku's Day concert rendition.

to be honest i would have been happier if it was just a copy of project diva arcade rather than it being... this.

it just seems arbitrarily complicated to have to use your psp, with project diva, with a usb-b connection, with your gamesave; rather than just using a regular controller.
if it ends up being $60+ than i'm gonna look for a way to pirate it.

Hate to break this to you, but this PS3 software (a) was never, ever positioned as being any kind of stand-alone product, and (b) was announced specifically in conjunction with the announcement of Project Diva 2 for the PSP.

So, "similar function" for Diva 2 has indeed been announced as, well, this is it.

The USB to mini-USB cable needed comes with the PS3 and is the same cable used to connect the Dualshock3 controller to the system for recharge. For the record, that saves you a grand total of $5 US, which is what it would cost otherwise. ;p

The next special Playstation games will only work with Sony TVs. You'll need an additional connection cable for 100 bucks, of course.
