Sea Shepherd Japan Fanclub Really Does Love Whales

sea-shepherd-fanclub-1.jpg

A group identifying itself as the “Sea Shepherd Japan Fanclub” is keen to ensure the world knows that there are those in Japan whose love for whales is as fervently felt as elsewhere in the world:

Some of their suggested livery:

sea-shepherd-fanclub-1.jpg
sea-shepherd-fanclub-2.jpg

They are also apparently admirers of Greenpeace’s criminal antics:

Their homepage includes more useful information for whale lovers, as well as a link to a certain episode of South Park.

    Enjoy it, then...

Just hope you don't get a taste for the endangered species you help make extinct. I've joked in the past, for hyperbole purposes about turning a swimming pool into a salt water tank to raise sharks. Trump would have trouble doing that for even a Minke whale.

Simply put, the oceans are near a "Collapse" point as trawlers catch more efficiently driven better by higher and higher prices for fish.

Want the oceans to become a green swamp full of deadly jellyfish? That's what happens when you eat the creatures that among other things filter feed the plankton and eat the jellyfish. (tuna, sharks, whales...to begin with)

And don't give me that "Research" garbage. Here's an article, a more mainstream media one from WIRED, that points out the obvious; Endangered whale meat is turning up in restaraunts, obviously from the Japanese fleet primarily. The "Illegal whaling" charges seem quite correct. It should be clear they aren't just targeting a few "Minke" whales for research but catching any and everything they can and not just to 'feed their people' but to make big bucks selling it.

It's got a neat king size whale sushi tray you'll love.

so a group of people specifically looking for illegal endangered whale meat found some in a whopping 2 restaurants.

it's to bad that article failed to disclose how many restaurants they had to check to find those 2 (hint: it was probably a whole lot more than 2).

    11:53 16/04/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

The American team heard rumours that whale meat was served in that specific restaurant. Serving whale meat, of any kind, is illegal so they went in to check. Morale: you can't keep secrets like that. Given enough customers, someone will blab.
Doing a systematic check of all Japanese restaurants, or even just those in LA, is impossible due to the high costs of such an operation, and the difficulty of turning secret stings into routine work.
I don't know the story behind the Korean restaurant, so I won't comment on that one.

    Comment by Anonymous
    15:40 16/04/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

really that just makes the article even worse. "researchers" making claims about the problem being even more widespread than they thought because they found whale meat in one place, which was the only place they checked, which they had already heard might have whale meat.

one biased positive result is hardly grounds to suggest the widespread sale of whale meat.

    Comment by Anonymous
    05:43 17/04/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

They drew that (tentative) conclusion because they found meat from the same catch in a restaurant in Korea. They had expected to find a bad apple, but found an indication of the existence of an international black market whale meat sales network.
They are nowhere claiming that most Japanese restaurants sell whale meat.

You know, when thinking about it...

They are showing canned whale. That means canned whaling factories are pumping this stuff out. I don't care how huge a whale it, it takes more than a few "reserch specimens" to justify mass canning.

Does the killing of these non-rare whales ever result in the unintentional deaths of many other species, including perhaps the rarer whales? Surely the act of whale hunting can't be all that environmentally safe.

    Does anyone know?

Anyone who claim that humans will destroy this planet, unless we worry about the environment, is a tool.

We could launch all our nukes and this planet would still do great. It'd probably be a barren wasteland for a few hundred million years, but how much is that in a planet's timespan, anyway?

You don't care about the environment, your goals are entirely anthropological. It's only an issue because it might become an inconvenience, or even a problem at some point. And I can agree with that, it is damaging to the human race to destroy our environment, but cut the fucking bullshit, just confess that you're just as selfish as the rest of us.

I don't see the point in fighting whalers, they're just people doing their job to feed their family.
If something swims, crawls, jumps, hops, skips, flies, crawls, or inadequately defends itself, it's bound to be eaten.

Besides, the Japanese are the masters at gourmet raw fish.

They mostly hunt minke whales, which are not at all endangered. The collection of rarer species has spiked sharply as the Japanese fishing fleets faced increasing opposition and were unable to get to their regular quotas. Don't take my word for it, look it up yourself.

The argument it's ok to harvest rarer species because you can't get to the minke to meet a quota just adds to Sea Shepard's side of the argument.
If they can't meet their quota then they should just raise the price of what they have caught and sell it for more.

That's what happens when the crab fishing is not good in the US they raise the price.

So what if some species become extinct? Millions of species have and will become extinct in the history of the Earth. Why are many humans so arrogant to believe that we need to preserve the current state of the Earth?
Human civilization has only existed for around 5000 years, while the earth is over 4 500 000 000 years old and will be able to sustain life for around 1 000 000 000 years into the future.
The inhabitants of Earth in the year 70872835 will surely be very pleased that some humans wanted to save endangered whales in the year 2010. Whatever these 'humans' and 'whales' things are.
It's not like we came from outer space and are now destroying this planet, we are part of the planet and part of evolution. The worst thing we could do is wipe out our own species (along with a lot of other species) but that wouldn't be very significant considering the extensive history of wiped out species on Earth.

That's like saying anthropomorphic climate change does not matter cause climate has always been changing.

Arguments like that of course completely misses that it is the _RATE_ of change that is worrying, not that there is change. E.g. current estimates of extinction rates are 100-1000 times the background rate of extinction.

    _THAT_ is what worries people.

The reason why we have to care that some species get extinct is the fact that it's not just "some", but that we've directly and indirectly caused the extinction of so many species it's only matched by major planet-wide natural "disasters". Some argue even more than that. And the reason why this matters is because we don't have a back-up Earth waiting for us - we're burning and destroying our only home, our only source of food and our only living habitat. If this keeps up, Homo Sapiens will become extinct soon.

    I'm sort of hoping some of humankind will survive, even though they'll be heavily culled and put through pretty harsh evolutionary forces (the situation created by ourselves). Probably too much to be called Homo Sapiens anymore. The probable lack of tech toys and internet in the future is too sad to thoroughly contemplate ;_;
