In the off season the K-On girls worked their part time jobs as they starred in a show when them wearing green military uniforms and blowing trumpets and they earned enough money doing it to buy the new equipment for the season 2 show. Looks like they bought a bunch of other nick-nacks too. By the looks of it if there is a season 3 of K-ON it will be called Ad-On for advertisements galore.

I think the product placement and location scenes make K-ON!! all the more fun. It must be murder on the animation staff to have to detail all of this. The snow scene in the OP was nicely rendered.

I kind of doubt that. There was clear product placement in the Nodame Cantible series; all the instruments featured were Yamaha branded. Here we have a vast array of brands. On the instruments alone there's Fender, Gibson, Yamaha and Korg. The amps being used appear to be primarily Marshall, but I'm pretty sure Mugi uses a Roland keyboard amp.
I'd think if they were going to be doing placement it'd be with primary Japanese brands. Fender Japan is more an independent company from Fender Musical Instruments than most people realize, but the brand is still American even if the company (and the actual instruments featured) isn't. Korg, Roland and Yamaha are Japanese companies, but Gibson is 100% American, and Marshall is British.
The thing is, even prominent Japanese instrument manufacturers like E.S.P. and Ibanez aren't featured, leading me to believe kyoani just went with whatever was in the manga (aside from Mio's switch from a Precision Bass to a Jazz bass, which was later mirrored in the manga without any explanation).
In 1st series there was also VOX (i own one)and Ashdown amps in background in Tsumugi`s holiday houses. KyoAni can have a contract with Rakuten which is selling all these brands.
Also Korg owns VOX. In coming ep.2 Yui has a new guitar. My guess is it`s a Ibanez shredder model, maybe of Satriani or Vai type.
while new to anime, its surely not new to most other visual media.

It irks me when anime is being driven to such mass consumerism. Its somewhat like Marx's concept of alienation; I feel alienated from the original concept of why anime was created (artform/entertainment) to some of its current purpose (sell stuff/fan service etc). Its all just getting out of hand.

I think you're seeing it backwards. "K-On!" is simply happening now. It will spawn or influence something else later and morph into whatever's next.
Its not the Marketers who are to blame - it's the Otaku's who will buy anything "K-On!"- there can't be enough products. People are simply cashing in. Sides, even without the products & marketing the show is still CUTE and MOE-rific.

Believe me I know how you feel. It's getting harder and harder to find a counter to the statement that anime really was better in the old days. It's even become alienated from it's roots because before it was just an art style that happened to grow out of Japan with concepts that were often more mature than Western cartoons instead of the fringe fetishistic cycle of tropes that it's become. That was the appeal of it back in the 80's, 90's and even the early 20th century. Now it feels more like self parody in all but a few cases.
