At the recently concluded Tokyo International Anime Fair, it was revealed that classic super robot anime series, Gaiking, will soon have a Hollywood movie adaptation.
The adaptation will be headed by Jules Urbach and directed by Matthew Gratzner, both of whom are big names in the CG industry in Hollywood, with Jules handling the effects in the movie “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and Matthew being involved with “The Dark Knight” and “Iron Man“, to name but a few.
Both promised that the movie will return to its anime roots for the storyline, possibly a jab at a certain transforming robot movie adaptation that heavily relies on CG animation and little else.
The trailer can be seen below:

The controls look awesome. I wanna ride it.
I got something for you to ride,...
This is the greatest news all day.
I don't like how the wing looks, and it should be color red.
Well the intro when the robot appear in streets underground kinda look like "Big O". Speaking of robot in the 70s I do watch them(although that time Gundam wasn't introduce in our country bec maybe of martial law that bans revolt in tyrants in TV) in my kids years I never recall Gaiking, he look like UFO Robot Grendizer but with a longer horn and a fat body? Wish they choose Mazinger Z or Voltes 5(Combattler V).
Well i never saw gaiking and i wonder why they chose something so under the radar type of series. But I'm hoping it turns out good since theirs not many mech movies of them out there. So yeah this could be a stepping stone out of the transformers shadow in America hopefully cause I'm really getting sick of them. If this turns out good maybe there will be a live-action gundam movie in the future who knows. :)
This trailer makes it look like Gaiking's the villain haha.
here comes the religious protesters lol
I have to admit, so far it looks interesting.
You cannot deny it. Thats fucking Transformers
1. HOLY SHITSNACKS!
2. I am impressed with how the trailer work but knowing how hollywood has been with anime and video games I remain just a smidge bit skeptical bout how this will fly.
End statement: If these guys know what their doing that I say have at it.
They better not fuck this up.
actually they already did it. Its pretty fucked up as it is. They're trying to fix it so it will be releaseable.
*facepalm* ... GUY, GUY!! IT MUST BE GUY PILOTING TEH ROBOT!!! ... *sigh* All teh manly anime/games made into movies are being girlified ... WHY!!!? I DON'T MIND THE SEQUEL BEING LEAD BY A GIRL BUT NOT THE FIRST ONE!!!
From what we know, it's a concept trailer and not necessarily applicable to the final product. Looks like a glorious CG orgasm, so I'll be watching it come hail or high water.
Where is Sanshiro?????It's not a real Gaiking if there is no manly pilot shouting Gaiking's signature moves. The size is somewhat inaacurate, if Gaiking robot is already that big, Dairyumaryu should be the size of a city block. Hydroooo Blazerrrr!!
Where is Sanshirooooooo???? It's not Gaiking if there is manly pilot shouting Gaiking's signature moves. If the Gaiking robot is already that big, Dairyumaryu should be the size of a city block!
There better be hot-bloodedness, guts and shouting...
I can't believe they're spending millions on some obscure old school super robot anime.
They should've adapted something newer like Gurren Lagann.
Never actually saw Gaiking, and I doubt I ever will, or even watch this movie, but if I was a fan of this series i'd totally want the cool old paint style with the gold thinger and red wings
Yay
a girl who can kick all the asses.
Kick my ass as well!!
the trailer looks like Avatar with robots = puke
(the cars look like plastic toys)
I hope these guys or James Cameron won't try to make an Eva live action movie.
What's next?Gundam The Movie (Hollywood version)?
Gurenn Lagan? or even better Shogun Getter!!!
NO...No..no..wait the best is if somebody make a hollywood adaptation of Mazinger Z.
hollywood mazinger.... i can almost hear sayaka screaming "44double-deeee" and fires aphrodai's missiles.
and the getter robots? black getter will have a nigger pilot.
fuck you loser
no, please not gurren lagann
cuz it will be gurren lagann : evolution
This is just a teaser, the final product is where they'll put the bulk of their resources, and as a result, the final product will look loads better.
"I hope these guys or James Cameron won't try to make an Eva live action movie."
A live action eva movie was announced back in 03, it's just that nothing has really happened with it yet.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neon_genesis_evangelion#Live-action_film
I know. Probably only a marketing trick.
as always with all hollywood adaptations its going to be trash
I don't think people understand the difference between media types and a thing called localization. Making a live-action movie from an anime is the the same as making a movie adaption from a book. Making it the same isn't possible due to various limitations among other things.
At least these guys are making an EFFORT to be true to the anime without risking money at the box office.
And the trailer looked pretty cool.
what effort? i like to see what effort they put into making dragonball
and hollywood doesnt care about making good movies anymore.all they care about now is making a profit
Note: Just because it's Hollywood doesn't mean that all directors and screenwriters in Hollywood are the same. The people who did Dragonball are not taking part in the production of this movie. If they were I know the author would have mentioned it.
Well the guy did Iron man and the Dark Knight. So you got to have a little how that they won't ruin it.
Actually, since it is going to be made by Americans it probably won't be close to the original but at least it will look cool LOL.
Woops. Not a "little how" I meant "little hope". Well that is your opinion and although i respect it, I have to say that at least the production values were high. Worse comes to worse it turns out to be a crappy movie with crappy plot and characters but epic CG.
My hope is that it does well and then maybe we can see some good gundam movies in the future. (I am such a mecha fanboy)
or... they ruin everything... here's hoping.
Dark Knight and Iron Man are shit anyway.
i disagree totally. you probably havent even read the comic. let the fans judge.
hope this movie not destined like previous real action gundam movie...
previous one is suck!!
Yep lets hope its not another gundam/dragonball/godzilla fiasco.
i hope it wont ruin the series like how the dragonball movie did. these guys have big names though, i hope the do well.
wow really? There was such a thing?! How old is it?
About years old and it was filmed in Canada...
I heard it was a movie that one of the companies made in response to the hype of gundam back in 2000. That's why they didn't really care much about the story line and other crap. And by Canada, it's Vancouver, since one of the scenes was shot at my university :)
it was called g-savoir. productions for that movie was soo crappy. search it on youtube
10 years old...
sorry, NumLock
so it was mighty low production. that kinda explains alot in a good way. it probably wont be a bad idea to make another gundam movie.
holy fuck :O
The only thing I didn't like was the lady, the rest is good.
What with the retractable helm? Made no sense.
Kinda had an androgynous look...
I know this series. I think I am going to watch it. As long they bring it well.
I hope i can believe this matthew guy.. he used to be a visual effects supervisor.. now a director? hmm.. i think it's reasonable to have a doubt..
just according to keikaku...
(Note: keikaku means plan.)
A director is only as good as his crew. Let's hope he has a good clapper-loader, script supervisor, DOP, cameraman, editor, and whatever you need for all that CG junk.
director, not Screenwriter
Oi, he doesn't care if someone may still in one of those cars, does he?
There you are running for three months doing pasperwork to get your taxi driver license then you work your ass of in company taxis until you buy one of your own so you can get full income and some asshole jumps out with a huge mecha under the street destroying everything.
Some people have no decency left in them.
First off, that's a woman... And secondly... Have you seen how some women drive? Maybe she's in that same class of drivers...
stfu, i have a giant robot
And I bet it's must be very hot sitting in a big machine wearing that suit.
First, it was obviously a woman, and secondly, I think it's reasonable to assume that this thing is air-conditioned...
Too much grey and black. It's like I'm in an AAA war game.
Old color-scheme > lazy paint job
No need to turn the Gaiking in to Gay-king amirite?
Right paint that thing yellow and red people will think it's a cartoon.. no thanks, silver looks best.
the beginning of the trailer is exactly like the beginning of ffVII... that aside, we might get to see an interesting movie. I'm looking forward to this.
girl selling flowers + train =/= giant robot
Are you fucking high?
Too much fucking grey and black. It's like I'm in some AAA fps game.
Well this looks promising
It's not going to be a blockbuster hit, since ALOT of people especially westerners don't know who Gaiking is. :-/
All south america knows who is Gaiking but we know him by the name of "El Gladiador".
And it won't matter. It has big names to it (presumably) and lots of effects and CG porn. That's all the vast majority of cinema-goers care about anyway.
Am I the only one who thinks that Hollywood is starting to run out of original ideas for movies and tv shows and as is now looking to other countries who have had at least a bit of popularity in the USA, like Japan, to fulfill their lack of originality? I mean, I'm happy that Japan is getting more recognition for their media influence in the US, but most of the time when Hollywood adapts things from manga and anime, it usually is disasterous. Perhaps they should send their screen play writers and directors to live in Japan a few years so they can get their own ideas for a new Hollywood movie with Japanese origin. At least to have them stop destroying popular titles like Dragon Ball could have been or Speed Racer. Those movies were jokes. Although this Gaiking looks promising, I'll have to wait to pass true judgement. I don't want to be disappointed again...
What do you mean, "most of the time"?
Speed Racer was a good movie, fuck your couch.
If you read the article from here:
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/44426
you'll see that it's not really a trailer and more of a "proof of concept".
While I'm still not sold on the whole idea, at least their intentions "sound" good. It remains to be seen whether they can translate that onto film.
I saw Gaiking in South America in a show called "El festival de los robots"(festival of robots) and I can say that the pilot of Gaiking never was a woman and Gaiking never came out from underground. He came from the air all the time!.
"Both promised that the movie will return to its anime roots for the storyline"
xD what a joke but I will watch anyway.
I do agree it wasn't a girl It was some man who was a baseball player lost who broken his hand from an Alien attack. When I first watch this series it was on VHS my mom rented it and you right it never came Underground it came from the sea.
okay, believe it or not, I kinda thought that it looks promising. the trailer looks really good.
Gayking
fuck you
Gaiking has more colors than that!! This is clearly Kaikink. And Kaikink sucks.
hmmmmm. This looks like this movie is going to become a stepping stone of the hollywood GUNDAM live adaptation movies.
What.
if it sticks to being cg it may be decent. live action anime adaptations are terrible as a rule.
Return to the roots of the original ... right~
The last I remembered the pilot of the machine is a guy baseball player named Sanshiro Tsuwabuki. This is a women ... right?
I know nothing about Gaiking but I think I can get to like this.
