Funimation’s English release of top pantsu anime Strike Witches is all but here, with the DVD due at the end of the month. To commemorate the occasion, Funimation and Sankaku Complex are offering users the chance to get some free copies of the DVD.

The latest trailer once again shows off their deft handling of the linguistic minefield inherent in the different meanings of “pants” (and yes it does have subtitles and it is claimed to be completely uncensored):

More at the official site (as long as you reside in the chosen land).

Funimation are giving away a number of copies of the anime free to Sankaku Complex users – see the competition page for full details.

Otherwise, the DVD is available for immediate pre-order now.

I don't care for the dubs, they usually suck - but as long as they keep decent subs, I will support anime in North America.

So if FUMI are reading these comments, don't alter the subs to fit western culture.

I'm sorry to disagree. Strongly. They did their usual butcher job. The voice acting is mis-cast and mis-directed. Whoever does Mio Sakimoto voice doesn't seem to have bothered to watch the show she is voicing. Yoshika comes off like a whiny little baby, when in fact, it is established from the first time we see her that she is headstrong, single-minded, etc. In fact, none of the characterizations are as strong or accurate as they should be. The dialogue lacks the humor of the original as well.

Funimations' typical hack job of script buggery. Stupid, senseless changes to the dialogue. Funimation seems fond "interpreting" rather than "translating". I hear a lot of you complain about fansubbers, but the WORST fansub beats anything out of this studio by miles.

Yeah, yeah,... "a lot of people like dubs"... fine.

Glad this got over the USA, with an English track too. I would expect ADV (if they were still around) to license it, but Funi grabbing it was surprising.

And the package is great. Especially the back, that lady had too much fun making it. She even included the girls stats. So a lot of detail went into licensing this...

I'm sorry to disagree, strongly. FUNimation did their usual butcher job. The voice acting is mis-cast and mis-directed. Whoever does Mio Sakimoto voice doesn't seem to have bothered to watch the show. Yoshika comes off like a whiny little baby, when in fact, it is established from the first time we see her that she is headstrong, single-minded, etc. In fact, none of the characterizations are as strong or accurate as they should be. The dialogue lacks the humor of the original as well. Funimation seems to assume we are all stupid, and need help with the hard words, and concepts.

Here are just two examples that set my teeth on edge:

I'll bet Sakimoto-san knows the difference between a HEDGEHOG and a PORCUPINE, and why the reference to the Neuroi ship as a hedgehog makes sense and the translated "porcupine" does not.

Episode two…. the narrator's voice, like all the secondary vocal acting on this show, is simply unappealing. Annoying really. And that particular opening narration is SO poorly written.

Also in epi 2… we're back from the OP… long camera shot of fleet…. In the original, we hear distant alarms and the muffled voice of the flight deck chief over the intercom. In the American version you have loud screaming and unnecessary "military-speak" babble…. Funimation's idea of "realism" I assume.

Again, I cannot emphasize enough how absolutely DREADFUL the voice acting in this series is. And it is clear that most of the problem is in the voice director(s). I still cannot get over how mis-cast Sakimoto is.

OH! And how could I forget the fact that they changed Perrine's unrequited love of the Major to "brown-noseing" Can't be saying nuthin positive about no queers, huh? Again, typical.

Funimations' usual hack job of script buggery. Stupid, senseless changes to the dialogue. Funimation seems fond "interpreting" rather than "translating". I hear a lot of you complain about fansubbers, but the WORST fansub beats anything out of this studio by miles.

    Comment by Anonymous
    01:37 23/03/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

If people don't like the dubs, you can just watch it subtitled. The magic of dvd's these days and the best part of funimation is that most of the time, including this time, they have dual audio unlike 4kids or nelvana releases. Dub haters have no reason to complain anymore and just do so for the sake of complaining like their words have some kind of importance anymore.

    Comment by Anonymous
    19:16 23/03/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

I like dubs, I just don't like bad dubs. If I were to purchase products with bad dubs because I can always watch the Japanese audio with subtitles then what incentive does the company, in this case Funimation, have to produce good dubs? Only purchasing titles with high quality dubs provides a financial incentive for companies to ensure that dubbed releases are of high quality, and without that incentive the companies will continue to produce low quality dubs.

Of coarse, the people who hate *all* dubs should shut up and stop complaining, however, your comment makes it sound like you think bad dubs are acceptable because the Japanese audio with subtitles are there as an alternative, which is ridiculous.

I think most people would agree, at least from whats shown in the preview here, the strike witches dub seems to be fairly low on the quality scale.

No shit, I'm sure most people know full well that most Anime DVD/Blue-Ray releases are Dual Audio, but that's not the point. The point is that when they Dub Anime around these parts they usually fuck it up, the actors don't seem to give off the same kind of emotion as their Japanese counterparts.

Plus for those of us who've seen the original the choice of VA is an issue (well for me and my friends anyway, I'm assuming others feel the same), I mean they never even try to get people who sound like the original cast, I remember when I saw the dub of Gundam 00 some of the VAs would have been better playing other characters.

Not to mention that we only got about a dozen pro VAs here in the states and they're in EVERYTHING games, anime, commercials; and most have very little variance in there vocal range. Take Steven Blum for instance, ever since I saw Cowboy Bebop I've heard Spike everywhere. Hell my friend was playing Syphon Filter and said he voiced like 5-7 characters from random guards to a main villain.

This Strike Witches dub however... the voices themselves are fine and dandy but their inflections are just all terrible, this was the fault of the ADR director I think.

EEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeevery time a dub-available release gets out, the anti-dubs people(I am REALLY tempted to use the word weaboo here, but while not all of them are, most of them definitely are. Just a question of whether or not they admit it) are the FIRST to highlight their opinion. Sure, it's a free Internet, but don't blame anyone else when others look down upon them and fire back opinions of their own that clash with these anti-dubs mob, because 'free' also appeals to those who don't share the same opinion as you, WEABOO! *ah, I slipped my fingers!*

Listen to that shit first before you go right out and say "Dub sucks WTF!" I don't care if you have to torrent it or watch it off some generous Spaniard who is seeding on Targa, just watch 'em first.

Oh, and news flash: The Japanese have their own share of bad acting. You might not give a shit because you don't understand Japanese, but admitting to not know Japanese only renders your opinions even much less credible.

I've seen some great VA casting/dubs (Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Panic!), and some bad ones, as well.

Keep in mind that part of the problem with dubs is not the directors'/VAs' fault. The dub has to match the mouth movements, and the timing of the mouth open/mouth closed movements is animated to match the original language.

There are bad Japanese dubs... Most English dubbed anime even now though, makes old kung-fu movies look like masterpieces. You have to take it on a case by case basis...

The non-word "weeaboo" though... wow, has it come a long way. From gibberish in a comic, to a wordfilter for wapanese, now meaning anything from Japanophile to fanboy. If it keeps this trajectory it will soon mean otaku too, to more than it already does, and maybe it'll even encompass any kind of asian fandom. It used to be reserved for the narutard types who would insert Japanese words into their sentences and act like Japanese wannabes, usually with bad misconceptions about what real Japan is like. Now it's just a word used by trolls and otaku to cuss each other out, haha

People with narrow-minded mentality such as this always ticks me off. Oh well, not that it's affecting my paycheck or anything.

In any case, weaboos still should NOT complain because of the dual-audio availability to satisfy the weaboo within you. Even with the extra cost of casting English VAs, anime DVDs in general still cost less in US than in Japan itself. But you still had to outright say whatever you think to make people think more highly of you as some sort of a cultured prophet.

The anime is there for you to watch. Settle the hell down and shut the hell up.

The original voicetrack still being available doesn't change the fact that the dub isn't exactly perfect.

I've heard considerably worse stuff before, but in general the performance of western (be it American, European (I'm German myself and have to deal with dozens of earcancer dubs over here as well)) or whatever is abysmal. They completely fail at portraying as wide a range of emotion as the Japanese ones seem to do quite easily, so they tend to seem quite fake.

It's not just that, though. Often the editing/mixing is horrid, too. I mean, look at the trailer above. They basically talk to each other like they're standing in a small room together. The original dub had them barking orders loudly, but at accordingly lower volume. It sorta gave me the feeling that the voice actors aren't allowed to yell in the recording studio. Which is weird.
