Japan’s hikikomori population now has the dubious distinction of having inspired an overseas horror movie, “Haunted Room.”

A widespread phenomena of a strange symptom is happening to teenagers all over Japan.
They shut themselves alone in a room, not going to school, to work, or even seeing family, some without leaving their room for 9 years.
They are called ‘Hikikomori.’
The film itself will apparently be airing in Thai cinemas come April.
Murderous hikikomori are unfortunately not not unheard of – obsessive behaviour, strong emotions and dependence on family make for a powerful admixture whether in fiction or real life.

Lol, this movie seems ridiculous. I doubt most Hikikomori are even that creepy. They seem misguided more then anything. And if mental illness is indeed involved, then this movie is just further reinforcing negative stereotypes about mental illness.

i think the premise of the movie is that the hikikomori son is possesed by a murderous spirit/ghost/etc... or else there's no point in calling a it the ""haunted" reem"

Umm I think the twist is that in the end the one who lives in that room isn't her son at all. She's been feeding some stranger serial killer guy who took her son's place all these time without realizing it.
No, that would make too much sense. Remember, it's supposed to be an horror movie. It's probably some alien that infiltrated her son or something. Maybe her son was dead all along and it's really a ghost story. Or the mother is sick and imagines having a son, which she does not. That would make her the real culprit. Or wait, maybe it's really her son, but he thinks of himself as a woman. So many possibilities,....
I still think the only reason to watch this movie is to make fun of it. Same reason I watched (=skipped through) One Piece and Bleach.

I don't get the problem with hiki's... just STOP FEEDING THE NOOBS!
The problem is
1) Most hikkis are not happy, they just feel safer hiding in their rooms.
2) They leech off their parents, emotionally blackmailing them into taking care of them, almost like parasites
3) Once their parents die, they have no way of taking care of themselves.
It's far better to help hikkis become less afraid and actually self-sufficient, than to let them make their family miserable and then kill themselves when they no longer can be taken care of.

I have to wonder what makes hikikomori-ism in any way different from clinical depression... It really sounds like new clothes on an old problem.
It's more like hardcore social anxiety. Depression is just a subproduct of the situation.
The difference is that hikikomori's parents allow them to get away with just sitting around in there room and not forcing them out and getting them help

Well, it would be a good movie if in the end everyone gets trolled; the door is opened and inside there's just your standard otaku room full of figures and posters and some random guy fapping to a VN while eating ramen and farming MMO gold in a second PC. Super scary!
This might be fun to watch. Not recommended if you are a mother of a hikikomuri because strange thoughts might come to your mind.

Then a failed suicide attempt, that would bring him to a hospital and after that he would try to get to society - allone
(it would be too unrealistic if he had help be someone)
An otaku horror movie would be that his parents would throw out his figures/DVDs/mangas/games/PS3/tengas/oppai_mousepads... and they would try to get him back to society
- there could be two plots
1) either he would kill everybody or
2) he would have success and would get a girlfriend then marry, he would work and she would manage all his income, but at least they would have sex (sometimes)

Most of the time it's the "normal" people who are the crazies. Doctors, civil servants, police man/woman, a mother, a father, jealous gf, and other. So why not add a hikki to spice things up eh?

I think the mommy's crazy, I wouldn't be suprised to see an ending where he son's already dead and she just kept him in the room, while still treting him as if he were alive.
It would be kind of cliche though...
He died in there all that remains now is a vengeful ghost.
Really though you'd think to kick the door down and throw in a bees nest to get him out of there after a week or two.
You know so he doesn't die in there and starts smelling up the place.

plot summary Spoiled Alert!!
- the son died and mother cannot accept the reality so she joined some ESP-religion group and with this some how she can create some ESP creature, similar to gollum in LOTR, by her ESP power and think it her son. This ESP creature enjoy the role as hikikomori son and lock itelves in the room play online game and kill every one that what to know what is inside the room.
at the end of story it kill "school-rumble cosplay woman" and hurt its mother to coma status and vanishing from story. as a result "school-rumble cosplay woman" 's mother join the same ESP-religion group and create her own ESP creature daugther.
