@The Nemesis discussion on the Rail Gun

It's actually the second movie, Resident Evil: Apocalypse

The DVD extras actually have information on it.
Holds 3000 rounds, the real thing fires 6000/min (they modified the one in the movie to half that, made it lighter, cut the barrel size, and added some extra aluminum frame).
So the real thing fires a round every 10ms.
For what it's worth, assuming Wikipedia's information and the 60I frame rate, there is a new frame about every 33ms; You could speculate that could be relevant to why they cut the fire rate in half bumping that to a shot every 20ms... That, or the fact that they'd run out of ammo after 30s of firing the thing. heh

no they are not, handguns provide auxiliary usefulness when you dont have time to reload. So are bayonets, AK-47s are still armed with bayonets for close quarter stabbing, if you know when to stab that is...

    Comment by Anonymous
    14:32 13/03/2010 # ! Neutral (+0.2)

riffle bayonets are useful, but i don't think they are standard issue anymore.

On a pistol, its better to just shoot them, or reach for your combat knife.

Pistols aren't however, standard issue ether. I think only officers and specialized forces have them. Your average grunt only has his or her rifle.

    Comment by Anonymous
    17:41 13/03/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

Any weapon with a fixed bayonet is useless. The bayonet throws off the centre of gravity which makes aiming hard. Usually the bayonet is fixed prior to entering close combat.

Most rifles today still have option of fixing the bayonet. Other than newer bullpup models. A rifle butt from a fully loaded bullpup rifle is definite to give you a jaw dislocation if that do not knock you out cold.

    17:45 13/03/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

Bayonets and combat knives are usually similar. Depending on the service rifles, both M16 and AK47s will be issued with bayonets.

Pistols are not standard issue. Usually dependent on the soldier's vocation.

Bayonets have three purposes these days:

    1) Poking bodies to make sure they're not playing possum.

    2) Prodding the ground if infantry have to breach a minefield (because there are never enough MiCLiCs for everyone, and guess who goes without?)

    3) Opening cans.

Thinking they can do anything else comes from playing too much counter-strike.

That said, about half those weapons are real, and have been used. Some were very effective.

Last checked, gun blades do exist. In the form of flintlock pistols and usually at the lengths of daggers or slightly longer. Considering the weapon designs, they should be only for officers as a self defense weapon.

Some of the really goofy shaped swords/knives are actually designed to be thrown.

The large mass of the blade puts the center of gravity there, and the shape of the blades sets it up so that when thrown it will almost always hit with one of the edges and almost never hit with the handle.

Anyway, you don't need great accuracy whan your target is a whole city, as was the case during the siege of Sevastopol, where they were great to flatten street blocks one at a time. Other than to make piles of rubble (or is it rubles there?) they weren't very useful, except as excellent propaganda material (on the phallic "mine-is-bigger-than-yours" way...)

025 was a IS-2 tank for Monument to Soviet Tank Crews. It got vandalised and painted pink by someone called David Černý, and is removed to Lešany military muzeum instead.

062 is a Sherman "Easy Eight" with a tiger face to scare the communists in Korean War.

063 are Goliath - German remote controlled explosive devices.

069 is a captured Japanese Te-ke tankette sitting on the back of a US Sherman tank.

073, 074, 075 are the German Schwerer Gustav railway gun (largest gun ever made in history). Aka Dora as a second gun was built as well, but apparently never used.

076 is a German Krupp K5 railway gun. This one in picture is one captured by Americans in Italy.

078 is *apparently* real; it's said to be some silencer for mobile artillery. In this case it is a M109 Paladin under Bundeswehr (German army).

081 is British Vickers A1E1 Independent multi-turreted tank. The British never used it, but it did inspired the Russians to make their own during WW2.

    084 is a German Sturmtiger.

087 is a German Möbelwagen anti-aircraft tank, with all plates raised up into a box-like position for transport.

091 is a Russian anti-tank dog (aka dog mine).

104 is an American Twin Mustang.

What is #97? Is that the Japanese battleship "Kirishima?" IIRC the "Kirishima" had a VERY tall forward bridge. Her wreck was discovered by Robert Ballard near Guadalcanal in Iron-Bottom Sound. The amazing thing is that she's over a mile down and she's flipped over. All other ships which have capsized in deep water (eg. "Bismarck") ended up righting themselves and settling upright, but not the "Kirishima." Allegedly the best theory is that she was so topheavy that she just failed to flip back over and settled upside-down.
    Any ideas?

#97 is not Kirishima; it's either Fuso or Yamashiro, both sunk at Surigao Strait in the Philippines. The "pagoda" masts that make it look top-heavy were there to support very large range-finders. Japanese optics were the best in the world at the time, but secret. This is a big reason why Japanese cameras were so successful so soon after the war.

It's Fuso. I can tell by the shape of the superstructure. Yamashiro has more support post on the superstructure than Fuso.

What's fun with the little "Goliath" is that i probably was on of the first battlefield uses of remote controlled devices (via wire, nothing as fancy as bluetooth, folks) and even if it was a little "fragile" it was a great way to carry a demolition charge up to 100kg. When I say fragile I mean that any shot it recieved (even small arms) could explode it or put it out of use (no transistors mean big fragile light bulbs, so it's like shooting a big box with an old TV set inside).

Anyway, that was the "nec plus ultra" of remotely controlled ground weapons, but then you had the russians with their own cheap and easy even-better-than-remote-control explosive weapon, the automatic homing explosive biologic weapon.
Those were the quite easy steps:
    - Take a stray dog (cheaper than breeding it).
    - Keep it always a little starved.
    - Train it to endure a backpack with explosives when you feed it, and ONLY feed it when under a tank (with the engines working for it to learn not to be afraid of the noise and odors).
    - Rinse and repeat to create in its mind the Pavlovian reflex you're looking for (Tank + backpack = lunch time... BTW, remember that Pavlov was Russian, so perhaps they've always been in advance in those areas)
    - Wait for Fritz to show the tips of his panzers.
    - Watch that none of your tanks are in the vicinity, then put the backpack on your automatic homing device that happily goes to the final lunch it's not going to get...
    - Enjoy the fireworks (if you don't, you're doing the wrong job here).
    - Repeat until the end of the war (and use more German stray dogs for "poetic" guro-justice as you near Berlin).

As every one can see, the most expensive part of this training is having a working tank to make the practices, but we are talking here about the soviet army at war, and nobody else in the World had more and cheaper tanks to lend you some for your training sessions.

Not to mention the Soviet teletank radio controlled tanks developed in the 30s. Working in conjunction with a controller tank, the teletank could operate 1.5km ahead of the controller tank, laying down smoke, using chemical weapons, dropping explosives, or using a flame thrower. Teletanks were used in the Winter War, but stripped of their radio equipment and used as normal tanks in the Great Patriotic War.

073,074,075 This gun fired a 7-ton shell. It needed a double track to move. Essentially it was a boondoggle sold by Krupp to the German Army to smooth its ruffled feathers from World War I, when the most famous cannon of that war, the Paris Gun, was operated by the German Navy.

The gun has had an interesting fictional life. Harry Turtledove uses it against an alien invasion in the first of the WorldWar books, and a replica appears in Gunnm/Battle Angel Alita.

104 The Twin Mustang was actually produced as the F-82 and holds the distinction of shooting down the first Communist plane in the Korean War.

for those who are interested in it, #83 text says:
"A picture which portrays a parachutist (in Pievebelvicino or somewhere near the place) in a curious pose: probably it's nothing but a soldiers' prank, who harnessed the animal in a "armored-donkey-like fashion", assembling an antitank Panzerfaust 60 (with protective shield taken from a Panzershreck 54), a (probably not working) radio and an antenna on it.
Dionisio Filippi is certain he's recognized the soldier: as far as he remembers, that was one of the most lively soldiers, who was into doing pranks at other soldiers or at civilians, often going to Pieve a Torre, to find himself some women, properly perfumed and dressed up.

008 is a late-19th-century Saturday Night Special; the most popular one was called "My Friend" and you can find advertisements for it in old magazines and newspapers. More likely to injure the shooter than the target.

019 looks like a comparison of the .45 Colt and a monster revolver designed to fire .45-70 Springfield cartridges, the same as used by Custer's men in their carbines.

020 is a Colt Revolving Rifle, cap-and-ball. It was never popular because hot gas would flare out between the cylinder and the barrel every time it was fired, right into the shooter's face.

040 is a German Stg-44 modified to fire around corners or over the armored sides of a half-track. The thing mounted over the barrel is a periscope so the soldier might actually aim the thing. The barrel wore out quickly.

041 is a modern Russian antitank missile launcher. I'm guessing the lower thingie with a lens cap is probably a laser target designator.

057 Segway really is trying to make military sales, but even heavily armed, anyone on a Segway is still a dork.

066 This is a British bright idea that didn't work, a bomb on wheels. The tubes on the wheels are rockets!

081 A Russian T-28. Multi-turret tanks like this were a fad between the wars, but they were slow and thinly-armored.

    085 A Panzer I with a 15cm infantry gun.

087 This is a Panzer IV chassis with a 37-mm antiaircraft gun. The sides of the "box" on the top would usually be dropped when it was firing.

098 This is the Japanese aircraft carrier Kaga before it was rebuilt with a single flight deck. Later it participated in the Pearl Harbor attack. The extra flight decks were to allow planes to launch directly from the hangar deck--which is actually something some American carriers of World War II could also do, using a hangar-deck catapult.

100 This is the very first aircraft carrier to launch an air strike, HMS Furious, in World War I. It was rebuilt for the next war.

101 Either HMS Nelson or HMS Rodney; the latter helped sink the Bismarck. They were built to this weird-looking design to save weight in order to conform to the limits of the 1922 Washington Naval Treaty, the very first agreement to limit armaments. Most heavily-armed battleships on Earth when built.

    103 Not a gag; it's an electronic intelligence version of a C-135.

(And yes, the photo of the little Japanese tankette sitting on the rear deck of the American M4 Sherman is REAL - the guy standing in front of the Sherman is the tank commander.)

In case anyone wondering, Those Hello Kitty designed assault rifles and pistol are REAL! It seems to cause the California Law enforcement quite a problem. they can't tell distinguish if it's real or a toy.

Thanks for telling me that. I have yet to see a decent or good Malaysian martial art movie in my whole life.

Actually, Merantau is an Indonesian movie. Indonesia also never had a decent martial art movie until this.

And by "our", I mean fellow Indonesians, mind you.
