Wasn't the Haruhi movie released in 2010, a month ago?
How about Gundam W:Endless Walts?
And nanoha's movie? But well, talking from the season view they're still in spring'09 area.
how the Fucjk did up get in the list???
I like how evengelion is top on this list, as everywhere else summer wars was above it. I am very amused
Up was awesome fool.
because PIXAR RULES, even in Japan. In '08 Wall·E was in the top of the animated movies for MONTHS.
Up is actually surprisingly deep, kind of like the original Alice in Wonderland story, since both have hidden mature themes even though they're both aimed at children.
Don't even joke about Gundam Wing being good for anything other than Tallgeese.
I see some do thumbs down on comments about "Up"; stop that.
IT'S ACTUALLY NOT A TROLL. Remember, Japanese call all of the animated movies "anime", thus it can be on the list if the sales are high enough.
Actually, the Haruhi Movie, Macross Movie and Nanoha movie are all 2010 movies...
Nope. It is actually part of 2009. (Spring of last year to Winter 2010)
"...top animated movies of (fiscal) 2009"
Which really encompasses from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010
Which makes this list even weirder, as it is still march.
Is this the second gurren movie?
Gawd that was epic!
All is right with the world...
Yes, I almost cried with its awesome...
lol your pic matches with your comment
I think I can safely disregard this poll as utter retardation since they apparently count eve check the release date for several movies.
Was probably fiscal 2009.
Yep... Kinda weird...
yeah! not only haruhi, also nanoha both we're 2010 movies, why is it in the 2009 list?
Because if they only included 2009,
position 1 to 6 would be taken by Summer Wars XD
In actual fact, this season is still counted as Winter 2009 instead of 2010 as their spring season starts in april where Spring 2010 officially arrives. Therefore this may be the reason that the movies released early this year is placed in 2009.
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/fiscal_year
"Wasn't the Haruhi movie released in 2010, a month ago?"
Yes, but these are the top movies of the fiscal year, not the calendar year. It varies by country, but in Japan's case the fiscal year runs from April 1st to March 31st.
lol, Up. I am not surprised about Kara no Kyokai 7 as last.
I am, that movie was great. Not bombastic but stylish and incredibly directed. On the other hand its last from series of movies that isnt for everybody, who didnt liked previous movies woudnt go to this one...
I'm surprised it's on the list. In fact, I consider 6th one the best out of them all. So what? Tastes differ, you know.
I think it should be higher up. I loved all of the Kara no Kyoukai Movies though, and put together, they are a fantastic series.
wohoo nanoha is so high.Seen only 9 on that list anyway.
I agree with the list. Seen the Evangelion movie in my local cinemas and it definitely deserves the top spot.
I wouldn't have written an 8000 word review of the movie if it weren't deserving of it.
Cheers to the Macross Movie, Nanoha Movie, Haruhi Movie, Gurren Lagann Movie and Summer Wars.
you wrote an 8000 word review? talk about obsession...
anyway, since it's an eva movie, must've been good. (haven't seen it yet)
Since when were Pixar movies anime?
In Japan anything animated is "anime."
besides... Up was pretty Badass.
I was kinda disappointed in Up. I used to enjoy Disney movies, but lately they seem to be more like tech demos for Disney. Alladin is still my Fav Disney cartoon since he was so bad ass to me.
I wasn't aware Pixar is Disney. O_o Hasn't Pixar always made 3D movies?
Pixar has always made 3D movies, yes. Also, Pixar is owned by Disney.
A lot of people don't realize that's just the Japanese word for animation. When they talk about what we call anime they probably say something like 和製アニメ.
Actually I think they still just call it anime when it's pretty clear from the context.
Too bad Sunao Katabuchi's MAI MAI MIRACLE (マイマイ新子と千年の魔法, Maimai Shinko to Sen-nen no Mahō, lit. Mai Mai Shinko and the Millennium-Old Magic) isn't listed; I saw it at a festival and I loved it but I like simple slice-of-life stories.

wow didn't realise the Vesperia movie was out.
knk 7 is a very good movie, but it's far from paradox spiral level(the 5th movie). Actually, really like the eva 2.0. It deserves the 1st position (but it isn't like the movies in the list are the only good ones to be released last year/this year)
Havent watched the Eva or the Haruhi movie and I randomly downloaded Summer Wars. I am a little surprised at Up though.
Other than the ones mentioned above I didn't really know they were produced. Probably cause I stick to my TV series
Summer Wars was Digimon the movie + Meet the Fockers.
ROFL!!!
Macross Frontier has been scoring pretty damn high in all these polls.
'bout fucking time.
Me wants subbed MacrossF movie...
Yep! Do Want!
Was evangelion really that great? I saw the first one, and while it looked pretty, it didn't really blow me away.
When will (Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance) Come to DVD? It feels like years I have been waiting and it still isn't out..... I MUST SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!
Where the hell is Avatar in all this
The 2% live action in Avatar disqualified it. Still an awesome movie though.
There is no way Avatar counts as a animation film.
And Summer Wars, while good, is not really great. Much over-rated
I haven't seen it yet. Would you say it is at least worth a buy for $20 or so?
If you like the director, yes, definitely. Support the industry.
Personally, its not that good for me to warrant getting a physical copy though
Totally agreed. Summer war still not good enough to be ranked 2nd.
Gurren Lagann should be replaced it.
Eva being 1st is no surprise, but Up falling behind movies like Nanoha and Vesperia is downright pitiful. That movie was amazing, with a character development that is few and far between and chemistry between the two protagonists that simply delights any audience, regardless of weather you are an academic looking for artistic legitimacy or an average moviegoer simply eager to embrace a colorful, captivating romp.
You know, assuming that this is running off the fiscal season then Haruhi and Nanoha did really well considering their late release dates.
Nice Up !!!
Summer Wars definitely goes in my top 5.
A movie for what it is, visual story telling.
It easily edges out NGE and Haruhi in my eyes.
I wish there was a way to keep yourself from posting as Anon...
okay first of all, UP! is not an anime movie, and second of all, if UP! is on this list, it should be at the top.
Up is animated, isn't it? In Japan anime encompasses all forms of animation. So, you're quite wrong about Up not being anime.
yeah. misconception there dude. In Japan, all animations are anime to them. What the we called anime is the japanese equivalent of.................shit, forgot the word.
"C-ca-cartoons! There all cartoons, and at your age! " - Hysterical parents.
But yes, eitherway Up was a good film.
UP by all description is still animation hence deserve that spot.
That Asuka up there is Tony's, right? Hot damn!
No Eden? WTF
WTF WHERES EDEN?!!!!!!
To me, Up and Macross are easily better than any of these. And yes, I watched them all.
wow Up ranks in that list? impressive.
I REALLY loved UP? but I SERIOUSLY don't want it corroding this list.. -_- Yeah its an animation, but, THAT anime, is nothing compared to THE anime we all watch!! Bah!! I watched 6 of the movies on the list, and in my opinion, the list is kinda messed up.. I get why Eva 2.0 is first, I agree to that, Summer Wars was goodishly great? but eh.... 2nd? I don't think its THAT deserving.. and Gurren Lagann 9th?? Shoushitsu 6th?!?! psh...
Where the fuck is Fate Stay Night :UBW?????????????
I haven't watched it yet, but according to what I've heard, it's kind of dissapointing, which would explain why it's not on the list. And frankly, I'm not surprised. Trying to cram all of UBW into a 90 minute anime movie? I don't think so...
Nice Cameltoe in the pic
Eva and Summer Wars nice..
Guess they love Yoshiyuki Sadamoto art?
Yes! Evangelion 2.0 so deserves this.
UBW..sniffs
I'l just refer you to my post a few posts up.
Not surprised by the ranking.
Evangelion 2.0 and Summer Wars were always contenders for the top 2 spot, though this is the first time I've seen Eva 2.0 beating Summer Wars. Maybe Dengeki's overseas subscribers helped tipped the scales in Eva 2.0's favour? Considering Summer Wars has yet to be shown outside Japan.
The influence of anime in Japan itself is plain to see as Oscar-winning "Up" only ranked 8th in Top 10 Animated movies of the year.
(I guess this should also be considered as a compliment for Pixar, with its meaningful and actually quite mature stories alongside its CG animation skills managing to break into the anime dominated Japanese market. )
what about 'Ponyo on the cliff by the sea'?
(hayao miyazaki)
That's from 2008.
Evangelion it's just retelling the same crap story from some 15 years ago again!
And it's still one of the best stories ever told despite being 15 years old. And I say "despite" because you seem to think it is a bad thing, personally, I think many of the oldest stories of humanity are among the best ever.
Oh, no. Please don't tell me Kara no Kyoukai 7 is below the likes of One Piece and some Pixar shit I've never even heard of.
If you haven't heard of UP, then that's your problem. It is actually a very good movie. That said, I too would have liked Kara no Kyoukai to rank above it, as I love the movie, and all the other 6 movies in the series as well, though to be honest the 5th movie is perhaps even better than the 7th.
My only problem with the position of the Haruhi movie is that Macross F is above it. I will reserve my impression of the Macross F movie though, since I haven't seen it, but if it's anything like the last third of the television series, I will most likely despise it.
