Virtual idol Hatsune Miku’s latest live performance, “Miku’s Day,” has proven a huge success, with otaku attendees enthusiastically queueing by the the thousand and being driven into a frenzy by the spectacular performance the Vocaloids offered.
One particularly obsessive fan reported a virtual epiphany…
Miku and the Vocaloids appeared on stage by way of a transparent screen:
One 2ch denizen attended the Miku Live event together with 2,499 other creepy otaku (and thousands more in virtual attendance via Nico), and was evidently deeply moved by the experience:
It was nothing like it looked on Nico.
It was like Miku was actually there, in front of you. What’s real and what’s an optical illusion, it was hard to tell.
She was glittering amidst the smoke and lights – it was especially nice how she used the smoke to change costumes.

You see, I'm a computer scientist. I got my first computer when I was ten; it would choke and limp for an hour to draw a simple 3D senoid... But move forward a mere twenty years, and fully animated 3D idols are dancing in front of a live crowd. To think that such progress was made in such a short time fills my heart with joy and hope for the future.
That's why, when I saw the videos, I also felt like crying a little. To think such beauty is already possible, so early in my lifetime... That indeed, the frontier between material and virtual is beginning to get blurred. And so the promise living within the heart of Machine inches ever so slightly closer to its realization...

They do not fall anywhere near uncanny valley, are you sure you watched the video you linked yourself? Vocaloid characters during the live are still stylized and enhanced realism through high polygon, movements, and effects they achieved through lighting and transparent projector screen technology they used.
This is why the world can't take Japan seriously.

The fact that Rin, Len, and Luka were included in this makes the concert even more epic....although I would like to see some Kaito, Meiko, Gumi, and Gakupo just to see how they would look on screen, especially Meiko I wonder how she would look in her outfit?.........(dreaming)

I think people are forgetting that Miku's voice is that of a real person, Fujita Saki. I wonder if they did the concert by just recycling her old voice samples, if they recorded new ones just for the concert, or if (this would have been interesting but unlikely), she was singing through a voice processor live.

I really don't get Nico. Most people I know ignore or even block (there's a plugin for that) YouTube comments. On Nico, the comments are even more stupid (I submit the images in this article as evidence), often duplicates and overlap the viewing area where they're harder to ignore. Sometimes the video itself is impossible to see and you can do nothing but wait until the inane and nigh illegible comments have streamed past. Why do people choose to undergo that experience?
You can turn the comments off on Nico if you want to actually watch the video instead of reading the inane ramblings of jackasses. There's a lil button for it on the video bar near the volume slider, it looks like a word bubble.

CNN didn't have anything even close to holographic.
It's just a simple video trick.
There were cameras around the correspondent and that was used to show her from all sides. Then, all they had to do was tell the computer which camera view to use based on which angle the studio cameras had.
