Final Fantasy XIII Xbox 360 “18GB” vs PS3 “38GB”

chibi-lightning-by-karin.jpg

The Xbox 360 port of Final Fantasy XIII has been confirmed as being almost half the size of the PS3 version, coming in at 18GB on 3 DVDs versus 38GB on one BD, far smaller than expected.

The comparison comes by way of review copy:

Disc 1: 5.9GB
Disc 2: 5.8GB
Disc 3: 6.6GB

Total: 18.3GB

Xbox owners will likely be hoping careful movie compression will limit the difference, but obtaining over 50% compression without a significant loss in movie quality is not very likely.

More problematically, preliminary reports are already showing actual in-game graphics have suffered on the Xbox 360, far from reassuring news for what was supposed to be an “absolutely identical” port.

    So?

A bad game loses its sole selling point when ported to a new console. Big whoop. No matter what console it's on, Final Fantasy XIII is a rigid, linear game that makes the actual game parts feel superfluous.

I wonder if the game-breaking bugs that plague the PS3 version will be fixed.

Completed the game a few weeks back, and I'll have to say that the storyline presentation and challenge provided in battles (which I hope they don't tone down for the US version) is enough to make it a very playable game.

The map is quite linear, I do miss having an entire world map to explore and having the need to find places to progress the storyline, but in exchange you'd always know what to do and where to go to.

This will suck for xbox arcade owners...I think microsoft wanted this game because they saw dollar signs in it......large size + reputable game with large fan base = sells on overpriced microsoft hdd's. I own a 360 elite and a ps3 slim (120gb)and I must say my ps3 is far superior to my 360. I purchased my ps3 first (2 years prior) so when I bought my 360 I had higher expectation's (like an internal wireless card at least). I think I will buy this game for the ps3 to test it out. I have heard mixed reviews as I did with WKC but I bought WKC and love it.

I never even post in comment sections of websites. But I have to say. I am a true Final Fantasy fan. I have played all of them. And not just after 10 came out and everyone started jumping on the bandwagon. I played 7 and it was wonderful. Story, plot, side quests, characters, everything. The same for 8,9,10. 8 was a little boring but 10 was outstanding. Anyone who really appreciated FF knows X was everything you could want in an RPG. 11 was wack and 12 was like 11 without the online play. FF13 is another step down from 12 in my opinion. Yeah the music queues up in the beginning and is enchanting but the story and characters, I can't connect with them like 7 and 10. Where you actually cared about what happens to them. They tried to create a female cloud and use graphics and systems comparable to FFX but failed on story, characters, and overall plot. No suspense to get to that next aeon. Or the thrill of facing off against sephiroth. What about the urge to venture into the open world and find wonderful ultimate weapons and armor. Why do you think everyone keeps hating on FF 11 12 and 13. Because the story was lame, the characters are stupid and not important. I haven't felt like staying up and playing all night since X. At this point I am just waiting for Square to remaster 7 in HD and even X too. As far as the Final Fantasy name goes, I hate to say it but I won't just buy it anymore based on it's title.

The game is only Linear until the end being you are running from Cocoon. Can't really go around in towns and cities and shop and explore when there is a militaristic people that view you as danger there. Also I'm sure they wouldn't want to have the Purge happen to them as well. So for the time being you are on the run until most of it is dealt with. The PSI-OP were right on their tail the entire time. As you can see by every time they stopped for a moment to breathe, Low and behold PSI-OP catches up to assassinate them.

Just a bunch of whiney otaku bashing on a console for it's lack of what you want on it due to Playstation's monopoly over all the (not going to say good) mediocre games like Final Fantasy.

Quit bashing something for the purpose of bashing it and go sit contently with your little PS3 version. Unless of course you own a 360 and are just butthurt over a developer halfassing the game on your console.

You must not have played the other Final Fantasy titles. I agree the game does not suck as much as everyone says. But most dedicated fans have to come to appreciate Final Fantasy for what it is, not for what it could be one day. Almost all other FF games involve a gripping story, and characters. The ability to roam through an immense world and a myriad of side quests for weapons, armor, and magical moments. You really cared what happened to the characters and how they progressed. In 13 they stick you right in the middle of a confusing story and never really let you make the quest your own. It reminded me of playing sonic the hedgehog, where the backgrounds look amazing but the actual game play was boring and you just grind through to get to the next let down. After about 25 hours, I didn't care who had what weapon, I just leveled everyone up equally and optimized the best equipment. Not the way I would ever play a Final Fantasy. I just don't understand if they're going to make a game so different than what fans have come to love, than why not call this something else. Why shovel shit and call it sugar.

Reducing the resolution isn't going to save on disc space. Unless they drastically dropped the texture quality (to the point where the game wasn't even comparable, and it doesn't look quite THAT bad) then yes, the size difference will be reduced movie and sound quality. The 360 version's movies are in 720p (1280x720) compared to the PS3 version's movies which are in 1080p (1920x1080). Add to that the fact that the PS3 version will most likely have uncompressed sound compared to the 360 version's Dolby Digital, and consider that FMV and sound usually take up most of the space in any game, and it's not hard to see where the space savings come from.

FF13 is hardly the first game to do this, either.

That kind of downsampling on the video and sound files, in a game that's practically an interactive movie (barely above stuff like Heavy Rain), is already enough to reach the 18 GB mark, no additional texture compression necessary. Many 360 games have just as many textures as FF XIII, and some of them may look even better. If there's any kind of limitation in that respect, it definitely has to do with Squeer Enix doing a rushed job... on what already seems to be a rushed game no less, lol.

the ps3 does have better graphics, which is most likely due to a higher texture resolution.

and texture do take a lot of space. even if they're s3tc/dxtc compressed.
just have a look at the hires texture packs available for some rpgs, they can easily be several gbs large. even for a not-so-recent game like oblivion, the community hires texture addon is 2gb.

I'm going to make this easy for all of you before the PS3vsXbox360 arguments get posted like wildfire here.
    PS3:
    1) Great graphics
    2) Single Disk so no Disc Switching
    3) Will most likely have a HDD install.
    4) Best of the 2 consoles in terms of graphics and gameplay immersion
    Xbox360:
    1) Most people have a Xbox360 in the U.S. at least, so you'll get to play a usually Sony only game
    2) Will most likely have some sort of HDD install
    3) Is FULLY piratable, so you cheapos out there will most likely flood TPB, ISoHunt or whatever you use.
    4) Xbox360 controller>PS3 Sixaxxis/DualShock 3, just fukken admit it, it's an awesome controller Sony fans. Even PC users like the damn thing and that's saying something considering the whole KB/M arguments.
Either way, graphics don't make or break a game at least to me. A great storyline, great characters, and awesome gameplay matter more than oh LOOK!! It's shinier!!! However great graphics are most definitely a plus. However considering the opinion that Sankaku-ites(?) hold here, what does it matter right? Hell, even Artefact's opinion has been less than stellar.

So you say that Bayonetta sucks on ps3 because ps3 sucks. Bayonetta sucks on ps3 because sega sucked porting it, not a limitation of the ps3 hardware wich can provide us quality graphics like Uncharted 2. But will you say that FFXIII sucks on xbox360 because Enix suck? It sucks because xbox360 lacks on media space. xbox 360 is shiting game development, they already blocked FFXIII development and they are doing the same with Lost Planet 2, for how long do you think 360 will survive?

The comment never said that Bayonetta or the PS3 sucked due to the reasons you posted. If I'm not mistaken; The post I believe you're referring to already acknowledged the fact that Sega did a terrible job porting the game over to PS3. They were merely inferring that the criticism the two FFXIII versions are receiving will rival - if not surpass - the criticism Bayonetta received upon release.

The only hate present in the post is the minor quip about FFXIII being a marathon, and the more obvious hate towards the broken Tales of Graces game.

    Not a big surprise.

SquareEnix games always have a crapload of movies. They have FMVs for introductory scenes, action scenes, pretty much anything they think could look just a bit more awesome. I imagine that at least half of the game's size on the PS3 is completely uncompressed video and audio.

You can save a LOT of space with compression and in the good cases, the loss of quality will be minimal in the case of video and unnoticeable to anyone but an audiophile with incredible hearing.

My main worry is that the game will have slowdown or glitches from a poor port. SquareEnix knows the Xbox360 pretty well by now, I should think. As long reviews indicate I don't have to deal with "Bayonetta PS3 Pre-Patch"-levels of loading times and the framerate remains fairly consistent, I'll be picking this one up on Xbo360. Graphics and audio aren't such a holy grail to me that I have to see the devs push the system every new game I pick up, so gameplay and content being equal I'll pick the controller which doesn't give my hands cramps after a couple hours of play.

    Get your facts straight?
No HDD install for FFXIII on the PS3.

And no, controller preference is just that.. preference. I prefer xbox controller for FPS and Dual Shock 3 for everything else.

It reflects really poorly on the 360, but it's totally the dev's fault here. Unfortunately, that won't stop people from saying that the 360 sucks because FFXIII looks better on the PS3.

SPOILER ALERT: Square-Enix and Sony planned this from the start.

I would ussually say that this is the devs fault too, but it wasn't meant for the 360. It's a port; it's not going to be as good. I also don't have any reason to believe that SQEnix and Sony planned this. That would make not sense. SqEnix wants to make money, and they're not going to get it from a bad product.

Audio, video, and textures are always the biggest things when uncompressed. They're the obvious targets for cutting size quickly.

    @00:21
Textures are limited by the vram unit of the Console anyways. If you think the BluRay is packed with HIGH quality textures, then you're dead wrong. The vram Unit of the PS3 or 360 can't handle High res textures. Just look at the Half Life² Cinematic Mod. The best PC is just enough to handle them Photorealistic textures and they dont take up 40GB >_>

I agree with the Audio and Video part though. My guess is, that the Videos for the PS3 version are FullHD like 1080i and the 360 is running only 720i. I think the PS3 version has uncompressed audio as well...

I suppose it's safe to assume with the rise of hate in superiority differences between the two versions released; that this game will reach the same level of infamy that the PS3 Bayonetta port did.
However, despite the poor port on Sega's behalf - Bayonetta was still awesome. FFXIII - no matter the console - will still be a long marathon. At the very least it's not a broken game like Tales of Disgrac...I mean Tales of Graces.

I'm not judging something I haven't played. I properly imported the title only to find myself dragging my feet to finish the game. You'll see when you get to play the game just how much of a chore it is to complete the story up to Gran Pulse. Only when you're given the freedom to explore and take-up side-quests does FFXIII become enjoyable.

A thought crossed my mind the other day. About the whole "towns were too much of a pain in the ass to program for the ps3" thing, got me wondering how FF XIV will turn out, being as it an mmorpg and all.. (sorry. kinda off the subject a little there)

Discs would probably be for a single use as you go through the game. One for "gameplay", the next purely for video. "Yay, almost time to swap dis- RRoD..."
Another FF13 article just reminds me: Vanille doujins nao.

Maybe it just proves how ridiculously complex the PS3 coding version for the game is?

(remember people - FFXIII was initially supposed to be made for PS2.)

Maybe it just proves how ridiculously is the quality of the videos of the Blue ray compared to a "normal" dvd. Or a normal dvd movie is better than a BD one, cause it have less gigs.

This article is wrong. I have all 3 FF13 DVD's and they weight in at about 23 gigs. Want proof? Go find the iso files for FF13 for the xbox. No matter where you find it or download it, its over 20 gigs.

And yeah, after playing the game on the 360, the graphics are better than any other game I have ever played. But all this bickering about graphics is stupid because THE GAME SUCKS BEYOND belief. Even if the graphics were way better (which is silly because they are already awesome) you'd get more fun using the DVD's as frisbee's than actually using them to play the game.

They should have made it into a 24 CD box set, releasing each CD slowly, along the same time line it takes to release each anime DVD.

As a bonus feature you get to see the map of FF13 when you line all 24 cd casings side by side when you have finished the collection.

I have owned and played the PS3 version.

So... in the PS3 Enix said that even if the story was boring and the game more straight than a ruler, it had rocking graphics and amazing videos... in the Xbox they are saying the graphics are not that amazing and the videos will lack the "holy crap that's good" factor?... jesus christ, really, I was going to post a comment like "then the FFXIII for the Xbox 360 is more useful as a cupholder or a frisbee for my dog" but this fact is just so sad... and I kind of feel pity for the people that made the game, I mean, their names on the credits are like a tribute to epic fail that'll last forever and haunt them on their nightmares.

I agree that FFX killed Final Fantasy, in fact I think it killed the whole jrpg genre. It's a horrible on-rails piece of shit with barely any game world content to speak of (remember it had like 2 fully explorable towns), and anyone who likes it should be fed to wild bears.

Thats just make me want to see wild bears look at you and thinking "i'm going to turn you into my poo"

From a developer or plot standpoint:
The game is only Linear until the end being you are running from Cocoon. Can't really go around in towns and cities and shop and explore when there is a militaristic people that view you as danger there. Also I'm sure they wouldn't want to have the Purge happen to them as well. So for the time being you are on the run until most of it is dealt with. The PSI-OP were right on their tail the entire time. As you can see by every time they stopped for a moment to breathe, Low and behold PSI-OP catches up to assassinate them.
