It is only a problem if the cat is bigger. The cat will try to wiggle free if it feels uncomfortable. The fact that it feels nonchalant says that it is ok will it. Cats do not put up with things that makes them feel less than comfortable. The kitten is light enough at the moment for it to be supported by just holding it so, but that might not be the case for a larger one.
I've seen many people pick up their cats under their armpits. You usually see them holding them from behind with two hands, but it is still being held by putting your hands under the cats armpits. Have you ever seen the original picture of longcat? Its not all that uncommon of a way to pick up your cat. And cats don't scratch or wriggle when being picked up like that so I'm sure its not uncomfortable. Lots of mammals are picked up by their armpits including children.
