Comment on Sea Shepherd to Attack Tuna Fishing Boats by Barbarian of Gor:

I think it’s unlikely Tuna itself would be fished to ‘extinction’ but many, many other fish would be. And the lack of the fish, along with the ecosystem disruption, would make it so that there was very few Tuna left for a very very long time, along with anything other than Algae and Jellyfish. They don’t reproduce that fast, they are predators, so a tiny population will take a very long time to restore itself to the massive growing population the oceans used to have. There are a few conservationists, even in Japan, holding some in tanks to study them, so if they did collapse in the wild they could be re-seeded, but the companies would run like mad, not help in any way. And there’d be lots of desperate, starving fishermen who only had the ships they stole to become pirates with and an international market that makes rare fish a prize catch…

Algae and Jellyfish could gain a strong foothold in the oceans, esp the latter with the worse depletion of shark.

What should be done is a quick push-back of fish allowed to be harvested, with strict enforcement. Then, after a reasonable ‘breathing room’ moratorium, strict but reasonable limits on harvesting. Anyone doesn’t like what they can catch, what’s available on the open market, they can get space off an island -or in my case build a seastead- and have an ‘aquaculture net’ where they raise their own fish, eat some, and sell the rest.

I’m all for eating fish. I just want to make sure I and mankind always have fish to eat. Hot Chinese lady I knew showed me all kinds of fancy recipies. It’s simply math that it’s a lot easier to solve the problem (possible destruction of majority of aqua ecosystem) by preventing it than by trying to repair some of the damage later.

Do any of you know why there’s a cost for a “Fishing License” and a daily limit of fish caught in USA rivers and lakes? Because the government has to re-grow and artificially replenish the stock of fish. The cost is more or less ‘at cost’ of the fish to artificially replenish what mankind had depleted to near extinction.

I really hope we can turn things around.

But, really, we could have a situation where somebody wants “Shark Fin Soup” but finds it’s easier to go on an “Underage Sex Tour”, far less expensive and risky due to shark being ‘nearly extinct in the wild’, he’s looking at tens of thousands of dollars. So he then buys a few tiny, sickly sharks from a trafficker for a couple thousand, and he sets up some huge tanks to raise the thing for years on meat scraps so he can have it just once. Then when he’s just about to have a feast, the UN and Fish and Wildlife department break in. One of his “friends” ‘ratted’ him since there was a $10K bounty, but they don’t really care about arresting him, just taking the sharks back because they are now “Extinct in the wild” and they need them to help get rid of the Jellyfish choking the oceans and preventing the ‘seed’ fisheries from recovering. So the sharks go in a tank, and the Marshall is being a generous guy (jails are full anyways) and gives him some papers to file for some tax relief as an ‘environmental hero’ for his costs raising Jaws Jr…

I love this!!! Have to send them some donations, help them out. Our oceans are being fished to collapse. We are going to lose a lot of species and it’ll take far longer for even the hardy species to recover than it would if right now mankind slapped some reasonable limits and measures on international fishing. An “Anon” upthread said that the companies would do everything to preserve what their profit base is from, the whales, the fish. That is a bold faced LIE that even the big companies don’t …

I’d advise attacking the people behind this law. Not literally, of course, but rather exposing them for what they are. You see, it goes all the way back to the “Dark Ages” (being western here, vely much wisdom, glasshoppa) good old days of face tumors, not bathing, constant bully knights fighting and beating peasants in between huns invading and plague and witch burning. The local authorities were turds and shit, excuse the “French” (who RUINED everything!)(1) but they were no good at any other …

I suggest do NOT get the X-Box. Here’s how you can affect the market: 1. Look up some providers to the X-Box, especially their “Only on” crowd. 2. Write a polite, concise letter why you will be skipping this model. 3. The letter is “Microsoft has patented using a Kinect to monitor people in the house for purposes of limiting the number of people watching Netflix, etc. I do not support that. I will skip this console.” Doing that, while Microsoft would laugh it off, a letter from a person forms a …

Hrrggg… Don’t get me wrong, I’m also quite “liberal” in that I don’t care about Loli stuff. Just the excess shocks me a bit. It’s like it’s becoming mandatory, and “Toddlercon” …uhh… is the new “Lolicon” or what-not. So the few things like this, like Queen’s Blade, Punky Knight, etc. are a breath of fresh air.

Hrrrgggg!!!! Woman! Wooommmannnn!!! I like this! Some of us actually don’t really want the “Rule 34″ model of a popular Japan fiction/game/whatever to look like a TEN YEAR OLD for just once in a while… I mean I’m against any loli ban/thought crime legislation and all that. But holy Fruit of the Gawdz (as in a favorite classic Hustler pictorial), it’s like Japan is Pedo bear paradise. Really, the art is more exaggerated/cartoony “Sword and Sorcery” artwork, check out like Frazetta, Boris, etc. …
