The fish is an Atlantic bluefin tuna, which is prized for sushi. It is estimated Japan consumes over 80% of the world's catch in bluefish tuna.
However, as overfishing has depleted worldwide bluefin tuna stock by more than 80% since the 1900s and the fish risks becoming endangered, European countries like France and Britain wants to put a global ban on bluefin tuna export.
You can imagine Japan being unhappy about that, since it'll mean other countries can't sell the tuna to them. So the MAD is rallying support for Japanese to oppose the ban.
