Lucky Star Ripped Off by Chinese

lucky-star-chinese-cm-1.jpg

Lucky Star has finally had the unwelcome honour of being ripped off for use on a Chinese public service advertisement.

lucky-star-chinese-cm-2.jpg

lucky-star-chinese-cm-3.jpg

Admittedly, about the only surprising thing about this is that it took so long.

Chinese otaku are apparently disgusted, but it seems no amount of disgust, internal or external, will discourage China from doing what it apparently does best.

Is there something wrong here? screw the people who ripped it off but you idiots need to stop blaming every thing that a group does on the whole country. otherwise, a lot of other countries should have crap reputations just like China.

Trolling racists. You'd do well to ignore them.

Yes, China does rip off a lot of things. But who exactly is doing so? Would the average Chinese citizen even know about Lucky Star - aside from the typical otaku?

Whenever you hear about these stories in China - be it stolen copyright material, shoddy construction work, or toxic materials in toys, 19 out of 20 times it's the decision of either a single individual or a small group of people. While not much can be done about foreign copyright, those who fall into the latter categories get executed if they're caught (and most flee to Canada or the US for just this reason).

Regardless, it's just ignorant to criticize an entire population for the acts of a few, especially when the population is as big as China's.

Apparently, the illustrator for this commercial is a part-time doujin artist called Zixia (紫 sounds feminine, so I'm gonna use "her"), who she claims was hired/coerced by the Party bigwigs for her skills.

Here is her confession (with rough translation)

    并西好好干好己工导就说FLASH张张西导没就张张说FLASH就
    说死你

"I didn't want to do this at first... I just wanted to diligently do my proper work. I have absolutely no idea where those bigwigs learned of my drawings, who then just went and asked me to do this... I pretended that I only know how to do simple drawings and couldn't do Flash... They insisted on me doing this, so I had no choice but to give them these sketches for post production. If I told them I can do Flash, then they'll probably ask me to do the animation and voices as well... In such an industry, you gotta keep a low profile. Even if you're talented, you have to pretend you aren't, or you'll end up being worked to death. "

Piracy and making a profit from piracy are two very different things.

Fansubs have increased knowledge of these animes to regions japan doesn't really care about sending anime to, despite the publishers whining about how fansubs steal there pretend money to a region they never bothered to care about.

But I don't appreciate people who just take take take and never give anything back to the creators.

I once saw a Chinese cartoon:
they used the backgrounds of Clannad, the part when Nagisa was about to "confess" to Ryou.
They also used Kotomi's theme while they were at it.
Then, they would just put their character over it.

After that, there was some sort of space battle, and I thought I recognized some Macross themed buildings.

Really, even though I'm a Chinese myself (Hong Kong), I hate them so much. I wonder when they're going to do something about their attitude...

    05:14 28/01/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

That reminds me of a mascot of a Bank (iirc) in my country back when in my childhood named Along. They actually released a few volumes of comic books of that mascot character which apparently were nothing but just a complete trace-off from random chapters of Doraemon; the storyline, the settings, the positions, the poses.., all were replaced by their own characters doing the exact same thing.

Oh, of course they didn't (and won't trace) Shizuka's daily bath scenes..

I still can't see how they can get away with it, can't Japane file complaints of copyright, surely they have patents in their anime concepts.

    Comment by Anonymous
    10:39 28/01/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

So not only are you laboring under the painfully asinine notion that regional copyright law applies internationally, but you also ascribe "patents" to "anime concepts" in some sort of fictionalized conception of the intellectual property infrastructure as being broadly protected by "patents."

Moreover, not only does "Japane" not hold the IP rights to these characters, but it isn't anything in any pertinent sense.

To sum up: *Japan* has no legal recourse because it isn't the IP holder of these characters. Furthermore, the legal owner of these concepts has no legal remedy because of the lack of any supportable framework for protecting intellectual property internationally.

    Comment by Anonymous
    00:36 29/01/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

No legal rights to hold the characters? Then how come certain anime videos get takin off of youtube? Must have Legal rights to the characters somehow.

    Comment by Anonymous
    23:10 28/01/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

10:39 anon, of course they should have legal copyrights of the animes. Anything invented for the most part has a copyright and or patent of sorts, even then famous people are still renowned for their work otherwise we could all claim Einsteins or Newtons theories and work was all 'our' (anons) idea.

Fucking naive thinking you have imo, why don't we all just copy each other and lose totally everything that makes us actually think.

China ripped off stupid amount of things, i mean 5cm per second is a movie as well, an anime movie, but still a movie, and they have fuckall right to copy anything.

I think it has something to do with Japan's and China's relationship. It's always been a bit edgy, and i don't think Japan wants to start anything serious over it because they don't want any confilcts. Fucking communists, think everything belongs to them. 'Yeh we all share stuff and are a happy government, except we actually control everything and nobodies equal'.

    China rips off everything.

China builds bridges out of trash.

China makes jewelry out of toxic waste.

China sells organs from executed "gangsters".

In short: China needs to be destroyed.

I don't think it should be destroyed, just needs a reform within itself. Better government, better housing, and better paying jobs. That way they don't have to resort to being the nation with the highest piracy rate.

china must be destroyed to protect the puppies and whatever else they eat, and our children from their toxi crap that they try to pass as either toys or jewels

I must disagree, his supporting points are perfectly serviceable.

However, I'm troubled by the lack of context for
    "China must be destroyed".

Should it be split into little citystates like renaissance Italy?
Or can it be left whole, if it changes its name (Han-istan?)?
Failing that, are you suggesting rendering the entire chinese landmass
    totally uninhabitable?

    China must be destroyed.
For peace and love and world safety.
    Remember safety always first.
And yeah China should lose some not han territory and rest should be divided.
BTW Russia Germany and USA should be divided too.
For the sake of peace and love.

And India need to be nuked for bolllywood films.

    Damn right.

If the people see they get gifts from China they'd instantly toss it back to them telling them they don't want fake [insert anything here].
So go back to that thing you call China and rebuild that wall so it's unbreachable so that we never see or hear from you again.

@anon 5:24 the 1.3 billion people nation is like that because of their financial state.

the country is big and industry is booming, but labor there is cheap and the nature of an industrial intensive economy backfires on them.
