Actually, so called democracy is the main thing at fault here. Enjoy the vote of mindless majority (having absolutely no idea about anything related to economy, politics or even who is going to “represent” them after getting elected), easily manipulated by marketing specialists and media.

It’s like rising 3 kids, and using democracy at home to let them vote on what they can or cannot do. They are too stupid for that, in the same way people are too stupid (and lazy, to even do basic research) for voting. Maybe in a perfect world it could work (where everyone had degree in economy, wasn’t religious nutter, could respect other opinions, and voted only basing on his own research), but not in the real one.

So, people with radically different propositions (even if logical and reasonable), have absolutely no chance of getting anywhere. You’re stuck with big, popular choices.

All in all, nothing will get changed (be it Australia or any other country with developed democracy) – even if for the sole reason, that a politician is a career maker, with not necessarily large period to “shine”. Corruption and sucking up are obvious things to begin with. If you can force your ego and views on other people along the way, it’s added bonus.

Look at Japan, and the retarded penal code article #175. A bit too lax two-liner responsible for over half a century of mosaics, bars & steaming. Backed by retarded judges and their narrow vision of what is or isn’t “moral”. Wikipedia has good external references to information about how/why it developed over the years.
