Infamously incompetent yet strangely successful eroge maker Overflow has delayed its flagship interactive anime Cross Days for a staggering 6th time.
The game, originally scheduled for 27/2/2009, was first delayed to 24/4/2009, then to 26/6/2009, 20/11/2009, 18/12/2009, 29/1/2010 and now “finally” 19/3/2010, making Overflow the 3D Realms of eroge developers, and about as successful.
The huge number of successive delays probably suggests a development and QA fiasco, so just what shape any putative final release takes is anyone’s guess.

Apart from fixing bugs and stuff, my guess is that they want to build up as much anticipation as possible for the game at this time.
Remember, infamy often leads to some people racking in the cash.
There might be some truth to it. But I think generally it is not a good idea to keep the product in development cycle longer than it should be, especially since they haven't released any new games after Summer Days(OK maybe except the PS2 port). No cash flow, no R&D, no new product. And it still costs you money to generate publicity(ads, promotions) even if you missed the release schedule. Well at least they are taking their time to get it right this time. Hopefully no more ridiculous patch for consumers.

Actually the wait has been much longer than what it appears to be. 0verflow first released the info about Cross Days way back in 2007, long before they even have a release date for it. And then the release date came close and got delayed, delayed, and delayed...now for the sixth time. Quite unusual for an eroge.

I actually wish they'd go back to their old style of games. Large Ponpon and Summer Radish Vacation were some of the first eroge I ever played and still some of my favorites. Of course there is a very specific reason *why* I like them so much, but still... It would be nice for them to go back.

The demo(s) have been out for half a year. They're near unplayable and have so many bugs/errors it's absurd.
No real surprise that it's delayed yet again.
They may release bugsy games and the delays are definitely annoying, but out of the the few eroge I've played, School Days remains the one I've enjoyed the most and Summer Days sports the hottest animated loli action scene of any game to my knowledge...
If anything, more time put into a game benefits it.
Of course to amateurs like the authors of this site it may seem like a bad sign.
But frankly, as I am a lead programmer for a game studio too, if we gave every game 6 more months, every single one of them would turn out for the better.
Good thing I never really liked Overflow. Their art is a bit too pale for me.

The actual story is just that the head was too much of a perfectionist. Every time a better and newer game engine was released, he just HAD to switch everything over. A specialist that was brought in said that they could have released it years ago and still made millions, but the game was never good enough for that guy.
