The denizens of 2ch have pooled their photographic resources to create an extensive gallery of jinja, or Shinto shrines, along with a number of other religious objects, particularly the “torii” gates which mark passage from the profane to a sacred space.
Such buildings are known for the quality of their architecture, and for their picturesque natural surroundings:

Thanks Arte, it's been too long since you've posted a non-H gallery. Great job with this one, I really loved it.
Can anyone spot the ninja in each picture?
geez I visited these shrine when I'm playing Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble and I don't really get it why I donate yen yet nothing happen?
Exquisite gallery. Scenery is always really cool, and old shrines make for some wonderful pictures.
It makes me kinda sad looking at those torii. The anime club I'm a member of build one somewhere around 16 feet tall, and we're quite proud of it. It... doesn't really compare to those, though. Some of them look higher than most trees.
pic 44 reminds me of the steps before the furude shrine from hinamizawa maybe its based on it.
fap fap fap fap
wait nvm
Japanese architecture always inspires me, they bring such feelings of tranquility and warmth.
I get the significance of single tori, but what do the lines of tori stacked together symbolize?
There are even a handful of nice jinja outside Japan, such as Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America in Washington State:

Are there any jinja in your part of the world?
Hmmmm love that, more of those Galleries please! This site is still a bit about Japan not only hawt stuff.
I hope you get more of stuff like landscapes or tea fields in japan.
i cant fap to this!
Aaaaaaaaaaaa, a peace of mind ^-^ Like this gallery. Need this kind of gallery once in a while for refreshing, yu know what I mean ^-^
It's not like Japanese build shrine with quality materials, but with that levels of finishing and details makes it much more appealing than Mediterranean temple build on eastern Europe.
One of the beauties of Japan.
I'm really attracted to Japanese shrines, somehow it's a heritage that must be preserved. :3
One of the nicest galleries so far. That's for sure.
Nice... it's good to enjoy some sceneery pictures and such once in a while. I dont see how people thought this site to be all ero
#65
lol nice dog
Traditional japanese culture on my Sankaku? It's more likely than you think!
I love the orange =QQQQ
Japan is Great!!!!!
Damn you, this gallery is one more reason why I want to visit Japan some day...
Hehe, ginger for the last pic. Clever.
首都から離れるほど日本の良さが表れますよー
I love japan!
BEAUTIFUL!
I watched this gallery with my jaw dropped.
I wish I could go and visit those places one day.
8-D
65 made me d'awwwwwww
Where's porn?
*sigh* It's scenery like this that makes me wish I lived in Japan.
gallery FAIL
Such a beautiful view...

Photo I took last year.
Looks familiar doesn't it.
No 48 (the triangular one) looks familiar.
If I remember right this is the actual grave of Jesus, who ended up in Tohoku somehow according to local myth.
*fap fap fap fap*
Some of those shrines won't be standing a few decades from now, judging by all the decay and moss. Such things happen quickly unless the local community makes an active effort to save places like these. Of course a pair of twin miko would help as well (especially if one of them is a tsundere). A nice gallery all in all.
I believe the buildings are continuously updated with fresh timber, when decaying of wood becomes apparent. Shrines are kept in their original appearance, but renewed with new wood.
But not all religious structures seem to be that well kept, after all. Maybe they are replaced elsewhere.
Those pics are HOT and Sexy! I'm so horny right now <3
*fap* *fap* *fap*
I swear none of the other galleries come even close to the level of arousal this gallery gives.
damn, can I join? Those pics made me say "NO" to my girlfriend lol.
*fap* *fap* *fap*
I remember when was said that some of those places were used as "inspiration" for the backgrounds in elfen lied...
Kamakura mostly.
No Hakurei jinja??
Go Gensoukyo
Hakurei....jinja no....BINBO MIKO!!
.......HAI!.......HAI!.............HAI SEIKAI!!!!!
KUIZU JAINAI IN DESU YO!!
Awesome pics. I'd really love to take a tour around Japan and visit as many shrines as possible.
Btw, what's those paper-thingies called that are tied to a rope that's around a tree?
Those are Shide, used for blessings.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shide_(Shinto)
Then train up your physical condition. Shrines are usually on top of high hills. That`s hard climbing, bro.
Is 35-41 a place where these are manufactured? This stretch of pics seems so odd.
The juxtaposition of 34 is just so bizarre.
The rest are exquisite though. Many are extravagant, but my favorite are the minimal ones.
Those are some sexy torii. I came twice from this gallery.
All these "torii" gates remind me of someone we all know...
Jigoku Shoujo
(no19 looks like da temple entrance for bakemono though)
jinja, not jinger... it's not cool
You mean 'ginger'?
Don't blame me, it was in the original thread. "Jinja" and "ginger" are pronounced/spelled identically in Japanese.
Technically, the pronounciation should go like this:
ginger = jinjaa
"Ginger" is used alongside "Shouga".
technically, wouldn't it be pronounced "shouga"?
that being the actual japanese word for ginger.
A lovely gallery. I enjoyed my visit to Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. Generally any shrine with a trail of torii leading down its main path creates a very peaceful feeling when one walks through them. It was nice when they put up the orange gates in Central Park for that installation art piece a few years ago. It reminded me a lot of those torii.
I'd love to see the submerged torii at Itsukushima Shrine sometime. I'm a little surprised it's not here in the gallery seeing how famous it is, but I guess a photo wasn't necessary since every Japanese person and his/her mother knows about it.
No boobs, no girls, no loli?
Screw to.
I leave.
Whats with all the dolls in 57.
That jinja holds a memorial service for old dolls.
The antecessors of anime PVC figurines
Nice. it has been too long since last gallery like this. always prefer these.
agreed 100% trepiz,
these pictures make me want to visit japan and start touring through all these places, they look amazing.
If you actually visit/tour, you'll change your mind about wanting to see half of them. You will mostly think seen one, seen them all with a few exceptions. At least that's how me and the people I went with felt. I guess it also depends on who you go with.
JAL is going bankrupt next month anyways. They'll restart right away though.
I respectfully disagree. I think it depends on how much you enjoy the history of the sites, architecture, atmosphere, etc.
I saw a few while I was there and I'd give a fucking kidney to go back and see more.
I'll take your kidney for a plane ticket to Japan.
Comes with first class seating on JAL.
First class passengers are currently being taken hostage and held for ransom to get JAL out of the financial pinch.
Futsumi Inari Taisha (the shrine with all the torii gates lined up after each other in the above pictures; there is something like 10,000 of them) is quite nice. It's probably my favourite place in Kyoto.
Sorry, that should be Fushimi Inari Taisha. I always get that wrong.
Missing the panties, half nude to nude girls in 3D or 2D
where is trap?
great gallery and some pretty awesome photos... some of those torii feel so surreal.. especially the ones in the more remote areas
These look so cool... I'd really love to see these in person; no, I need to see them!
We need pics of shrine maidens
Nothing beats the 88 Temples in Onomichi. Just walking to each temple and shrine tells a different story.
But those are Buddhist temples....
Do the shrine maidens wear the white and red in Japanese Buddhist temples?
No, shrine maidens are for shrines (jinja,) which are Shinto. If you saw women at a Buddhist temple (o-tera), I would imagine she'd be a nun.
Armpits, they came to my mind.
I thinking he actually mention the twin girls in fatal frame 2
I CAME, through the gate.
i knew that was gonna happen sooner or later
One of the most boring galleries on SC, but also one that has some of the most beautiful pics.
Theres a picture of Rin from Katawa Shoujo on pic 75 lol
Or looks like her anyways
Jinjas & Torii seem to be always placed at the most beautiful sites in each region. Everything in surroundings is so beautiful that old atheist like me has difficulties to keep his standing.
Let´s face it, Japan has very beautiful and rich nature.
Refreshing gallery. I love Shinto.
Me too, but mainly visually.
Posting a very boring gallery to wash some of the guilt from posting so much filty pornography?
better than someone who cant appreciate the elegant and exotic picture.
i bet you cant tell the difference between porn and art.
@Anon 22:41:
The difference between porn and art is ... "It's all art."
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.
commenting to a 'very boring' gallery to wash some of the guilt from viewing so much filthy pornography?
They will understand it later. They are currently only trying to look cool.
How sad that some people can't understand the glorious beauty of Japanese nature and Shinto shrines.
what does that "从是女人结界" "女人结界门" mean?
http://img3.sankakustatic.com/wp-content/gallery/cache/59137__468x_shinto-shrine-jinja-torii-081.jpg
@Anon 20:49 19/01/2010:
According to Google ( http://translate.google.com/translate_t?hl=&ie=UTF-8&text=%E4%BB%8E%E6%98%AF%E5%A5%B3%E4%BA%BA%E7%BB%93%E7%95%8C%22+%22%E5%A5%B3%E4%BA%BA%E7%BB%93%E7%95%8C%E9%97%A8&sl=ja&tl=en# [http://translate.google.com/translate_t?hl=&ie=UTF-8&text=从是女人结界" "女人结界门&sl=ja&tl=en#] ), it means:
从是 结界 women "" Women 门 结界
But, that's Google for you!
It's a barrier prohibiting women from entering a sacred area.
How dare thee.
In Shinto there is no sin and guilt in Porn.
Actually it has no built in moral system so it adopts from whatever philosopher it sees fit from Confuscius to Bushido.
Japanese view of sex is based on Shinto. Don`t confuse it with Buddhism, which is mostly puritan.
On other hand, most Japanese are both, depending if it is time for wedding or funeral.
