Sorry if I misunderstand something.
Perhaps its the bridge between reality and fantasy.
Obviously once it becomes photoshoped it kinda counts as 2D.
Because a lot of them are desperate for a real relationship but in reality a lot of otaku are selfish, that's why 2D girls are more popular among them, this way they can spend time with there "girl" whenever they want.
2D girls are great but no matter how much people wish they were real, they are not, nor will they ever be.
That's why we have cosplay
