I have no problems seing stray cats and stray dogs being killed and used for food.

I think that in the human brain what separates what animals we can and cannot eat is the ability of an animal to SHOW affection and the humans of understanding it.

That´s the reason dogs and cats are normally more protected, because most of the people know when they are happy,sad, etc....

While with ducks, fishes or cattle is not so easy to tell.

I love how people here think it's a "common delicacy" in China. Go to Hong Kong, Shanghai, or even the socialist capital of Beijing and ask for dog meat. Unless it's a back alley street parlor or shady rich-but-illegal establishment, you're not likely to find what you're looking for; they're more likely to feed you an overgrown rat.

Even rural areas show appreciation for the animal, as it can be used to herd other animals and watch over property. In richer cities that are trying to be more "western", many dogs get treated better than people - although given some living conditions, that's not a huge achievement.

Something that personally bothered me however was how animals meant for domestication are treated. A lot of the petshops in Shanghai are outdoor ones, and they usually keep cats and dogs in cages. During the summer, that's 40 degree Celsius weather, and the establishments are tantamount to locking the animal in a car with the windows up. Of course, sellers also use this to "guilt" buyers into purchasing a pet.

In other news: I love my dogs, but the dogs in those pictures were probably bred to be eaten. As long as they don't go through pain, I don't see how it's any better for these dogs to go stray and die on the streets. I don't really agree with eating dogs and I probably will never try it myself however I also don't think that it's necessarily wrong, especially in poor countries like China.

Selling dogmeat and the other leftovers is a very economic solution. There are countless dirty dogs on the streets, they are almost like rats, so anyone has to cut them down anyways.

Only negative thing is using a cub to crush their skull.. even the coreans shoot them with poison stuff and collect them after 30 minutes of fighting gainst the death, but this method reminds me on seal-killing. I mean it´s sure a handy way of doing your job, but it should be pretty exhausting to crush the skills of like 1000 puppy dogs in a row..
