Please realize that Japan is in the northern hemisphere, so they have winter at the same time as we do. Also any place on the equator is tropical and hot 365 days a year (and the extra day for leap years), which is where the setting of the picture most likely is, taking the vegetation into account.
Fooly's point was stating why would it be cold on a tropical island. I don't think he was talking about living in the southern hemisphere at all.
