China’s unique grasp of intellectual property once again courts controversy with the allegations that “Dinosaur Planet” in fact heavily plagiarises Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy, for the Wii.
Decide for yourself in the below videos:
Super Mario Galaxy:
Dinosaur Planet:

HEY ITS ME, CHINA
CHINA WAS HERE
JAPAN IS A LOSER
HEY THERE HONG MEILING LONG TIME NO SEE
China needs to be destroyed!
HEAVEN OR HELL
LET'S ROCK!!
This guys really don't have the slightest idea of originality.
You guys make my head hurt! ( @_@)
Jap Land is Americunt's bitch. But Americunt's cannot protect their dog forever.
Many 100 millions of Chinese are just waiting for the war against Jap Land.
In a few decades Jap Land will be part or Greater China or, and this is better, China will make a big holocaust.
"CHINA ALWAYS COOL?"
@Anon above
Didn't you know Japan might be alowed to have their own army due to threathening test launches from north korea. And America is broke due to self shitted economy and can't afford to care about it.
gundam incoming?
Anon 06:40 02/12/2009: Japan already have their own army. Its called Self Defense Forces. Under the Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution, it limits the amount of activities they can perform, to defensive purposes only.
@other anon replying to the other anon
the talks are about amending said article.
No... Anonymous wuz hir....
China's gaming industry motto should be: "How low can you go?"
LOL china
How is China doing so well? They steal everything. From jobs to anime....
They took yer jaab!
Nothing wrong in copying ideas.
Dey tuk iz jehhhhbbbbb!
Dey tuk his jaarb!
touk is yob!
tuk terr juuurrrr
china can make money and it's brilliant- although highly unethical. instead of paying money to outside companies for overseas products, why not make copies of the ideas and sell those instead to keep all the money and jobs inside china? To add to the strategy, China makes it really tough for outside companies to sell games that they deem are "controversial" thus insuring the market for China based copy artists. I.E WoW and China's WoW knockoff. If you ask me, China knows exactly what its doing- more than people give them credit for.
Rey ruk riz rob!
hey we chinese are the best at what we do thats copying :D u guys hahahahhahahah of ur ideas
durb yur burrrr
jerg ger gurrrrr
Theh Durka Duuuuuur?
their job, they took. Stupid, all those anons are..
@anon 8:18 there is nothing brilliant about stealing intellectual property. it's unfortunate china doesn't make anything worth stealing or maybe they would be more concerned with copyrights.
lo. chinese are like parrots only repeating and repeating thanks god chinese demostrate they cant do nothing withoyt external ideas. that make chinese like some sort of living machines to contruct anything but without power of think what to do alones. great material for seudo slavery totally mentally dependents. better than opium
...
As a Chinese descendant, I disagree some of you guys' comments.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpiI2FPbNIc
Mind it if you watch.
I'm sure the actual gameplay will be dreadful. Laggy controls, shitty collision detection, etc.
No thats to original, more like "they're luvin it".
I can't deny that their copy skill is so high
But they can't produce any new idea which means they still sucks!
"They will copy all the games until 9.9.9(games)"
"What would happen then?"
"Nothing!"
"They just suck"
Unlimited CopyrightInfringement Works yo.
"If you make it, we copy it!"
"No remorse"
That is actually how it is supposed to work... someone makes something good, someone else emulates the style (sometimes almost exactly), and it sells!
Nintendo, Microsoft, etc. have to realize THAT IS HOW THE FRIGGING INDUSTRY WORKS!
It's been that way since... well, the 1600's. You either put more value in the GENUINE stuff so that people overlook these 'knock-offs' or your company disappears.
Yeaaaahhh no. It works that way with gameplay mechanics, but this is taking it too far.
Hah! saying China steals IP is like saying prostitutes fuck.
Why are these news items being reported as if they were even news at all?
Thats some serious plagiarism though.
No becouse ther're diffrent characters and story :[ . Only ideas the same .
Look at the US Gameloft and their games for iphone :] .
Can it be anymore blatant?
If they wanted to, yes it could.
they could give the Dinosaur a mustache
The dinosaur could be Yoshi.
A moustached Yoshi? WTF.
Can it be anymore blatant?
Why do you guys use ugly pictures for Mario? Its disrespectful. He is a Legend Dammit.
Oh and Fuck China!
Actually, it is art with a twist. The trick is, that it is drawn like the 2D Gumba and Mario would look if they stayed the same, only with more colours and a higher resolution.
Oh yeah I guess I can see that.
I imagine that's what the artist probably thought mario would look like in real life, but then the newer games came, and his childhood visions where shattered. Resulting in... this.
A twisted rendition wrought from frustration and epic art skillz.
Oh and Fuck Meiling!
Duludubi Star is a nice name for a game though.
....
xD
They have no shame
That's just sad.
...If China puts even half of the effort they put into copying IC towards making something original, they might actualy make something decent. Sadly, all that they do is make extreamly obvious sprite hacks of popular and well known games.
I don't know. If I offered any of you anons decent money for copying work, I'd bet my left nut most of you would take that offer.
Uh, what is wrong with copying IC? Personally, I see similarities to Mario Galaxy there... but then again, I could see similaries between Super Mario Bros for the NES, Cave Story for the Nes, etc. etc. etc.
When you make something, and it is POPULAR.... you get people making KNOCKOFFS of it... there is nothing wrong with that, as long as the people in question ADMIT that your stuff inspired theirs!
Unfortunately, most of the 'copyright lawyers' live in a dream world where that is not the case, so they write ASININE laws to 'protect copyright' that end up stifling innovation.
Dont count in NES games, those everyone copied, something like "IP" didn't even exist. Nowadays, its something different. It is okay, to copy things to make a new expirience, but you shouldn't copy to simply make the same.
i had a chicken burger in china once, it was nice
that wasn't chicken
It tasted like chicken and looked like chicken but it was actually called dinosaur meat.
Or it was someone's 2nd born...
It looks like a rip off.
OMG YOUS A GENIUS.
he deserves a noble peace prize for that one
Ooops.. Sorry.. Sold on the black friday sale... Come back next year!
You mean Obama ?? :>
Thank you Captain Obvious for coming to our rescue...
At least it's a PC game. I'd play it.
they didn't even change the octopus boss battle.......ha
Isn't "Dinosaur Planet" an aborted Rareware game that was eventually turned into a Starfox game? They couldn't even come up with a unique title!
On a side note, how can you have more than 6 life in SMG? As far as I know you can have 3 life, and an added extra of 3 life with some power-up.
Shameless rip offs, what a 'surprise' from China.
Why don't we ever hear about lawsuits?
The game is probably only released in China, since it's meant for Chinese audiences. Nintendo isn't even going to bother starting a lawsuit in China.
Is the game on the Wii? If so, doesn't Nintendo have some say over what can be published onto their platform?
-
Anyway, wasted talent -_-
they have the Vii instead of the wii
China's just being China. Don't mind it. Am sad to share the same continent with them..
lol they even went and used the Overlord background music hah!
It's our fault (US). After nuking Japan, we should had start to nuke China. Now it's to late, at least for China.
A wonderfull imagination: A world free of Jap-Perverts and Chink-Thief's
I'd be fine with a world free on nuke-humpers like yourself
why stop there? There are lots of other countries whose views differ from your own. While you're at it, you should nuke Europe too, and Africa. And I hear Penguins in Antarctica are taking fish needed by your fishing industry so you should nuke those bastards too!
THE PENGUINS ARE PLOTTING TO KILL US ALL!!!
HOW CAN YOU NOT NUKE THEM?!
just think, who would you least expect, huh? I bet penguins didn't even cross your mind. But yet wear do penguins live other than the most inhospitable place for us humans? And why is that? It's because they don't want us to see what they are building... building... BUILDING since the dawn of time itself.
I have seen their creation and it is not even of this world, it is an infernal device capable of erasing the entirety of existence itself if it's creators so wish.
But I know their true plan... oh I know all too well... I've witnessed it first hand... oh the horror I had seen in those days of unending night I'd spent in Alaska working for the secret service. It cannot be put into words.
looks like 2 diffrent games, i see no resemblence
Your sir need some glasses then
No, he is actually right. I see a game INSPIRED by Super Mario Galaxy, I don't see a ripoff of Super Mario Galaxy.
It's like saying that Super Mario Bros was 'ripped off' by Cave Story on the old NES.
Doesn't Nintendo have some say over what is published onto their platform?
what should they do?? as if the chinese government will do anything against it
hell, China wants to 'destroy' Japan so much
yet all they do is steal all their best shit and call it something else
first with their hentai, now with our old pal Mario
except your fav, hentai, sis.
HEY CHINA STILL COOL! YOU PAY LATER! LATER!!!!!
Even the font? Damn
Just replace the dinosaur with a magical loli, and no one will think it is plagiarism...
Too true!
China quality.
That's an oxymoron right there...
it's also a double negative
Same difference
I don't see any way they can say that that game isn't at least heavily "inspired" by Super Mario Galaxy. It looks pretty much like a skin hack with some things changed around here and there.
It is heavily inspired by Super Mario Galaxy, even I can say that.... HOWEVER, the fact is that only the COMPLETE GAME AND CHARACTERS can by copyrighted.... change a few characters, change the bosses... the law even in the United States says that is now a new game!
Someone kill this game now.
kill it with fire
thats your solution for everything!
The guy playing SMG really sucked.
i unno, seems like an ok game if you don't count the mario galaxy rip off parts... or they could've done the same thing in a more original fashion... i have no idea what i'm saying..
so stop it
That's unbelievable. Some of the scenes were taken straight from the proper game.
Chinese want to make something make something that goes by saying its your own work inspired your life to create it.
Make a game that would get you notice like make a game that would offend Americans.
Absolutely agreed, if you want to get noticed, offend us, we spend all our time trying our damndest to insult each other and everyone else. If someone came allong and did it better, we would have to notice.
(I am not intending to be sarcastic, well, maybe a little.)
As a sinology student, i think that China has the right to do this. Japan, Korea and Vietnam are at their core nothing more than sub-cultures of China. They are part of the Sinosphere, a greater Chinese culture, so in the end, they are Chinese. You can't rob yourself.
but you CAN rob a company and it's Italian Plumber's quest into space.
also, China had a big influence on other Asian countries, but these countries all developed their own identity.
to say "You can't rob yourself" is really misleading, Since they are completely different people with different cultures and social structures.
any history student can tell you the key differences between China and Japan.
and that goes double for present day China.
I'd advise you to take a better look at your view, perhaps brushing up (or taking classes in) Anthropology as well...
"They are part of the Sinosphere, a greater Chinese culture, so in the end, they are Chinese. You can't rob yourself."
That. That right there makes me think you're not really a sinology student. Why the fuck would anybody want a degree in the study of simply "China" to begin with? Chinese History or Classical Chinese Literature I can understand, but just China in general sounds like a stupid thing to dedicate yourself to. What the flying fuck would you use that degree for other than sucking up to commie chinks?
LOLZ I wanna see you use that defense in front of a court that's accusing you of theft of intellectual property.
WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF
China, that's what
It's funny how everyone who jumps on the "omg plagiarism" bandwagon from a 30sec gameplay video.
If this is plagiarism, then Id software should be getting tons of royalties for every single shooter on the planet. And Nintendo should be paying Universal for inventing the platformer genre.
Disclaimer: never played either game, also IANAL
people 'scream' plagiarism because the game is pretty much a carbon copy of Mario Galaxy
I'll be honest in saying I've seen texture hacks of Super Mario 64 that could pass for original games, when compared to this... 'game'.
there's nothing new under the sun
WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF
Mario is a dickhead anyway
no, I think the Goomba looks more like a dickhead
What are you people talking about? Dinosaur planet is the most original game ever (Sarcasm).
Ugh... not again... This is getting really anoying that China can only copy stuff but lacks originality.
Ahahaha...
"FLom each accolding to he ability, to each accolding to he needs..."
Seriously, tho- Let's not outright say "Plagiarism"
First, it's been proven time and again in the fiction/literary field that it is entirely possible for two writers, even two teams of writers to come up with the SAME idea, right down to most of the character names without any involvement or attempt to copy/imitate the other. Especially in the same limited field.
Now, frankly, Mario is the top at "Platformer" games and they are doing a very good move to re-interpet them into the 3D pixel realm. But, if another company makes a 3D platformer, well there's a limited amount of stuff they can do with it. What shapes work, what effects look cool, etc.
The only thing they "Ripped off" that wasn't done dozens of times before was the "Multiple Planets/Gravity" within the same playing field-I think, though there's probably some obscure title that did it first before Nintendo did their awesome looking "Super Mario Galaxy" on the Wii. And that, is not "Plagarism" it's "Imitation". And Imitation, mon petit ami, is the sincerest form of flattery.
"And Imitation, mon petit ami, is the sincerest form of flattery."
Even if anything you said was worth listening to, which it wasn't, you ruined it all when you tried to use French.
>you ruined it all when you tried to use French.
Ah, all you "TL:DR" trolls, why even bother responding then? Just don't respond and STFU.
Several college instructors I've had (and a few High School ones) have insisted "The French Ruined Everything"... And they made a good case I couldn't really argue with.
And I don't really care about French or French culture that much, 'cept DeSade and Mime. The latter I consider a subtle and deadly art that I study in spare time off and on. The former is a good inspierer of sexy fantasies. The modern "Vanilla" version of course, the surprisingly tight bodied 'innocent damsel' getting mostly stripped and lightly flogged in the face of degenerate Aristocrats... Not the lady sewn in a fresh cow skin being crushed slowly as it shrinks or two homos sharing a meal by vomiting it back and forth into each others mouths as they gay sex each other...
I was kind of expecting a pathetic troll whine, but thought it would be about my mentioning some "Remittant Glasp of Lound Eye Toonnge..." but I meant no disrespect, westerners doubtless sound more horrid and are much joked about attempting eastern languages and their (Spoken) stuff does make better sense than our "Phonetic, but written with crazy rules" language; "Engrish: Easy to lealn but Vely hald tu Spik!"
But for only lightly mentioning the FRENCH!? ahhahahaha!
I do not think Nintendo feels flattered, nor do I believe China to be sincere...
It's not that the games are so similar, it's that they probably just hacked into Super Mario Galaxy and changed a few character models.
Ever look up any "Hacked" Super Mario 64 on YouTube? Yeah, some people with way too much free time and obsession... Well the results don't look shitty, or PS2 mediocre on a newer system.
Now, it's got some of the same "Features" like tiny little worlds with gravity, etc. But the game's engine itself seems generic. I'm not up on game programming, but it reminds me of free/few hundred $ upgrade engines they promote in books at the bookstores for aspiring game programmers.
The "Rotating cylinder" that shows on the pre-play preview on both games should be the giveaway. In the former, it's perfect so you get an idea what it does. The latter, the textures merge together. The latter is like "Malice" an under appreciated and early PS2 game, really good for its time but almsot 'generic' now in what could be done.
In the mass media, things tend to come in "Twos". Now, sometimes it's blatant, like when Disney is going to release a movie, as soon as they put up the posters someone rushes through a cheaply animated imitation using the same title, or similar title when they do something that was (until they got their hands on it) "Public Domain". But there often are things, like movies, TV shows, etc. that inexplicably come out at the same time as each other. Some are a 'trend' like how "Forrest Gump" caused a rash of "Stupid" movies - "Dumb and Dumber", "Who's Harry Crumb", "Bean" etc... Some just have an oddly similar flavor.
I think this game is simply "Imitative" that someone in the producer's office said "That look good. Going to be popular. You do something like it. You do it now." So they put together the mini-world hopping and the "Cute Dinosaur" elements into a 3D platformer game that probably isn't as cool as Super Mario Galaxy... But I strongly doubt plagarism, it's the "Sincerest form of flattery".
And, really, perhaps I'm just wasting time arguing with a bunch of "Clique Weasals" who think it's "Cool" to bash this... But really, should the producers of "Street Fighter" be able to sue and ban and remove from the market "Fatal Fury", "Virtua Fighter", "Tekken", "Art of Fighting" - but then themselves be ruined by a suit from Broderbund ("Karateka") that later is ruined by a suit from whoever made "Karate Champ"?
Well, I'd like to play it, really. If it is a good copy, than that game is awesome. SMG is awesome --> it's copy is at least good.
it's China quality... so I don't trust it
That is not plagiarism. If so, all FPSs are copies of Quake or Doom.
If it's not the same source code running, it's not a copy. Game developer here.
Me like Chinese Food
no sir, you like Americanized Chinese food
real Chinese food isn't made here
they used the same Font for the title, same animations, a sprite swapped icon for the pointer, one of the bosses from Mario Galaxy, and I believe someone also mentioned that the music played is from Galaxy too...
so, tally that up and you get: not a rip-off, but a fucking COPY of the original game, just painted over so they can try to pass it off as their own work.
though to be fair, this game will be terrible, the frame rate and visuals all look clunky and I have a feeling it's gonna control like ass
OP here. So what man. What about art of fighting, or world heroes?
What about tekken then? What about Chase HQ (not that you know what that is).
Gaming history was always 80% copy, 10% innovation and the rest is just skin and graphics.
I'm not chinese btw. But I know what I'm talking about. You don't.
Most games usually at least use their own music. This one didn't even bother. Pull your head of your ass you chink.
Come and destroy the designer(of this game), i say no one will stop you, as long as you truly have the ability to destroy it.
Sheesh china, get some of your own creativity.Quit copying japan!
well, I suppose in a land of billions, uniqueness and creativity may be a bit hard to come by.
Actually, it should be the opposite. Japan with its 120+ million people can have so many ideas, so China should have many, many more. They could actually be a world-leader in the economy if they would stop being such idiots.
-_-' just cuz some lame as guy came up with it happens to be Chinese, whole China is considered evil and should die O_o
Okay it's crap and shouldn't be done, but tbh both games look fun
Wow....to go this far..
Japanophile gaijin bashes other Asian countries over copyright issues.
Poetic Justice
Please don't say "other Asian countries" here. Leave the continent I reside in out of this mess please. Asia is not China. Please don't disgrace Asia just because of 1 screwed up country that's in it.
Oh, China! What kind of wacky plagiarism shenanigans will you be up to next? *insert laughtrack here*
Guise, china made it first and Japan ripped it off.
Oh China will you ever learn ?
they say Imitation is the highest form of flattery but if you copy from someone it just makes you look you have no original ideas.
Given that China has blatantly no respect for intellectual property law, is there actually anything anyone can DO about this shit?
Ironically, 'Dinosaur Planet' was the development name for the N64 game that would eventually become Starfox Adventures on the Gamecube- although that was more a Zelda knock-off than a Mario one.
china= lols without original ideas
LOL ??? Even the western or japan games are copies of copies . Nothing original for a long time .
Hahaha! Someone check the audio in the trailer. It might be ripped of some cheap MMO trailer. XD
Dinosaurs are cooler than mario.
THIS IS CHINA BITCH, WE DON'T GIVE TWO SHITS BOUT YO MOTHER FUCKIN INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM.
Isn't there already a Nintendo game called "Dinosaur Planet"?
DAng it actually doesn't look half bad, even for a rip off, i mean hey they did a good job.
Tetris has been redone a 100000 times, but battle tetris gaiden was an awesome game.
And Mario Galaxy is a rip-off of The Little Prince. So what?
Strays a bit from the point, but funny none the less.
The best thing about Chinese people is how they will declare how the evil imperialistic West-Plus-Japan is poisoning them with their influence, and in the same fucking breath announce a complete rip-off of a {movie/game/invention} made there.
This kind of astounding double-think is the key to understanding the modern Chinese mindset. We don't need you, Evil West, but oh hey here's a bunch of bootlegged copies of your movies and terrible imitations of your games.
that's probably chinese state media you are talking about, trust me, people in china who go on internet and look at stupid crap like this troll just as hard as you guys.
wow looks like the most fun chinese mmo in a while.
So being generic equates to plagiarism?
Take a good look at both the vids before you blindly come and post some patriotic comment. Let's don't talk about the lack of ethics, originality and creativity for now. Where the f*** is the shame?! Group of shameless folks from China made a copy of a popular game to make quick bucks. And then when stuff like that gets around to this kind of community another group of shameless patriots come around to defend their country. Don't come and give bullshit like "imitation is the greatest form of flattery" Has that saying been made into a most-used Chinese proverb nowadays by you disgraceful folks? What is wrong is wrong, period.
It looks for me like they totally ripped the engine from teh game... Effects and animations looks the same, only meshes and content differs a bit DX
Good God, I hope they won't at least make a rip-off of 5 Centimetres Per Second, that'd like totally suck.
http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2009/09/02/souls-window-china-rips-off-5cm-per-second/
I can recommend you one guy, he can fix your sarcasm detector for practically nothing.
China is acting like a noob. They haven't done anything worthwhile so they don't understand how annoying it is when your ripped off.
Hey at least it's a cute little dinosaur~ XD
I am chinese and this makes me look bad. Still the Dinosaur looks cute!
China is yuck...
