Anime otaku are despairing over the news that the Winter 2010 anime season will see only some 16 new series airing, compared to 24 the year prior, a decrease of a third.
The list of new Winter 2010 anime runs along these lines (give or take a few depending on what is included as “TV anime”):
Baka to Test to Shōkanjū
Chowder
ChuuPara
Dance in the Vampire Bund
Durarara!!
Gundam UC
Hanamaru Youchien
Hidamari Sketch×☆☆☆
Kaitou Reinya
Katanagatari
Ladies versus Buttlers!
Nodame Cantabile Finale
Okami Kakushi
Omamori Himari
Seikon no Qwaser
Sora no Woto
Winter 2009 saw some 24 titles, and Winter 2008 26 or so.
The flood of low quality moe anime over the past few years seems to have proven unsustainable, if not highly damaging, just as many predicted – just whether this is the popping of an unsustainable bubble to be followed by a gradual recovery, or the symptoms of a longer term decline remains to be seen…

Chowder? Is that the cartoon?
Katanagiri, Katana Bakemonogatari crossover? Nadeko snakes and Ninjas? Ghost schoolgirls and Shurikens?
Oh cool...
From Cartoon Network? If so, there is no surprise, at all... They need look back to the Animes they made in the 90's or just before it became huge.
Those are the ones people want.
Sad how when things become popular, it loses that edge that attracted people to it in the first place. :'(
And who is this "people" you speak of?
People...humans...
the ones who control this world from the shadows..
Elitists nerds maybe?
'Cause they forget quality over quantity..
Omamori Himari FTW! XD
Seeing Chowder there surprised me, but I doubt it's the same. Also, Gundam Unicorn, hell yes.
Requesting Chowder doujinshi...
Gundam unicorn is the only one worth watching for me, all the others look retarded or crap or both.
you are wrong , dance in the vampire bund , durarara , okami kakushi and katanagatari are awesome too
Somehow i doubt katanagatari has anything to do with bakemonogatari
it;d be something like katanatari or garana if it was
It's by the same author actually.
news flash, the world wide economy is in the toliet. Don't panic 16 is not that bad. Now if this spring we only get 10.......yeah then you can panic
What if you mastubated and cum came out of your mouth?
might be time to panic
more like black blook came out of your d:ck
'black blood' i mean
Spring will more than make up for Winter, Black Rock Shooter and hopefully Strike Witches 2
Black Rock Shooter and Strike Witches 2 would be sweet, I'm waiting eagerly for that, and Dance in the Vampire Bund too, andother promissing anime.
As ever, all is USA fault! Dirty capitalists!! ><
You mean dirty socialist.
They were capitaist before but now they are more socialist alike.
And this is all commies fault. I know that becoze I live in one postsoviet country. Fucking mess if you ask me.
America is not a socialist country. Never has been.
It's becoming one though.
Quality over quantity maybe?
What burned me was finding out the Nanoha movie was a retelling.
I don't see much "quality" in that list besides Unicorn and Durarara!!.
Yet another season dominated by moe shit.
Gundam, Cobra, and Nodame. What the fuck else do you need?
Second season of Kaiji.
Don't forget Baccano.
I need only Nodame Cantabile....
Kaiji and Baccano. Those are exactly what we need, something where we aren't sitting watching some moe blob drink tea while talking about how badly she wants to learn to play the guitar... for 13 episodes...
Moe is killing the anime industry (or already killed it)
I dont see too much moe neither. Looks like a booooring season to me...
Wasnt Unicorn an suppsosed to be OVAs?
Exactly what I was thinking. I'll definitely be watching Durara, Katanagatari, that Strike Witches - fanservice + K-ON! show, and probably Cobra and Vampire Bund. It's been a long time since I've been so excited for so many coming shows (this might not seem like a lot, but I never watch more than 4 at once).
compared to this boring autumn season, there are more shows I plan to watch
Man, I miss Cowboy Bebop...
omg stop dwelling on the past! You sound like an old geezer.
I miss Dragon Ball Z...
i miss sailor moon
i miss doreamon
i miss ninja robots
I miss Future Boy Conan.
I miss Time Quest.
I missed the toilet
I miss Tonde Buurin...
I miss samurai pizza cats
I miss kabuki theater.
Tonde Buurin FUCK YEAH!!
I miss my mom.
You sound like narutard.
I hope things improve soon... I'm in the mood to see more Yandere characters...
Dance in the Vampire Bund isn't good enough for you?
That will be awesome. Can't wait for some vampire loli action.
Anyway i don't see a problem with 16. I mean i never manage even to check all the anime that come out every season, so i think there were too many anyways. And it's not like we don't have anime to watch. There are many anime that are finished and am still planing to see.
But the problem with 16 is when you can find anything interesting to wait for. Thats my case here. Except for the vampire loli, of course.
Baka to Test.. Yes!
This. Finally!!! Wooot!
im seeing less and less kid shows
Wall street Journal talk about the japanese animation problems
http://www.sankakucomplex.com/forums/topic.php?id=4772
Are they serious? The number's quite low...but is the list confirmed or is just a rough image?
Sora no Woto, K-ON in the sky.
Seikon no Qwaser, Soul Eater v2
It's nothing like Soul Eater. >>
Seikon no Qwaser, breast sucking action anime.
Yeah, sure sounds like Soul Eater v2.
BREAST MILK POWER-UP
This is for those who love Queen's Blade and Kanokon...
oh well i will look at it as a chance to catch up on some shows ive missed and hopefully it will improve in time
Side note: Dance in the Vampire Bund is going to be awesome.
Seriously? It took me 10 manga chapters to convince me it was shit.
I for one welcome our new vampire loli overlords.
Yes but Shaft will make it awesome.
^ This
Judging from the awesome trailer, the chara design and the fact that Shaft will do it, i have to say that this may be the anime that i'm the most looking forward to see
The story was meh. And the art didn't make things any better.
Do we get less moe? I'm sick of that shit.
Then stop watching moe shows... Geeez, anon.
meh, boom and busts aren't anything new to the anime industry. Move along people, nothing to see here.
You moe fags happy now
Yes, very much so.
Second row, second column, nice thighs
None of those looked interesting, based on just the pics.
We'll see what happens....
I think out of all of those, I can see maybe three that could possibly interest me, but I'm still not holding my breath. Anime's kind of gone downhill. They were wise to only release 16.
I don't care about such records. Chu~bura (hell yeah lingerie education and meganeko heroine), Sora no Wo to and Dance in the Vampire Bund are already in my list.
Dance in the Vampire Bund eh... though the outlook is that it might get "Shaft-ed". I'm sure those who read the manga would realize the amount of action involved...
Would you care if it was reduced to 8 next season.
Down to just 16 shows.
Man I wish I could say I had even 16 non anime shows to look forward to.
Maybe the anime industry needs to try and deliver a few REAALLY fucking awesome series, rather than truckloads of anime series all the time endlessly.
So fucking much anime out there, I have a massive binder of stuff I have not even gotten too yet. Easy to watch a first ep decide 'yah it's ok' and download the series, not so easy to find the time. They could STOP full STOP making anime for 3 solid years and I likely would still not be caught up for crying out loud.
I guess some of us fans ain't freaks with nothing else in our lives but to watch anime though.
New Cobra anime makes me very happy
at least there is a new coba series
Gundam UC basically owned the Winter Season.
hopefully there will be some quality central from this. less crappy anime would be a good thing.
I'm looking forward to Dance in the Vampire Bund and Gundam UC.
chowder is fucking awesome. best thing on cartoonnetwork besides flap jack.
It's for the best. Having too many anime out there gets the genre repetitive.
OBJCTION! Less anime means less genres touched that means less posibilities of get anime relevant of everyone interests.
Nah. The more the better. You don't have to watch every anime that's out there, and having more choices to choose from is always better than having fewer.
It's not like most of us pay to watch them anyway...
Only Katanagatari worth looking forward to.
No one is excited for Okami Kakushi? No love for Ryukishi07 and Peach-Pit?
Ok. Sold to me. Now I have TWO animes in my list. Thanks Pizzasrgo for the tip.
THIS IS MADNESS!
THIS IS SPARTA!!!
300 is old and forced and you two Anons should be ashamed of yourselves.
Nah, Supata is awesome! Way to go fellows anons!!
you forgot to say "madness??" before "this is..."
I don't think this has more to do with the global economy than it does with moe.
at first moe was just for the girls, i dont know when mens started to like it too, and i dont hate moe(when is sustaines with a decent story) but i miss the 90's styles of characters, but well i supposed moe turned japanesse men gay, that would explain their hype for traps and the such.
You seem to overestimate how many grown men watch anime.
"at first moe was just for the girls"
lol'd.
This is depressing, and I don't mean only the number reduction of new titles but also the quality behind it. Churning out same old crap.
Only bothering to look into Okami Kakushi because its an adaption of a game directed by Ryukishi07. Other then that everything looks blah.
Also still waiting for Kaiji season 2 ffs.
+1 for Ookami Kakushi.
There's no source for this, and the list isn't final, but makes sense they will do less. Might be nothing new to see here--they still sound same old in the in the summaries. Dance Vampire, Hidamari, Nodame, Chu-Bra! maybe... It's gonna be catch up time this winter.
In a way this is good. The industry needs some year of low tide to get the quality to where it once was.
What!? Seriously, take off the nostalgia googles, they do nothing after all. Theyre always produces crappy anime togheter with the good ones.
Gundam Unicorn is a Six-Part OVA though... And not due until Feb/Mar. Even then it will probably follow a release pattern similar to Macross Zero/08th MS Team.
Anyway, looking forward to Durarara!! (same guy wrote the Baccano novels).
A new Cobra ODA? THE FUCK?!! I didn't hear anything.
You might want to revise that OP image there, Artefact.
Looking forward to Okami Kakushi, time to see how Ryukishi07 goodness is handled by someone other than Studio DEEN
Couldn't the japanese government do one of those bailout things like the US did for their banks?
A few billion yen here and there should get the studios back on their feet.If only rozen maiden aso was still around...
Only one I'm looking forward to is Dance in the Vampire Bund, because the manga was interesting...and maybe Gundam UC. The rest looks like moe shit.
Moe shit that, moe shit this... what, is the latest trend in Paris talk about moe or what?
Kaitou Reinya looks nice
Well few series isn't a bad thing I would be happy with 5-10 awesome shows every season instead of 2 or 3 great series and 20-30 its good but nothing special like has been for a while
Finally, the damned market needs downsizing to cut out the shit. There might not be much improvement now, but any change is good change.
I hope this means quality over quantity
I feel bad for animators though
At the very least, I'll have my Nodame.
What about Strike Witches 2? What the hell happened to that? It was supposed to be out this fall now it's almost winter (or is, I never pay attention to the actual days that the change).
anime industry has a history of over 50 years
I do not think this will end
maybe the anime again be like the 90`s
We need to call Gainax again?
bleh.
rather have quality over quantity. and so far the series that they propose don't draw in my attention.. have to wait tho, but still, not looking forward to it.
I guess the upcoming winter season is the perfect time to catch up on some anime that people might have skipped due to time and whatsoever.
As long as it means less shitty series and more at-least-decent ones, I'm all for it.
You wish. Im afraid that means less niche stuff, more maistream stuff... gah...
What no one is excited for hanamaru youchien. Oh well at least i am.
Mm...
"Dance in the Vampire Bund" for "Loli Vampire" and "Omamori Himari" for "Catgirl" and "Loli Sea Monster"...
Merry Christmas for Me!!!
Katanagatari and the new hidamari sketch are what I'm looking forward to. They'll both be <3
Thank god. I couldn't handle another 19 shows to watch from one season.
Good, at least half of those are moeblob.
MORE HIDAMARI SKETCH!!! My nutbladder only just got over x365!!!
They call these things a "boom" for a reason. Eventually it's gotta come crashing down sometime.
yuno is mai waifu
Its obviously not the same Chowder. Shows like that and Flapjack are whats fueling a lot of stupidity in this country. I completely fail to understand how that could get so popular. But when I take into consideration the i.q. of the average american television viewer... its no surprise.
Oh sure, get rid of all the best selling moeblob titles and replace them all with "good" shows despite not knowing how well whether they'll actually sell or be received. Oh sure, they'll be able to start churning out Miazaki-quality titles with no problem if they just get rid of their only source of revenue and appeased a group of people they never intended to cater to.
It's quite striking how anti-fanboys can often surpass regular fanboys in terms of stupidity. It never ceases to amaze me how idiots love to blame moe as source of the anime market's problems, despite it being the largest source of cash flow in the market?
Newsflash: "Quality" does not always mean sales. If people find a title to be fun to watch despite it being of "low quality" to the artsy types, they will still buy it and contribute to the market. If a title is very deep and complicated but not as fun to watch for their intended audiences (or the audience isn't large enough), it's not going to sell shit no matter how much you want it otherwise.
Has anyone actually paid any attention to what's been going on in the economy lately, or have people had their heads shoved so far up their asses that their brains had been digested by their own stomach acids?
Churning out the same moeblob titles wasn't helping the business either.
Supply and demand. Until the audience stops demanding for moe, the studios will keep churning them out.
it depends on how many are there demanding for moe.
Come on, they're buying Endless Eight for God's sake! It's clearly NOT a problem that has to do with moe not being in demand. Just take a look at the horde of idiots that buy the DVDs. If anything, this goes to show that not only will people buy (good) moe, they will buy shitty, worthless moe, too.
In this time and age, it seems you can't go wrong with moe, so the reason lies elsewhere.
Moe is the result of the problems of the anime industry, and has now become a problem in itself. No one is going to be crying when extremely generic non quality-checked ecchi shows starts disappearing from our screens. Except maybe the stupid 13 year olds, but they wouldn't know what a good show was anyway.
Bleh, the stupids 13 years olds has they rights! STUPIDS 13 YEARS OLD OF THE WORLD, UNITE!!!!! For a world of generic non quality checked ecchi shows!!!!
If you really know what the hell a "good show" is, why don't you stop shoving it down people's throats and actually support the titles you consider to be good?
Supply and demand, dumbass.
This is not about a "DEATH TO MOE" crusade. This is about making better, more entertaining anime across ALL genres, to broaden the industry's cash flow, whether or not the show's genre is moe or not.
Anime studios, full of not artists, but comp sci nerds with no good ideas, have all but decided to create products that fall back on the least common denominator that sells easiest: sex appeal and moe. This has caused anime's viewer base to be tragically and ridiculously narrow -- otakus.
Nowadays, anime is a niche; quite frankly, it's not a socially acceptable thing to like anymore. No surprise then, that the industry is suffering as a result of its own lack of creativity and stupid decisions. People are entertaining themselves with other things, like movies and video games, because there's nothing else but moe, which people may not necessarily like.
If the industry wants to recover and expand again, it's quite simple. Moe has every right to stay, but if they want to compete with the other mediums, they have to look outside of the moe box, and not just make better shows, but shows that appeal to greater audiences.
+ 1 for truth.
The decrease sucks. But I see some good titles coming out for the winter. Hidamari sketch, unicorn gundam, dance in the vampire bund. Some other promising looking shows.
Fuck yes. Less shows, MOAR quality. Omamori and Dance in the Vampire Bund has me sold.
Well look at it all, almost all of it is dumb moe/perverted shit.
YES FINALLY Hanamaru Youchien!
ITS TIME FOR UBER LOLICON PRIDE.
Yeah, this definitely isn't finalized... but eh.
I notice not many of the bigger studios have shows on this list...
Gundam Unicorn, Durara! and Dance in The Vampire Bund is there. I'm still gonna enjoy the winter anime despite the lower number of titles.
Ohh.. Seikon no Qwaser... I wonder how fucked up the TV release will be.. :S
On a side note...
Nodame!!!! Damn and there's also an upcomming Live Action Movie. Can't wait!!!!
oh lol.
They said in Seitokai that they're making an anime for BakaTest. Nice it see it actually going through.
Less moe? Finally. Maybe they will start with some real shows after 10 years.
Geez. You sounds like a old man preaching while seated in the park feeding the ducks. In my times the anime was all good and shiny, with intelligent plot, magistrality executed twist, elaborated characters, photorealistic quality and.. and... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....
Donwrated comment? Yes, the truth hurts.
As always, the 'moe-factor' gets the blame. Nice to know that people still like looking for scapegoats in all the wrong places.
If the current market trend is anything to go by, moe is what's keeping the industry ALIVE right now. While there are other types of shows that are also successful (Bakemonogatari for example), moe is, last I checked, the largest dominating factor, the biggest seller and thus the biggest contributor to the anime industry's wealth.
True, a bit more variety would be appreciated, but to pinpoint it to one 'problem' (especially one that's highly debatable in terms of it actually being a problem) is pure guesswork.
Take note that the world is still in an economic crisis and Japan has also caught onto it. A better idea is to wait and see if this trend continues after the current recession is over. THEN you can start pointing fingers (hopefully in the right places then).
Bakemonogatari is a moe show.^^U
As long as there are 2 decent shows, it'll be like any other season for me. Hopefully things will pick up for the Spring/Summer seasons.
LOL! THE MOE-POOL HAS ALL BEEN USED UP.... SOMEONE NEEDS TO MAKE A SUPER-ORIGINAL STORY TO ATTRACT NEW ATTENTION.
EXAMPLE:
-A STORY OF A GIRL WHO FOUND HERSELF IN THIRD-PERSON, LIKE IN A VIDEO GAME?
-OR ITS APOCALYPTIC EARTH AND A GIRL IN A GIANT CANISTER SLEEPS UNTIL ALIEN-HUMANS FOUND HER
YOU KNOW? SOMETHING THAT PROVOKES THOUGHT...
^ If these are examples of a super-original interesting story, I'd keep my moe anime and their decline, thanks.
Though provoking... LULZ
There's Baka to Test, good enough
Anyone remember what TV anime was like before 1996, the year of Evangelion? It was pretty limited, let me tell you- most anime was OAVs and movies. Evangelion started the boom, with classics like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Utena, Escaflowne and Love Hina following in its wake. This boom has continued for over a decade, but now I think it's simply run out. And yes, I blame the endless torrent of crappy, unambitious, plotless moe/fanservice crap.
Someone needs to make totally unoriginal and derivative anime in which scantily dressed schoolgirls run around flashing their boobs and panties, are hot for each other, and want to have sex with their brothers.
Did you miss the past year of anime?
The sun has finally set on the moe empire...
Omamori Himari yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssss!!!!!! (>_<)
unicorn and dance in the vampire bund is the only series i'm looking forward to
Hopefully the amount of crap animes have been reduced and all that remains are the good ones. Good anime like Chowder...?
You know what, an anime version of Chowder would be hilarious, like Super Milk Chan.
Lack of ZnT 4 disturbs me
Go read ZnT light novels, they're far more interesting than anime. ZnT TVs have been going downhill from average 1st season to crappy last one, and if this trend continues, 4th season better not happen.
How easily we forget there is a world wide economic recession crisis.
This is a very yellow headline by the way.
Chowder lol reminds me from cartoon network
Can't wait for Seikon no Qwaser and Dance in the Vampire Bund.
Gundam unicorn? I thought the release was set to be in spring not winter
"Gundam UC" isn't a series, Artefact, it's a continuity. Furthermore, Gundam Unicorn isn't a series either.
Look on the sunny side.
Maybe they will start concentrating their resources on a few good shows, Instead on just shelling out a lot of mediocre shows, then marketing the hell out of the few that manage to actually sell moderately well.
Thank God. Maybe now we'll get some quality over quantity out of Japan.
new interesting animes!!! one of the best moments of the year!!!
I want to see the vampire one. I have enough of that twilight crap.
For now I plan to see (the list may increase as the season): Okami Kakushi (Ryukishi07-sama!!! *-*), Baka to Test to Shōkanjū (Popular ligh novel), Dance in the Vampire Bund (It looks to be awesome), Ladies versus Buttlers! (Fanservice is always good), Sora no Woto (KyoAni-fagism lol)...
For the rest I will see 3 or 4 episodes and make my conclusions.
WOOHOO! NODAME!
Well it doesnt seem like anime is going away. Prolly aint good for the American market though. Then again it's never really taken off over here.
That's odd, that's not what I'm hearing. I'm not hearing "I want a more diverse catalog of shows" or "I want some deeper shows" from the other users, I'm hearing things along the lines of "I want moe/fanservice shit gone". See the difference?
All I hear is you guys equating moe or fanservice to a lack of quality and continuously rant as if though their very existence is the reason why the anime market is in the state it is right now. The might help to broaden their audiences, but that's not what what the anti-moe/fanservice users are wanting, based on what they're saying. All I see is a bunch of idiots trying to look for a scapegoat.
Why do Hanamaru Youchien seem to be a parody spinoff of World Embryo?
The characters are very similar.
It was to be expected. The big players in the industry in Japan said they'd be doing so anyway (the world economy helped somewhat). Less moe/ecchi series is good for the industry since the market is flooded with it. *insert Chappelle pussy jk here*
That being said, I'll be looking forward to Dance in the Vampire Bund, Gundam UC and Seikon no Qwaser.
This season's going to be just fine, don't freak out. Vampire Bund, Unicorn, Nutbladder Sketch, Durara, Nodame Cantabile all will almost undoubtedly turn out to be perfectly watchable. At least, if you're not some ignorant faggot.
That's not even taking into account series that were totally under the radar that wind up being sleeper hits, of which there is usually at least one per season.
Also keep in mind that Gainax is doing Hanamaru Kindergarten. They'll make it entertaining, trust me.
Well, the economy is shit now, so it's expected anyway
I fap at Omamori Himari
You do know the lack of anime this season is due to the Olympics right? I mean its better to run less during a big event then have shows preempted as Canada kicks everyone's ass up and down the ice rink. Remember the fiasco 2008 summer games was?
What about unconfirmed shows? IIRC, Shakugan no Shana season 3 should air in the Winter 2010 season as well.
There's Gundam UC. Fuck the rest.
It looks like fansub groups will b put on the competitive mark with so many fansub groups after 16 series, this winter will be epic.
Fuck yes, Hidamari
Hmmm, the abundance of moe-loli/slice-of-life anime I see....seriously this shit is getting old.
Anime sucks right now.
Cobra is the proff things will now get better, it was that kind of animes that started the cult that later lead to the anime fandom everywhere.
