The reason is pretty simple.
Imagine you have a school dance - a fairly old fashioned stereotypical one, with all the guys on one side and all the girls on the other.
The first guys who are confident enough to overcome their shyness and walk across the room ask the 9s and 10s to dance. The next wave of guys go for the 7s and 8s, and so on.
You have a fairly shy guy deciding who he'll ask to dance. He sees a fairly average girl standing off to the side and decides to ask her to dance since she's been left out until now.
When he asks her, she turns him down. Why?
From her point of view, she gets more angry and dejected the more girls that get chosen before her. When shy guy comes by to ask her to dance, she thinks "He must be worthless if he's coming by to ask -me-" and she turns him down. By turning down guys, she gets an ego boost. It's enough to make her feel better about the 9s and 10s. If she manages to turn down 5 guys, then she's managed to "one up" the other girls completely (from her POV).
If you expand this concept outside of a highschool dance, you'll understand the actions of average looking girls. I've seen some of the harshest rejections come from them rather then then 'pretty girls'.
Keep in mind that a 5 thinks you must be some kind of scum to bother asking her out. If that's how she thinks, then it stands to reason that she'd reject you without mercy.
Some women become more mature and grow out of this kind of habit but... not many.
Honestly 9s and 10s are probably the better for friend material, since they're usually pretty cool around guys. 6-8s are best for dating. 5s and less are like a mine field - proceed with caution.

To make it far in a society a woman must look a certain way, men must own a certain thing; to be the biggest geek I have to have a good computer, you just have to be mildly cute, but not enough to scare off the shy geeks, it's that simple, if we take however high society you must wear make-up and look slutty in a way you can pretend is 'ellegant', while I just need a woman who fits that bill, a large house, a wardrobe of designer suits, a sports car and a golf club membership; society expects certain things, you just have to have it to fit in; you can easily find a different area of society to join, just because you don't get into the high society doesn't mean you can't live.

Yeah, I would be willing too, I haven't met anyone with anything too adnormal, a large birth-mark is the best I've done, and we obviously didn't marry, but it was one of the best relationships I've ever had. I'll admit the girl I'm with now is very attractive, but that's simply because it's easier to get an attractive girl when you're attractive yourself, however it is a whole lot harder to find a girl with a good personality, and I basically found her through chasing stories of attractive friends of friends' bad relationship experiences (since most people don't look for personality, and in fact dislike it in a woman), she's flawed in other ways though, her memory problems make people assume she's an idiot (she's actually extremely intelligent, though I'll admit she doesn't apply herself well) and also make her seem sociably inept, making her unpresentable in that way instead; I obviously note this, if I didn't I'd lying to myself about the relationship, but I'm pretty sure I love her and am thinking of asking her to move in with me, and I probably would have done the same with Paulina in time had she not have me trailed in assumptions that I was cheating on her (here's the thing about not being shallow, it doesn't work out) which rather damaged the trust aspect of our relationship.

Neither of the "before" pictures here is remotely unattractive, and many of the women pictured in the gallery linked at the bottom of the article are unattractive in both pictures but are using camera angles and photo manipulation to hide it (like raising the contrast to the point where their face appears to just be a sheet of white and you can't make out their ugly noses).
1st picture: Attractive yankee -> Attractive respectable looking young woman. Perfectly okay, she'd grab your attention, but could look good enough for your parents to approve aswell; the point of make-up is to change your appearance to better suite a certain situation, and this is great proof of such.
2nd picture: Plain country girl -> Plain city girl. Still not great looking, but better suiting for a city girl social occasion; sure I'm not a fan of the ghost white face look, but this is clearly meant for other girls not for catching guys.
I see no problem with these pictures. The gallery linked is also mostly camera and lighting tricks. Another thing, clothing choice, hair style, and facial expression make more of a difference than make-up, make-up is just another thing on-top, and I'd say similar to facial hair for men; if you're going for a certain look you'll choose if you want stubble or clean shaven, or maybe even a little goatee, for women the make-up choice is basically the exact same thing. Make-up of a certain type, or a certain type of beard, can make someone look better only if it happens to suit them, it's not a change of their looks, only an enhancement, are we to say women shouldn't trust men with beards? I know they don't but that's for a very different reason I'm sure.

Go meet women in the real world, then you might see, there are all sorts of different women. I'm not sure if to advise going to a Ballet lesson, I do it and know there are all types of girls in my troupe, but I also am bound by the stigma which by all my experiences isn't true... the "before" pic shows her with dyed hair and makeup to highlight her eyes more.
the "after" pic shows her blonde dyed hair changed to a more darker tone - reflecting nearly natural japanese hair which is black.
her hair also was somewhat curled in the "before" pic while in the "after" pic her hair was allowed to just hang out normally. and she was given a very small haircut for the bangs. her makeup was also removed hence giving you those actual pretty eyes that were hidden before because of eyeliners.
"before" pic she doesn't smile but gives a sheepish mouth pose. in her "after" pic she smiles a bit highlighting her nice cheeks which is already there ever since she went for the gyaru look.
all in all this girl was probably a girl with low self-esteem trying despearately to fit in when she was actually pretty in the first place and not realizing it.
