k-on-vs-lucky-star-haruhi-sora-no-woto.jpg

Previously it was noted that with the success of moe blob anime K-ON! even titles such as Haruhi were losing their characteristic style in favour of something approximating the evident marketability of Mio and company, but this trend seems to be intensifying, with the above comparison demonstrating the creeping K-ONification of two other titles…

Improvement or degradation?

Moe has nothing to do with the poor argument in new anime, they can have that moe style and good stories but they don't.
Moe is not bad at all, but seeing ONLY moe recently is what I don't like.

Moe isn't all bad. As all you said, forced moe is the problem.

Before, everyone used to say that anime was great because there was a show or genre for just about everyone. But now, the demographic for newer shows has narrowed. What we really need is a balance in production of moe and more mainstream anime. Which is isn't happening right now, since the moe otaku craze is what is driving the anime market.

Lucky Star is alright with it. As for the other two, it's definitely degradation, because the original art style fit the anime more closely. Haruhi is meant to be god, not a blob of moe. As for the other one, I can't say, but from the looks of it, a lot was lost in the translation, especially her hair. Definitely degradation in my eyes.

So what the hell, we might as well inject moe into our hentai, too. Moe will have truly penetrated/been penetrated everywhere. >_>

Oh fuck, might as well make our cars more moe. Eventually, everyone's gonna be driving Beetles with fucking glistening anime eye headlights. *slitslit*

I don't know what the bottom anime is, but Lucky Star and Haruhi are both Kyoani shows, so it only makes sense that their own drawing style would evolve over time. So I'm not sure how or why this is news worthy.

    00:29 23/11/2009 # ! Neutral (+0.2)

Agreed. This seems like anti K-On hysteria to me. The bottom image compares a manga image to anime, so of course the are not going to look the same. Look how different the Sailor Moon anime looks compared with its original manga.

    Comment by MARl0
    00:33 23/11/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Indeed. K-On itself was an evolution of Haruhi's drawing style. It's just a normal style evolution of a studio. Completely typical and normal stuff for the industry. You could make the same claims about any number of studios. Just look at Gainax's stuff. All their shows share a similar look as well, and that look has evolved over the years in the same way.

It's not evolution. It's called budget cutting animation regression. Similar to Shaft, which was at first artsy, but now seem to be cutting corners at the most inappropriate places. In kyoani's case, they're now just abusing popularity and churning out crap in favor of getting more money. Haruhi might have been like that because Clannad didn't do as well as they hoped (not that I'd know), but for a studio have been praised as animation gods, I find it disappointing.

    Comment by MARl0
    03:14 23/11/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Completely disagree. It's simply a gradual change in art direction that all artists and studios go through. It's nothing more than that. You're just trying to find "conspiracy" where there isn't any.

    Comment by Kortaku
    03:28 23/11/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Agree with mario about K-on's gradual development of anime style which is a fact for all studios of any art. There is gradual change and development. But its also clear to see that the K-on style is being transferred over to other shows for easier reanimation. A money saving method perhaps.

It's the size and proportions of the eyes and face. Lucky Star had larger eyes and smaller faces, while K-ON has smaller eyes and larger faces. You can "K-ONify" practically any Lucky Star image.

OP image reverted to Lucky Star style:

I would agree with the first statement, but not the second. The females in Munto actually look their age(somewhat, minus Suzume), and the angles of the body seem more prominent in their designs.

I think the biggest similarity between the two styles would be the eyes and choice of colors, but I don't see much else the two shows may have in common. Granted, there is the cuteness factor, but this is KyoAni we're talking about. (When I say this, I mean the new material of Munto, not the OVA recap.)

If this is indeed copying off of K-ON, though, KyoAni and other studios may use(or attempt to use)it until it starts losing them money. It all seems like a big marketing ploy to me.

I have this theory that the original animation staff who did Haruhi S1 were not big players in the new series's production. I think they were set, instead, to work on the movie while the K-on staff were given the work on the continuation of the TV series. Therefore, I'm hoping that the movie will have visuals and animation that are on par or superior to the original.

Hey I LIKED K-On. Broke my heart when I saw that this was worth 100 bucks.
I mean I like the anime, would love to have the mini, but 100 bucks would require one of my friends to do an intervention if they really cared about me :)
I don't mind moe in the same way I like the same chocolate bar over at over. Yeah they are sweet, very sweet, but then I also like to sip pure maple syrup right out of the bottle. I guess I am just immune to too much sweet :)
I'd even love to see Sailormoon redone as a moe blob :)

well kyo-ani had a degradation before characters in FMP!:fumoffu were wonderful then they started, with the key style , wich look ok in air good in kanon and great in clannad, but still consider FMP:second raid the best style, and like someone said before, is not k-on! style, that started in sora o miageru shoujo wich is probably the great fail of kyoani, and about haruhi, its probably just to save money they kept that style, but they knew and otakus proved that haruhi would sell even if the second season was animated by gonzo.

I'll say degradation. Like many people said, it loses its originality and "flavor". The term "blob" does somehow affect a lot. I mean... look at Haruhi's weirdly shaped face and (fore)head in post-moeblob picture.

I think I don't even need to talk about the third row...

One day you moe lovers may wake up and realise how shallow, boring and crap moe anime is.

I used to be a victim or its charms then I woke up and destroyed anything moe related in my possession. You're just buying into the fan service, the eye candy, nothing more.

For the love of god wake up out of your moe comas, can't you see how this shallow, bland shit is killing anime.

Anime needs to go back to being gritty, violent, cool, like it was in 80s and 90s, I hate anime now with a passion.

You talk like if many of us didn't already know the shallow crap it is when in fact we are well aware of it.
It is you who needs to wake up and realize that some people simply enjoy that kind of things for what they are and that the existence of things you don't like shouldn't make you enjoy the ones you do less.

In some cases improvement where the style could use some more moe but in many other situations its a degradation simply because the title was designed with a certain style in mind and changing the formula has caused degradation.

With Haruhi its hard to focus on what's going on with my mind being distracted with all the moe and normally I wouldn't mind that but I actually want to see something interesting happen and I cant if I am going all stupid over the cute shit.
That never bothered me with K ON! because going retarded and silly over all the silly cute things was the whole point.

In a way moe is like weed, it makes some things better but it can also you can miss many good things.

I think this is my only irritation with this art style. Haruhi's character just seems to match the old art better. Mikuru doesn't look too bad, but then again she's also really cute and quiet. Haruhi's just so loud and dominate, the sharper and less rounded design just seems to fit better.
