The latest DLC episode for Grand Theft Auto IV features a typically biting satire of the less than healthy state of the current anime market in the form of Princess Robot Bubblegum, astutely lampooning just about every genre and even the woeful dubbing so beloved of US anime fans…

You can see the fittingly oppai laden and tentacle laced video below:

Few could fault its grasp of the current state of anime.

The DLC itself, Episodes From Liberty City – The Ballad of Gay Tony, is bought and paid for by Microsoft, so anyone without the Xbox 360 version can just forget about owning it.

there poking fun of how the media veiws anime ,they think its nothing but smut and dirty things.
while the media hates video games as well and the the games there are adds for games that are violent which are advertised for kids.

there poking fun at mainstream media as well as stereotypes. plus its kinda like what midway did with mortal kombat.

The accurate portrayal that is bullshit? Lol. If Rockstar think they are clever for doing this they can think again because if these stereotypes aren't already obvious to you, you fail regardless. It's like poking fun Loony Toons for being random and funny... Or star wars for being a science fiction movie. Somewhat of a captain obvious effect? To me at least.

    Fire Tripper OVA (1985)
    Ranma 1/2 (1989-2002)
    Urusei Yatsura (Lum) (1981-1986)
and probably in her other works too.

    Bubblegum Crisis OVA (1987-1991)

    Tenchi Muyo! series (1992,1995 & 1997)

    Just to name a few.
There's more out there from the 80's and 90's than you might think. I agree though, it's not like today where any female in almost ALL Anime no matter how young or old shows nipples. Sometimes that's not a good thing! ^_^'

It's true that not all of it has that style, but there are patterns and trendy styles that are used more than othersevery generation. It's just the way the industry evolves over time. I can guess an anime's release date within a couple of years just by seeing the art because of it, and I'm pretty artistically challenged so I guarantee someone with more talent for this sort of thing can point out things in better detail.

    Comment by Kortaku
    05:43 29/10/2009 # ! Good (+0.6)

True words indeed. All things go in trends and the current scaling trend happens to be moe type anime. So? There are plenty of non moe anime, which I wont need to name, starting from 2000 and onward. Art, such as paintings and painting style went through phases as well.
80s, 90s were heavily focused on mecha anime yet has it stayed that way? No. Things change as the times change and moe is the 'in' thing. So if you dont like it, sit it out, or ride the wave if you do.

Sure, there are a lot of moe moe anime these days and its much more commonly publicized. Most people look to anime for its entertainment purposes, thus moe and slice of life sells the most, generating profits. Companies go where there are profits. Easy connection. But its not only moe anime, and never has been nor will probably never will be. There are action/philosophic/horror/romance etc. etc. genres of anime out there, but the more complicated they get, the smaller the audience target.

Simply view animation industry as a pyriamid in mind, with moe on the bottom with its largest variety and more complicated philosophic/political anime at the top, such as Ghost in the Shell (of which type, there are few).

People can bitch and always will, but to state that the industry is now totally moe, is a overgeneralization but one that you could obviously debate to be true or false. I would argue false as I have stated before.

There are anime with good storylines now. There were random fanservice anime then. (Whenever "then" was.)

People just put on their nostalgia goggles, especially when a batch of younger fans comes along and is interested in newer, slightly different shows.

Plenty of the anime that are now elevated to the level of classics, that bemoaning fans speak of in terms of longing for the day, still drip with fanservice. In fact, accounting for "inflation" of the subgenre, many of them would have been counted as fanservice series... they just came before blatant fanservice anime became its own sort of sub-genre.

Similarly, many modern series that are brushed off as "moeblob fanservice" actually have greater depth to the characters and more emotional development among them than many of the said classics. Basically, things just happen in slightly different ways.

Teal dear version: New anime, same as the old anime.

And the stories and "stereotypes" mostly came from this older form of "manga."

As for this spoof, as long as people take it as a horrible western parody, I suppose it's fine.
    But does anyone else agree that most of these stereotype situations are more likely to be found in American action cartoons? >.>;

R* hardly focuses on over-sexualizing characters in their games. Sure you've got porn stars and whores, but that's the nature of the game. A whore who looks like a whore isn't sexual exploitation so much as it is an accurate depiction of who the character is. Trying to make a normal and appealing character who just happens to spend almost all her time with no clothes on and ridiculous proportioned tits for absolutely no reason at all other than to score ratings with a male demographic, however, very much is. Maybe you should learn what "context" is.

So you're saying if it has fanservice then it's crap huh? Hell, if it has interesting characters, good storyline, nice animation, good looking characters and added fanservice; i'll say that's a Perfect Package. That's why i prefer Blood+ and Darker Than Black over some anime that's trying hard to make them look "mature" in a serious way.

I didn't missed those. I think you are the one who can't differentiate between boring scenes of people not doing much versus language puns, humour, charming fanservice, interesting animation, pop culture references, etc.

You fail at critical analysis. Moe is a form of fanservice, not fanservice=moe. Fanservice can be done well, which Bakemonogatari does.

p.s. I agree DTB and Blood+ are awesome as well. Fanservice can add value if done in a none gratuitous way. But an anime shouldn't have fanservice as its only selling point, which is pretty much the only selling point for moe crap.

Anyone who truly believes this and isn't joking, I don't think I can respect all that well.
Just because all you hear about on the internet or in America (etc.) might be this, it doesn't exactly mean it is.

In fact, moe anime and fanservice anime are only a sliver of the profits of anime/manga (big enough to make an impact, but far from monopolizing the industry).
If this is supposed to be an anime spoof, they've covered just about 5%-15% of the anime out there. No exaggeration, believe it or not.

    Comment by Anonymous
    01:57 29/10/2009 # ! Neutral (+0.4)

Then give actual examples so we might believe what you say. Throwing percentages randomly ain't gonna help you to make a point.

Yes, this video is very stereotypical and takes all the bad merchandising and bad anime tropes in order to mock the anime industry but, if people laugh about that it's because they find some insightful attacks in it.
Look at the Fall season anime. A lot of them contain a lot of fanservice and almost no interesting plot. And if there's one, you have to wait 3 to 5 episodes to get something at least interesting and senseful. "A certain scientific railgun" → 2 episodes of Yuri fanservice, 1 episode with a plot ruined in terms of seriousness (Oh god, tazer in the eye... no wait... wtf !?) and 1 episode with Touma-rediscovery. The only two "hints" are "Database lies" and "The scientific woman". "The Sacred Blacksmith", Fanservice, Stupid woman is stupid, fanservice, Sluggish plot evolution. The only character with non-idiotic personality seems to be "the savior" (which is quite cliché).
Almost all others are everlasting overrated romance anime. There's exceptions like "Darker than Black ~Comet of Gemini~" but they are a few.
Even Seitokai no Ichizon satirical jokes becomes quite repetitive and bland after a few episodes.

So, IMHO, yes, saying that every anime will become like this GTA video because of some mystical merchandising power hypnotizing the anime producers crowd is clearly, at best, an uneducated opinion. But it also seems like there's a clear intent to produce a lot and lot of anime about big (and stupid) boob girls with overused clichés and tiresome scenarios, like this video satire, since it's fast, cheap and quite easy.

Laughing about a parody doesn't require anything particularly insightful. People laugh at movies in the vein of "Meet the Spartans", and those aren't insightful parodies. They're not funny on their own, either. They're also not good. In fact I'm pretty sure that they're a human rights violation with how bad they are. But someone out there is chuckling at them because they keep getting made.

The thing about this parody is that it really isn't very insightful at all. It's a parody that's based mostly on other parodies, which based themselves on other parodies, and somewhere someone may have actually watched a couple of episodes. Just like the Dragonball Z parodies that go on and on about powering up for three months and growing hair of skyscraper proportions... a lot of the people doing the parodies probably haven't seen more than part of an episode, they're just repeating someone else's parody where they powered up for two months and grew hair of radio tower proportions.

I mean, this thing basically just seems to be "Perfect Hair Forever" with somewhat better animation. It wasn't insightful then, and it's not insightful now.

As William Shatner said, "You people have been making jokes at my expense all night long, and frankly, I'm insulted... at how bad you are at it."

I didn't deny that it had an impact on the industry, nor did I deny that it sold well.
The big moe series do sell extremely well (K-ON!, Bakemonogatari, and Haruhi are swell examples of top anime series in the genre).
In fact, I'm not really talking about series with moe character designs, but rather, fan-service based series made to exploit images of the female body using insignificant plots plots.
The percentages up there were, indeed, just an estimate based on my own knowledge, so here are the thoughts behind my estimate.

Of the 65 anime scheduled this fall, only [around] 15 were fan-service based.
In the summer, of the 45, only [about] 10 were fan-service based.
And in the spring, [about] 12/63.
The majority of these series not being watched by Japanese audiences.
And of course, you cannot take children series, popular shounen series, popular shoujo series, some of the older-women romance anime, and plenty of re-runs of older classics on television.
Practically none of these are fan-service based.

In short, I was simply pointing out that one should not take one small side of the picture and assume it represents the whole or will represent the whole.
Anime is huge, so of course, each part of it has a huge fan-base somewhere.
But considering the difference in opinions and preferences between different groups of people, if one hangs out on moe-themed news sites (Sankakucomplex) and hears mostly that part of the story, it is likely that such a person will assume all otaku are similar to them and what they know is the gist of anime.

It's not stupidity that I'm accusing anyone of (because most people here can think for themselves, right?).
I'm just saying that you should open your mind to other things. >.>
I did say that it's fine as a joke...
    Just please don't actually believe that other anime will become overwhelmed by these kinds of series. ^^;

Spot on. Animke has been terrible over the past few years. Remember when anime spit out a few epic series a year, and at worst dropped a sprinkle of fan service: Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Last Exile, Ghost in the Shell: SAC, Azumanga Daioh (funny as hell), Higurashi (When they cry). Now it's all rampant fan service, and the plots are only devices to manufacture harems and compromising situations. Japanese men has really fallen too deep into depravity. They need to get their act together.

    Comment by RannXXV
    01:51 29/10/2009 # ! Good (+0.6)

In Cowboy Bebop, Faye ran around in a tiny top and short-shorts and spent a lot of time tied up.

Outlaw Star had a catgirl wearing bikini bottoms, a female assassin with the upper half of her boobs bared, and Melfina spent at least half the series naked and floating in a tank. Not to mention the various strippers/prostitutes/whatever in the first episode alone.

SAC. The Major's DAT ASS. That's enough, even if they didn't have her walking around in less than Wonder Woman wears most of the time, or if episodes weren't delving into the sexual peccadilloes of the future or having the Major proposition young boys.

If Azumanga Daioh came out today, people would be grumbling about it being "another moeblob series". It's cute, it's funny, it's got blushy girls and cute girls and silly girls and it's not about anything in particular other than the girls' day-to-day lives. In general concept and execution it's largely indistinguishable from K-On!, save that the girls of K-On! actually have a more consistent storyline and motivation.

So basically, y'know, you're full of it.

You're joking right because it has to be a troll if you're are saying GiTS or Cowboy Bebop or Outlaw Star is even close to that parody. Faye wore more clothes than most girls in my highschool as did the Major. You are just nit picking and I like how you said prostitutes and strippers because those are in GTA. This parody is a parody as in not taken seriously because it's actually inaccurate of any anime worth watching. The problem is non-fans perceive anime as this and don't have any respect for anime. You can watch american action films that are more ridiculous than that parody with tits ass and explosions and people say it's good. But do the same with an anime and it's "perveted funny chinese cartoons" unworthy of any respect. Then there's all the ignored thought provoking anime.... But if people don't like something they will of course grasp at straws and latch on to stereotypes.

And, I know a bunch of haters are going to bash me for this one, but Naruto is still running, and yes, I think it is a great show. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei was kinda disappointing...unfortunately. I'd like to say though, that I actually like many of the fan service and moe shows, atleast all the Yuri ones. ^^ And I loved Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yuutsu. anime today reflects how pathetic japanese men have become

    worshipping stupid looking moe schoolgirls

japanese men are disgrace, I hold them responsible for the shitty state of the anime industry today.

If they grew a pair of balls than shit like k-on would never be popular, and rightly so. All fanservice, no substance.

The funny thing is from the very beginning I thought it was a 80's anime parody. My favorite anime have fanservice but not even close to that much. For example one of my favs. Chaos;HEAD's (which also had hot girls with swords) most gratuitous fanservice was weak compared to that (not to mention illusionary) My favorite anime Welcome To The N.H.K. had little fanservice and IMO a great story and a lot of character development. Other great anime with fanservice that don't devolve into retardation Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan. Sayounara Zetsubou Sensei, Elfen Lied, FLCL, Death Note, the list goes on and on all of the are from 2000 up btw

wtf isn't this 'hey lets make fun of anime' thing done to death? just throw in pink-hair girl with tits and ass, tenticles, and big guns and make it comedicly insane.,,, but since its in gta, everyone goes 'duhhherrr its funny'.
Why, are they craving more attention through making fun of anime genre because violence isn't working? 'Lets insult the anime fans just to get more attention... we haven't got enough attention and violence thing is old'. I liike gta but this somehow is a cheapshot.

not only did it feel like a jab at anime, but also at American marketing and dubbing, and even at American cartoons that are animated in a manga/anime style and passed off as "Americanime". i give Rockstar props for a parody well done.

If all the shows were moeblob or oversexualized shows then most of the currently airing shows would be. I checked with the anime series currently being released and there are 6 shows that fit this out of several dozen currently running anime. People just like to focus on the bad and ignore the good. The bad is the small percentage of shows that are considered moeblob or oversexualized which doesn't precede whether it has a good story or not. The good is the many shows that don't fit under the said catagories.

    06:19 29/10/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Well said. This is more a parody of a hentai anime than regular anime. Sadly most westerners are so ignorant that they think that all anime is about tentacle rape.

The anime I've watched recently is Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Kyou no Go no Ni, Shinigami no Ballad, Eden of The East, Ouran High School Host Club and Kannagi. I see very few similarities between these shows and Rockstar's parody. About the most similar series to the parody was Kannagi but even that is a considerable stretch.

To be fair, Rockstar probably intended this as a joke but unfortunately it has come off as being rather offensive to anime fans and the anime industry as a whole.

I hate it when anime sexualizes moe when you don't need to. In my opinion I think that's why some people look down on moe so much because it's being turned into some kind of worthless sex-sludge. Some people equate moe to something like this Princess Robot Bubblegum (to me it reminds me of really bad bargain-bin eroge).

How could this not have been made at any time since 1989?

It's also awfully blunt. "Why do I have to wear skimpy clothes? Anime has bad translation lol". The best joke was the deadpan "women dressed as schoolgirls" thing and the parody of loli via sexualizing the "baby" heroine.
